There is however no question of its pureness and genuineness as having been originally bound in this manner, and as such it may be considered a more desirable copy than in its more usually accepted state'. These two volumes have all the flaws called for by Smith except for three in volume 1 (at p.[107], p.174, and plate at p.329). Second series: the Contents leaf loosely inserted is the first state, with no list of illustrations, whilst that bound in is in the second state, with a list of illustrations on verso (omitting 'Mr Minns and His Cousin' at p.263). The 19-page catalogue at the end, dated December 1836, is as described by Smith. The binding by Remnant & Edmunds has the rarer blue and white patterned endpapers as opposed to the usual pale yellow ones.Provenance: Thomas Hatton, loosely inserted typed note, bookplates in first two volumes, William Henry Collis; and thence by descent to the present owners. ______________________LOTS 67-138: THE CHARLES DICKENS COLLECTION OF WILLIAM HENRY COLLIS OF LIVERPOOL (1865-1944)'W.H. Collis (aka Harry), was born in 1865 in Stourbridge, Worcs., the eldest of 8 brothers. His father William Blow Collis was a Mining Engineer and Coal Master (employing 200 men) and his grandfather of the same name, a renowned local solicitor and JP. 'Collis Street' is to be found near the centre of Stourbridge, and more recently 'The Collis Play Area' designated to their memory.WHC studied electrical sciences at Kings College in London, a subject at that time at the very frontiers of science and technology, and went on to work for the fledgling electricity company supplying electricity to Liverpool where he was also a lecturer at the university. As a life-long bachelor, he devoted himself to his role as the senior member of the family, but his two loves were his interest in his family genealogy, and his amazing interest in the life and works of Charles Dickens, on which he spent so much of his time.He amassed a large collection, and had wide correspondence with fellow Dickens aficionados for over 30 years of his life, becoming a recognised authority on the subject. Much of his correspondence has been kept. He was a meticulous adherer and recorder of detail as is evident in his notes relating to the books. Even with all his correspondence, he nearly always noted down on the letter the date of receipt of the letter as well as of his always prompt reply! In many cases he kept his edited drafts of these replies.' (Information provided by the family). The collection, sold on behalf of the descendants of Collis, provides a fascinating insight into the circle of 1930s Dickens collectors, dealers and bibliographers who, following in the footsteps of John F. Dexter, shared knowledge and collations, often buying and selling parts and spares to make up sets. WHC's most frequent correspondent was Thomas Hatton, who acknowledged Collis first and foremost in the bibliography he compiled with Arthur Cleaver ('The authors are indebted to many collectors and friends for information and assistance; particularly Mr. W.H. Collis, of Liverpool, and Dr. Hablot Browne, of Hoylake'). Many of the lots contain related letters from Hatton, some the draft replies, and the vast majority include WHC's detailed collation and provenance notes. They also reference the extraordinary amount of work done by the binder Morrell in repairing, cleaning and making up parts. Most of the books are still preserved in their 1930s brown paper parcels tied with string, and many of the individual parts and books are in a paper wrapper supplied by Collis with his edition notes. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 1456

[WORLD WAR I]: EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A fine autograph manuscript, unsigned, four pages, 4to and slightly smaller, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 1919). The boldly penned holograph manuscript, with a number of corrections, is the draft of a speech made by the Prince of Wales at a dinner in honour of Marshal Foch following the end of World War I and states, in part, 'This is an occasion of such unique & historical interest that I find it very difficult to address such a so distinguished an assembly. It is indeed a great honour for me to be presiding here this evening & that it should fall to my lot to propose such a wonderful toast; it is almost impossible for me to find adequate words……to welcome so many famous allied commanders…..At this dinner are gathered together, comrades in arms drawn from many nations…..who have been engaged in a long & desperate (sic) struggle against the most powerful military combination that the World has ever known & who have emerged from the struggle completely victorious……France & Paris have already celebrated peace & our overwhelming victory; the other allied nations & their capitals will doubtless do the same. But just now we are celebrating it all in the British & London way & I feel that yesterdays triumphal pageant was a brilliant success. We feel that it represented the great war, that it represented victory in every sense of the word & that no one who was present could fail to carry away but the proudest & most inspiring memories which will last a life time……To me as one of the younger generation these memories will be specia particularly vivid as during my periods of active service in several theatres of war I often had the priviledge (sic) & good fortune of being closely associated with many of our allied armies army corps divisions & even regiments…….It is obvious that this last greatest of world struggles has broken all records from every point of view but I would venture to point out that never before has so large a number of allies been fighting & working together…..Now that the great war is over & the powerful enemies that have so long disturbed the peace of the World & menaced our freedom are finally overthrown & subdued we all rejoice to welcome here those who have shared with us the perils & sufferings of the trying & strenuous campaign & who now share with us the joy of our victory. Representative of every allied power are present this evening but there is one power whose representative has occupied a unique position. In Marshall (sic) Foch we salute the great captain…..His position as a Supreme C. in C. has no comparison in history either from the point of view of power or responsibility. In this position he has revealed a genious (sic) for war equal to the greatness of his task & the magnitude of his difficulties'. Together with a further selection of holograph notes, unsigned, four pages, oblong 4to and 8vo, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 2019), being the Prince's briefer manuscript notes prepared in composing his speech, with various corrections and the different sections each marked with an ink and blue indelible pencil line, the notes concluding with a passage in French, 'C'est pour moi un tres grand honneur et tres grande joie de vous acceuillir ici au nom du Roi et de boire a la sante des grandes nations allies dont vous etes les representants distingues Je n'ai qu'une pensée ce soir “vive nos braves allies”' and his Toast to Foch, 'The Commanders & representatives of the armies forces of our allies coupled with the name of Marshall (sic) Foch'. A rare manuscript with interesting content. A few slight stains and minor age wear to the preparatory notes, the manuscript speech VG, 2  Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) French Marshal, a General and military theorist who served as the Supreme Allied Commander from March 1918.  The 'triumphal pageant' which the Prince of Wales describes as having taken place the day before in the present manuscript was undoubtedly the Victory Parade Peace Day held in London on 19th July 1919. Although fighting on the Western Front had ceased in November 1918, peace negotiations would continue for many months and the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until June 1919. When negotiations were reaching their conclusion and a 'proper peace' was within sight, a peace committee was founded to decide how Great Britain would publicly mark the end of World War I and acknowledge the widespread feelings of jubilation within the country.  With a Bank Holiday having been agreed upon, on the morning of the 19th July thousands of people gathered in London to participate in a spectacle, the likes of which had not been witnessed before. Almost 15,000 troops participated in the victory parade which was led by the Allied commanders Douglas Haig (British Commander-in-Chief), John Pershing (Head of the United States Expeditionary Force) and Ferdinand Foch (Allied Supreme Commander). The latter received the honour of being created a Field Marshal in the British Army on the same day and, on 20th July 1919, was the guest of honour at a dinner for the British and Allied Commanders and their staffs at the Carlton Hotel. It was at this dinner, attended by around 400 people, that the Prince delivered his speech. It was published in The Times on 21st July 1919. A monument to those killed and wounded, designed by Edwin Lutyens, was unveiled in Whitehall to mark the end of the victory parade. Although it was a temporary construction, another made from Portland stone and designed by Lutyens was to replace it in 1920 and, known as the Cenotaph, still stands today.

