Attributed to André Bouys (French 1656 -1740)Still life with fruit and bread on a tableOil on canvas80.5 x 97cm (31½ x 38 in.)Provenance:Private Collection, FranceThe painting is attributed to André Bouys, at the suggestion of Eric Turquin Expertise S.A., Paris, on the basis of its similarity in composition and style to other still lives by the artist. André Bouys was born in Hyères in southern France in 1656. He was a pupil of François de Troy in Paris, where he established his reputation as one of the foremost portrait painters of his generation, becoming a member of the French Academy in 1688. Although his principal occupation was as a portraitist, towards the end of his career Bouys specialised in still life pictures of tables laden with luxurious food, drink, and wares, of which the present lot is a fine example. Condition Report: The canvas is unlined but has five patches to the reverse (see image online). Fine surface cracking and stretcher marks but the paint appears to be stable. Inspection under UV reveals scattered areas of fine retouching across the image as well as layers of old varnish. These restorations are all well executed and not visible to the naked eye. A Swiss 17th century silver-gilt tazzamaker's mark for Johannes Schwyzer, Zurich circa 1660 Of circular form with shallow bowl, the centre monogrammed 'AM.AMVH' above finely engraved conjoined coats of arms, a dedicated engraving below to 'Johan Bernhart Burckhart, Diac. Zu Gossau, 1669', a cast baluster with knop stem, on a raised stepped circular foot, height 19cm, diameter 15cm, weight 8.2oz.Footnotes:Johan Bernhart BURCKHART (1645-1740) Basel, Switzerland, the Protestant son of Johan Balthasar BURCKHART (1587-1666) by Katharina GÜNZER (1609-1685). Like his father Burckhart became a soldier, joining the Swiss Guards in France in 1669 under Louis XIV, and serving with the infamous Peter Stuppa (1620-1701, Colonel of the Swiss Guards). Burckhart's brother Daniel also served in the same regiment, but died in the battle of Charleroi in 1674. In 1684 Burckhart married the wealthy Charlotte Antoinette von SCHMIDTMANN (1662-1745), the daughter of Protestant nobleman Johann Jakob, Baron de Thiepval, a French lieutenant-colonel. Burckhart rose to Captain in the elite Swiss Guards and commanded a battalion in France until 1690. On his return to Basel he was an active member of the Swiss Grand Council, the Petit Conseil in 1704, and then the Council of Thirteen (1706-1739) with responsibility for Swiss military matters. His sixteen years of military service in France made Burckhart a man with valuable expertise in the Basel defence system, and as such he became war commissioner and colonel in the Basel Militia. He was responsible for carrying out numerous important missions, notably at the French Court. If that was not enough, he was also elected the Bailiff of Münchenstein, like his father before him. The wealth of his wife allowed them to purchase and expand Pratteln Castle, the courtyard of which still bears his arms. Burckhart's long marriage produced five daughters and four sons and he lived to the venerable age of 95 years old, a testament to a life well lived, a revered, immensely capable and respected member of Swiss society. Please note that the family name BURCKHART has a number of well used variants and is not uncommon as a German surname, with the family being part of the German speaking population in Switzerland. In terms of the two coats of arms engraved on the tazza, they do not appear to have a link to the Burckhart family name. It has been established that the 'AM', the paternal arms, could refer to either the MELIN family of Paris or the MO(S)NARD family of Marche Champs, and the maternal arms of 'VH' are for the HALLWEIL family of Bern, Switzerland. It is believed that in 1669 John Bernhart BURCKHART received an award of the tazza, which was sponsored by the family whose arms are displayed. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

AFTER FREDERIC LEIGHTON, 1ST BARON LEIGHTON P.R.A., R.W.S., KNOWN AS SIR FREDERIC LEIGHTON (BRITISH, 1830-1896): A LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF 'AN ATHLETE WRESTLING A PYTHON'Of recent manufactureThe figure standing on a rectangular naturalistic base, signed, dated and numbered to one side F. LEIGHTON 1877 and dated 2018, numbered 1/6 and stamped with the foundry mark for brown patina, 53cm wide, 66cm deep, 101cm high (20 1/2in wide, 25 1/2in deep, 39 1/2in high) Footnotes:Provenance: Previously on display at Leighton House, 12 Holland Park Road, London. Today 'Athlete Wrestling with a Python' is noted as Leighton's sculptural masterpiece and was influenced by antique Greek sculpture, particularly 'The Laocoön' which formed part of the Vatican sculpture collection and which influenced the work of Michangelo.Representing a dramatic life and death scene of a classical male nude contending a python which is coiled around his left thigh and whose head is held at bay by his rigidly outstretched arm, the statues powerful and complex design commands a sense of suppressed energy and opposing forces momentarily balanced at a point of supreme tension. Although the striking realism of the figures anatomy was undoubtedly influenced by the sculptors of antiquity and the Renaissance it also owned a debt to contemporary French sculpture which gave it a naturalism far removed from the more pedestrian excesses of the neo-classical works produced by sculptors of a generation before. The model for the work was professional sitter Angelo Colorosi, who was a leading figure in the Italian group of professional male models in the later 19th century. From contemporary interviews which Leighton made with the Studio magazine in the early 1890s, the sculptor originally modelled it as a small-scale clay figure. However, the decision to turn it into a large-scale bronze was made on the encouragement of either Jules Dalou (French, 1838-1901) who was in exile in London during that time or Alphonse Legros (French, 1837-1911). Assisted by Leighton's protégé, Thomas Brock (British, 1847-1922), the full-size model first modelled in plaster and then cast in bronze by Cox & Son was then exhibited at the Royal Academy. Its influence was far reaching to the new generation of emerging New Sculpture artists including the young Brock, Hamo Thorneycroft, Alfred Gilbert, Edward Onslow Ford and George Frampton. The sculpture's popularity was sealed when it was purchased on behalf of the Tate by the Chantrey Bequest in 1877 and it won the gold medal when it appeared at the prestigious Exposition Universelle in Paris the following year. A monumental marble replica of the sculpture was subsequently commissioned by the wealthy Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen for the museum bearing his name in 1882 and much of the carving for this work was done by the New Sculpture sculptor Frederick Pomeroy (British, 1856-1924) at the start of his career whilst still working in Brocks studios.A Lifetime casting of Leighton's bronze figure of an Athlete Wrestling a Python (52.5cm high) was sold at Bonhams, New Bond Street, in the Important Design Sale, 5 April 2017, lot 32This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
