MARIE VOROBIEFF MAREVNA (RUSSIAN 1892 - 1984), REVOLUTION oil on board, signed and dated 1970 67cm x 90cm Framed. Provenance: This painting was gifted to Mrs Nina Barnes of Ainsdale Road, Ealing, London by the artist. Mrs Barnes used the professional name of Nina Walker and was Chorus Master, Royal Choral Society, Repetiteuse and Chorus Master at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and Recitalist with Caballe. Nina Barnes and Morevna became friends through their attendance at Ealing Abbey which they both lived close to. Nina Barnes passed away in November 2018. Notes: Born Marie Bronislava Vorobyeva-Stebelska (????? ????????????? ?????????-???????????) in Cheboksary, Russia. Marevna is internationally known for convincingly combining elements of cubism (called by her "Dimensionalism") with pointillism and – through the use of the Golden Ratio for laying out paintings – structure. She has been accredited with being the first female cubist painter. Though she lived the greater part of her life abroad – her formative years as a cubist painter in France and her mature years in England – she is usually referred to as a "Russian painter". In 1910 she went to Moscow to study at the Stroganov Art Academy, but in the following year left for Italy. On the island of Capri she was introduced to Maxim Gorki who nicknamed her "Marevna" (after a Russian fairy sea princess). She adopted the nickname and was widely known as Marevna for the rest of her life. A petite blue-eyed blonde, she was said not to have been a conventional beauty; but an outgoing nature paired with the proverbial depth of the Russian soul seems to have given her a charm which made her "special" to all who knew her. She moved to Paris in 1912 as an aspiring twenty year old. It was there that she became friends with some of the greatest artists and writers of the early twentieth century then resident in Montparnasse and especially at La Ruche, among them were Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Marc Chagall , Jean Cocteau, Ilya Ehrenburg, Max Jacob, Moise Kisling, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani and Chaim Soutine. It was while a resident of La Ruche that Marevna met the gifted Mexican cubist and later muralist artist Diego Rivera. Diego Rivera was nearly 30 at the time and at the zenith of his cubist phase, having already exhibited his works at three exhibitions. Marevna herself discovered cubism as an eminently suited vehicle for her own talent. Rivera was a known womanizer of fiery temper and began a relationship with Marevna while he was still in a common-law marriage with the Russian artist Angelina Beloff who was pregnant with Rivera's son. Despite Diego Rivera's assurances of his love for Marevna, their relationship ended soon after the birth on 13 November 1919 in Paris of their daughter Marika. It's probable that Marevna never fully recovered from the break up of her relationship with Rivera and it's reported that after her death her ashes were laid in the Rivera mausoleum in Mexico. Marevna exhibited widely in France and Europe throughout her career, as well as at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1968; and more recently a major retrospective was held at the Russian State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, in 2004. A small collection of her work is held at Athelhampton House in Dorset where she lived with her daughter during the 1950’s. Her work is also in several museums including a substantial collection at the Musée Petits Palais in Geneva. When her daughter's marriage ended Marevna moved to the London suburb of Ealing with her daughter and two grandsons. A substantial number of her paintings were bought by international collector Oscar Ghez in 1967. Marevna died in London on 4th May 1984. Her work can command high prices at auction including Nu Allongé (1930), at Aguttes, Paris lot 34 19/6/2009 sold for 266,966 EUR (premium) and Hasidic Dance During Chanukah Celebration (1970), at Sotheby's, New York lot 125 26/4/2006 sold for 228,000 USD (premium).

Chuck Ripper (American, B. 1929) "Hawaiian Goose" Signed lower left. Original Gouache/Watercolor painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.N. 32c Hawaiian Goose Endangered Species stamp issued March 13, 1998. The state bird of Hawaii, the Hawaiian Goose is a magnificent looking bird characterized by its barred neck, checkered chest and black cap. The least aquatic of all geese, it favors high, sparsely vegetated, inhospitable volcanic slopes, often far from water. The Hawaiian Goose has become so adapted to its harsh environment that it has essentially evolved into a land bird, with uncommonly long legs, reduced webbing on its feet and unusually strong, well-padded toes designed for navigating the coarse lava flows. It feeds on grasses, berries and leaves, and acquires its water from the food it eats and by drinking dew from its feathers. Families of Hawaiian Geese travel together until the young are a year old, dispersing when the next nesting season begins. Pairs are monogamous and mate for life, with the male protecting the female throughout incubation. At one time, the Hawaiian Goose could be found in abundance throughout the Hawaiian Islands. But as the Islands' human population grew, so did the numbers of cats, wild dogs, feral pigs, rats and the Indian mongoose. The Hawaiian Goose has no defense against these predators, especially during its long moulting season when the bird is unable to fly for six to eight weeks. By 1950, a mere 30 to 50 Hawaiian Geese remained in the wild. The remarkable bird was saved from extinction through captive breeding-and-release programs. Today, approximately 800 wild Hawaiian Geese can be found on the Islands, all of which are still threatened by predators. Image Size: 12.5 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 15 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B15882)

