GERMAN SCHOOL, 17th centuryan impressive 17th century memento mori still life oil painting, painted with end-of-life symbolism including skull and crossbones, hourglass, early clock, pendant pocket watch, marble bust, candle and candle holder, pipe with bubbles, flower arrangement and a book titled in Latin 'Mors Omvia Aequat' - 'death makes all things equal', oil on canvas84 x 113cm, framed Condition report: The canvas has been lined. There is craquelure in parts. There are some superficial surface abrasions in parts, see illustration. Under UV light, there is retouching apparent in places throughout the composition. the painting is presented in a gilded and sgraffito-ed frame and ready to hang.

Label on the back: Grosse Deutsche Kunstausstellung 1942 im Haus der Deutschen Kunst zu München. Provenance: Verlag Heinrich Hoffmann (HDK no. 271). The Haus der Deutschen Kunst was opened in 1937 and used as an exhibition room for artists approved by the Nazi-regime until 1945. The work was acquired by the art collector and official photographer of Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Hoffmann (1885-1957). Hoffmann had a shop in Munich in the '20s where Eva Braun worked as his assistant. Board 119 x 89 cm.