‘I will still go and get the vaccine…’ TOULOUSE-LAUTREC HENRI DE: (1864-1901) French Painter, Printmaker and Illustrator. Best remembered for his immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century, producing elegant and provocative images of the decadent affairs of those times. Rare A.L.S., `H´, three pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to his mother `My dear mum´, in French. Toulouse-Lautrec states in part `I have just spent two days at Grenier´s home, splashing.., under the mill´s tower, which does not lack charm. Add to this.. lunches followed by naps and boating and you will have a faint idea of the stupidity to which one arrives, of which Grenier is a perfect example ´. Toulouse-Lautrec further refers to pox and a portrait painting, saying `What you tell me about pox annoys me because I intended and still intend to travel and make the portrait of my cousin Juliette who I dare hoping that this year will accept to pose. I will still go and get the vaccine…I have no intention to go myself, unless I first come to look for you to go via Malromé. I would like to plan a stay of eight days..´ Paper with a Monksburn watermark. G to VG   Toulouse-Lautrec and Grenier were fellow students in the Paris atelier of academic history painter Fernand Cormon during the 1880s and became friends. Lautrec lived briefly with Grenier and his mistress, Lili, an actress and model, and made several portrayals of the couple. Toulouse-Lautrec most probably refers in the present letter to Juliette Pascal, who was the wife of Joseph Pascal, a maternal cousin of the French painter. Toulouse-Lautrec painted Madame Juliette Pascal (1871), also At the Piano Madame Juliette Pascal in the Salon at the Chateau Malromé, post-impressionism oil works. The Chateau Malromé is located in the French department of Gironde. It became the home of Toulouse-Lautrec´s mother.

‘it was like the exodus of the children of Israel!!’ GOEBBELS MAGDA: (1901-1945) German Nazi Party member, wife of Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and herself a close ally, companion and political supporter of Adolf Hitler. Magda Goebbels is sometimes referred to as the unofficial 'first lady' of Nazi Germany. An interesting war date A.L., unsigned, lacking the conclusion, four pages, 8vo, Schwanenwerder, 8th June 1941, to Marina Chaliapin, in German. Goebbels commences her letter by remarking 'You will think that I am a faithless and ungrateful friend for not giving you an answer in so long. I've thought so much of you and always wanted to write', adding that her correspondent's first letter was delayed, but she has now received everything, '6 wonderful stockings, two more in the envelope, and both letters. I thank you a thousand times both for the wonderful, extremely thin, and yet durable stockings and much more for your dear letters'. Goebbels continues to send her own news, in part, 'On May 1st I went to the children, and they were all doing wonderfully. But the house was really too primitive and so I made up my mind and moved the entire household and children, 16 people. I simply rented a large van for 28 people and stowed everything, children, staff, my mother and me. All the luggage, strollers, beds, in short it was like the exodus of the children of Israel!! Now, they are at the Grundlsee…..It's a paradise for the kids! They are doing wonderfully…..You know, Marina, if you feel like it in the summer, we'll go to visit them together. You will be delighted!' and also writes of her eldest son, 'With Harald I had a lot of worries, but now I also feel a lot of joy and pride. He participated in the whole military entry into Crete, and for 14 days it was not possible to learn anything from him. The day before yesterday, I received a wonderful letter from him full of victorious pride and joy in life, and today a message from his general that he is fine and that he is still on duty. It was a very difficult day for me. The fear that something would happen to him or that he would be taken prisoner by the English made me very sick and I didn't want to see or speak to anyone. I was all alone in Schwanenwerder and had even sent the staff away.' The final line of text in the letter as it exists today refers to her former sister-in-law, Ella Quandt, 'a dear friend of mine'.