Howard Koslow (1924 - 2016) "Space Exploration - Mars w/ Viking Orbiter" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the United States 29c Mars with Viking Orbiter stamp issued October 1, 1991. So similar to Earth, yet so different, Mars has all the ingredients necessary for life as we know it. So said the Viking spacecraft, which explored the Red Planet beginning in 1976. The Martian atmosphere contains oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and even water vapor, though the planet is drier than Earth's driest desert. Still, evidence gathered by Viking shows that at one time water flowed on Mars. There are abundant channels apparently carved by running water -- and scientists analyzing Viking data theorize there was once enough water on Mars to cover the entire planet 33 feet deep. While Viking found no canals, it did observe geological features scientists feel were caused by large bodies of water. Viking also observed storms on Mars, whirling in a cyclonic fashion identical to terrestrial weather phenomena. Other Viking data suggests that Mars was once warmer and its atmosphere substantially thicker than at present. Today, the Martian atmosphere is but 1/100 as thick as Earth's and temperatures are bitterly cold, with daytime highs only approaching -20?F. Much of the planet's scant remaining water is locked in the north polar cap, which grows in the winter and shrinks in the summer, and in a layer of underground permafrost. Despite the wealth of information gathered by Viking, a number of questions remain. What happened to all the Martian water? And is there life on Mars? Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 19.25 x 17.25 in. Unframed. (B13296)

Shannon Stirnweis (Arizona, New York, New Hampshire Oregon, B. 1931) "Alaska Brown Bear" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Alaska Brown Bear issued on June 13, 1987. Although several species of Brown Bears are native to a number of regions around the world, the largest of these - and indeed the world's largest living terrestrial carnivore - is the Alaska Brown Bear. Also known as the Kodiak Bear, these Bears may reach nine feet in length and weigh more than three-quarters of a ton. Preferring a solitary life, when spring arrives, these huge Bears shuffle along well-worn trails to salmon-rich streams where they feed after the winter's hibernation. Frequently, the Bears will quarrel over territorial fishing rights. After disputes are settled, they get down to the business of catching fish. Fishing techniques differ between individuals. Some Bears wade out among the fish and squat down so that the currenct boils over them, and when a fish passes by, an effortless head nod or paw swipe yields a meal. Others wait by the banks for fish darting close to shore so a powerful brown paw can pin it down. Still other Bears refuse to fish at all, preferring to sneak off with an unwary neighbor's catch. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B10955)

(168 - 4272)In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Abstract Painting. Titled: "Virtual Interior / Mirror Matrix" Dated: '93 Oil on Board. Signed and dated verso. Overall Size: 15.25 x 23.25 in. (149 - 4323) In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia. Keith Bowen (UK, B. 1950) "Redwing Thrush" Signed lower left. Original Chalk on Construction Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the Great Britain 33p Wintertime Redwing Thrush stamp issued January 14, 1992. Large, stout and sturdy-legged, the redwing is an annual winter visitor to Britain. True thrushes are found on all continents except Australia and Antarctica. This thrush family member most commonly occurs in Scandinavia and north Russia, but seeks more hospitable environments during harsh northern winters. Spotted-breasted like other thrush relatives, the redwing sports reddish-brown wings and flanks. It inhabits open grasslands and farmlands, where remnants of spring cultivation still yield respectable harvests of insect life. The redwing digs up its food, and frozen ground means that a sizable number of these birds perish during excessively frigid winters. As winters wanes and the weather warms, the redwing flies northward to nest. The redwing nest resembles a grass cup and can be found on the ground or in trees and shrubs. Its foundation is comprised of twigs and earth, and the female somtimes embellishes it with lichen or moss. In early summer she lays from four to six eggs which are blue-green in color and are flecked with reddish-brown markings. She incubates for approximately two weeks, and the hatchlings are fed by both parents for 14 days thereafter. This artwork features an image of this unadorned member of the thrush family, which remains one of Britain's most vocal wintertime visitors. Image Size: 18 x 21 in. Overall Size: 22 x 26 in. Unframed. (B13556)
