Lot 1

Mark Gertler (1891-1939)/Still Life/with earthenware vessel and blue ewer/signed and dated July 1922/oil on board, 31.75cm x 40cm/Note:This still life was painted during the artist's stay with Bonamy and Valentine Dobrée in Larrau in the Pyrenees in the summer of 1922. The still life objects, an earthenware pitcher, a blue enamel jug and a stark white tablecloth, though atypical in Gertler's work, which generally re-uses favourite props that can be traced from one painting to the next, are characteristic of rustic French interiors of the period. Another still life with similar earthenware can be dated to this visit. However, the landscape glimpsed through and framed by the window, painted in soft, diagonal strokes is typical of Gertler's landscapes between 1919 and 1920, and the framing device can be found in other contemporaneous still lifes. This work will be included in Sarah MacDougall's catalogue raisonée of Mark Gertler's work and we thank her for her assistance with this catalogue note CONDITION REPORT: The painting has had an amateur varnish, this has gone over onto the inner slip of the frame as well. There is a repair to the frame slip and a few knocks and dents. The overall appearance is good but I think removal of the old varnish might be advisable.

Lot 16

Doris Brabham Hatt (1890-1969)/Still Life with Guitar/initialled and dated '61/oil on board, 19.5cm x 24cm CONDITION REPORT: The paint surface appears in good condition, there is some slight shrinkage to the black painted areas like the jug and the neck of the guitar. The frame has been repainted at some point. Some spots of water staining to reverse of board. Overall condition good.ARR Artist's Resale Right may apply to the sale of this lot if the hammer price is the equivalent of 1000 Euros or more, incurring an additional fee. Thomas Koether (New York, Florida, Europe, Australia, b. 1940) Abstract Painting.Titled: "Yellow Menagerie"Dated: '89 / '96Oil on Canvas. Signed and dated verso, twice. Overall Size: 52 x 42 in. (224 - 4265)In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Students League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ’71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces – one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness – landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia. Lizzie Riches. Three of Hearts. Oil painting on canvas, 24 x 18cm. Signed. Lizzie has been a painter all her life. She joined the Portal Gallery in Londons West End in the early 70s and still exhibits with them. Her paintings are inspired by many things ; Greek mythology , Tudor portraiture and the power of symbolism among them. The pips on the three of hearts reminded her of jewels that a vampish lady might wear. Blood red rubies look a little sinister to me !
