•WILLIAM CROSBIE RSA, RGI (SCOTTISH 1915-1999) STILL LIFE OF FRUIT Oil on board, signed and dated LXXXIII, 31 x 41cm (12 1/4 x 16") Portrait study of a woman signed and dated LXXXII verso Condition Report: On inspection both the pigment and the board appear to be in good condition with no significant issues to report.
A BROOCH BY ROBERT KOCH to celebrate Queen Victoria's life, a stylised '80' interlinked with a diamond shape, set with a lilac chalcedony. The reverse stamped R. Koch and engraved with VR1 and the date of the Queens death January 1901. Weight approx 14.4gms. Robert and Louis Koch were celebrated Royal court jewellers based in Frankfurt 1879 - until their deaths in 1902 and 1930. European Royals still wear tiaras made by the brothers to this day Condition Report: According to wikipedia and other sources Victoria was born 24th May 1819 and died 22nd January 1901, which would make her 81 when she died, the designer obviously thought that 80 was a better fit with his design, more balanced, or maybe it was made in advance due to the Queen poor health at the end. In lovely condition throughout, gold has a subtle bloomed texture, chalcedony has an almost pearly appearance. Clasp is an enclosed hook and pin, works fine, the clasp also stamped Koch. .
§ Philip Sutton, RA (British, b.1928) Israeli Landscape inscibed to verso with title and dated '1951/2' oil on canvas (unframed) 123 x 91cm (48 x 35in) Other Notes: Born in Poole, Philip Sutton was educated at the Slade School of Fine Art and is best known for his colourful portrayal of landscapes and still life scenes. 'Israeli Landscape' (1951-52), like many of his other earlier works, highlights the influence of Matisse on the artist's bold use of colour. Sutton had his first solo show at Roland, Browse & Delbanco in 1956 and his works were featured in retrospectives at the Leeds City Art Gallery and the Royal Academy. Canvas taught, cleaned, and subsequently varnished. Extensive craquelure evident in places, particularly about 2/3 down the canvas, where pressure seems to have been applied in a manner conducive to concentric craquelure. Canvas unframed, and edges covered with masking take.
§ George Hooper (British, 1910-1994) Beach in winter with a still life on a ledge signed 'George Hooper' (lower right) watercolour and ink 45 x 61cm (18 x 24in)There is a circular part of the paper which has been torn away at the right hand side and is clear to see in the photograph. This tear continues down the right hand side
§ Adrian Heath (British, 1920-1992) Still life with a cabbage, a bottle and a knife on a table oil on canvas 35.50 x 40cm (14 x 16in) Oil on a fine weave canvas support which is unlined. The paint layer is in a good condition overall. The work is varnished, the varnish is slightly yellowed but glossy and even. There is a layer of surface dirt and white drips along the lower edge.
§ Daphne Fedarb (British, 1912-1992) Blue Boats signed 'Daphne Fedarb' (lower left); examination label to verso 'Ministry of Education, 1950' oil on canvas 68.50 x 89cm (27 x 35in) Provenance: Whitechapel Gallery, London, 'Pictures For Schools', 1959 Other Notes: Daphne Fedarb is known primarily as a landscape and still life painter. She began her artistic career at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1931 and then attended Westminster School of Fine Art where she studied with Mark Gertler and Bernard Meninsky. She exhibited at the Fine Arts Society in 1935 and later at the Royal Academy. Fedarb was particularly influenced by Cubism and Matisse, and her resulting separation of colours into geometric planes can be seen in the present work. Canvas has been painted on the reverse, which has kept lining taught. There is evidence of cleaning and varnishing, along with subsequent retouching. There are two punctures to the canvas towards the bottom middle of the picture
Frances Mary Hodgkins (New Zealand/British, 1869-1947) Still life with a vase of flowers and eggs signed 'Frances Hodgkins' (lower right) watercolour 49.50 x 39.50cm (19 x 15in) Other Notes: It has been suggested that this work dates to 1931 when Hodgkins was in St Tropez and painted a large number of very similar still lifes and landscapes. The inclusion of eggs and a cork tree in the background were much favoured motifs by Hodgkins during this period. The present painting will be included in Mary Kisler's forthcoming online catalogue raisonné. We are grateful to Mary Kisler for her kind assistance with this catalogue entry. Discolouration and browning around the edge possibly due to previous framing. Slight discolouration around the left of the material drape. It has been painted on a buff card which may give the impression of yellowing - it possibly has lost some if its colour. There is a faint 3 inch surface crease to the upper part of the picture. Little roughing to the edge towards the top of the picture due to it being taken out the frame at some stage. Some faint scratching to the board, some scoring to the reverse.
§ Robert MacBryde (Scottish, 1913-1966) Still life with an oil lamp and a basket of eggs on a table signed 'MacBryde' (lower left) oil on canvas 74.50 x 59cm (29 x 23in) Other Notes: Robert MacBryde was a popular artist with council authorities; both Cambridgeshire and Leicestershire purchased still life paintings for their collections. Unlike these pictures, however - which were both exhibited at the National Gallery of Scotland's exhibition, 'The Two Roberts: Robert Colquhoun & Robert MacBryde' in 2014 - the Hertfordshire MacBryde is a work previously unknown to scholars. Although we do not know when the picture was executed, stylistically, it fits in with several works painted by Macbyde between 1955-60. The similarity of titles and the absence of dimensions in MacBryde's exhibition catalogues around this period makes it difficult to establish the provenance of the present picture. We do know that Cambridgeshire County Council purchased their still life, 'Red and Black Still Life' from the Kaplan Gallery, London 'Recent Paintings by Robert MacBryde', April 1960'. We are grateful to Roger Bristow for his kind assistance with this catalogue entry.Oil on canvas which is unlined. The paint layers have been thickly applied. In many areas the paint passages have been built up in several layers which have a different appearance under ultraviolet light, this appears to be part of the artist's technique rather than a later reworking. There are drying cracks in some areas of the painting which have formed as the paint layer has dried. There are localised areas of cracking in the paint layers, some with slightly raised edges. There are light scuffs and scratches to the surface and layer of dirt and dust. The painting was likely cleaned at some stage, which may have resulted in the fading of the signature.
*** Edwards (British, 20th Century) Still life with apples, a glass and a wine bottle oil on canvas 48.50 x 58.50cm (19 x 23in) Small tear (3 sides of a square) in the canvas of the left side apple. Discolouration in places. Extensive cleaning has also led to thinning of the paint and areas where the original primed canvas shows through. A lot of overpainitng and retouching is also evident.
