GEORGE LESLIE HUNTER (SCOTTISH 1877 - 1931), STILL LIFE WITH FLOWERS oil on board, signed 40cm x 30cm Framed Provenance:Gifted to the vendor by the French artist Francois Bret at La Colombe d'Or (Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France) in 2003. The vendor and his wife established a friendship with Francois Bret during regular visits to La Colombe d'Or and have supplied McTear's with correspondence and a photograph confirming this friendship , copies of which are available on request.
* SIR WILLIAM OLIPHANT HUTCHISON HRA PRSA VPRP (SCOTTISH 1889 - 1970), STILL LIFE WITH FLOWERS AND A CANDLE oil on panel, signed 44.5cm x 37cm (17.5 x 14.5 inches) Original frame Label verso: Doig Wilson & Wheatley. Note: Hutchison attended The Edinburgh College of Art between 1909 and 1912. On leaving he started The Edinburgh Group, holding exhibitions for three consecutive years, with Eric Robertson, Alick Riddell Sturrock, John Guthrie Spence Smith, Dorothy Johnstone, Mary Newbery, and David Macbeth Sutherland who later became Principal at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen. Hutchison also worked and studied in Paris for a while, mainly painting portraits though also producing landscape and figure paintings. In 1918 he married Marjery, youngest daughter of Edward Arthur Walton. Hutchison was Director of the Glasgow School of Art from 1933 to 1943, from all accounts being an excellent director. Though a great traditionalist he encouraged those who tended to the avant-garde. On leaving the Glasgow School of Art, Hutchison carried on with portraiture both in Edinburgh and London. A large exhibition of his work was held in London in 1964. Public collections include: The Hunterian, The National Portrait Gallery, Glasgow Museums, The National Galleries Of Scotland, UK Parliamentary Art Collection, The Fleming Collection, The BBC, National Trust Scotland, Glasgow School of Art, and the museums of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee, Kirkcaldy, Paisley & Fife. His still life paintings rarely appear at auction but "Yellow Tulips", an oil of 44cm x 36.5cm was sold at Bonhams (Edinburgh) on 15.04.14, lot 83, for £6000 (premium).

MARSHALL "Still life of fruit tumbling out of basket", oil on canvas, signed and dated 1889 lower left CONDITION REPORTS Size approx. 34.5 x 24 cm, overall with wear and scuffs, craqueleur to paint, some undulations to surface, some deterioration to finish and varnish and may have had some re-varnishing and repairs/touch-up paint, there are various areas forming oval type shapes of similar size to the grapes which are slightly visible in the lower foreground so may be alterations/restoration.
