Alton Rowland Lowe (b.1945), still life of white Hibiscus, towel, plums and straw basket, signed lower left, oil on canvas, 39 x 50 cm, gilt frame, sold with the original receipt dated 1972 for $400.00 and a booklet illustrating the painting DDS Lowe is an artist active in the Bahamas. He studied in Miami and New York but returned to the Bahamas to capture the essence of his country in his art. His paintings have been acquired by corporate institutions, members of the British Royal Family and the prime ministers of several countries. The government of the Bahamas has used copies of Mr. Lowe's work on some 50 national postage stamps.
§ Glynn Boyd Harte (British, 1948-2003) Freesias signed lower right "Glynn Boyd Harte" and numbered 16/100 lithograph 60 x 85cm (23 x 33in) Provenance: The Francis Kyle Gallery, 9 Maddox Street, London, W1 Other Notes: Glynn Boyd Harte was born in Lancashire in 1948 and graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1973. He had over twenty one-man shows of drawings, prints and watercolours in London, Paris and New York. He wrote and illustrated two books - 'Glynn Boyd Harte's Venice' and 'Mr. Harte's Holiday' - the latter being about the north coast of France where he had a house and studio. He travelled extensively, from St. Petersburg to San Francisco, with frequent stays painting in Paris. More recently, Harte completed a commission to record in watercolour the progressive stages of the construction of the new Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. His work was then displayed in the finished building. Boyd Harte, represented by the Francis Kyle Gallery 1978-1987, reacted against predominant trends with his beautifully composed still-lifes and outdoor scenes showing everyday, yet uplifting scenes. From the mid-1970s, he also illustrated a number of books and from the 1990s contributed to The Daily Telegraph and The Times. Boyd Harte also exhibited a series of architectural studies at the Museum of London to mark the Millennium. Boyd Harte performed in cabaret with fellow artist Ian Archibald Beck and they collaborated on several pantomimes performed at the Art Worker's Guild - of which he was Master in 1995. One of his songs from his musical about the life of Edward Lear was played by his old tutor, Paul Hogarth, as one of his choices on Desert Island Discs. Boyd Harte divided his time between his homes in Fitzrovia, London and Normandy, France. Glynn Boyd Harte died on 16 December 2003. Condition is fine.
§ Paul Nash (British, 1889-1946) Still Life II signed lower right in pencil "Paul Nash" and numbered 25/50 in pencil upper left woodcut 18 x 15cm (7 x 6in) Provenance: The Redfern Gallery, 20 Cork Street, London, W1; where purchased by the late vendor in April 1961. Other Notes: Paul Nash (1889-1946) was among the most important landscape artists of the first half of the 20th century and a key exponent of Modernism. In good condition. Some slight creasing to the paper to the lower left corner. Frame has scratches and needs re-taping at the back.
§ Henry Trivick (British, 1908-1982) Still life with jug, pipe and Kentucky Club tobacco signed lower right "Trivick" oil on canvas, in a white and gold painted frame 39 x 20cm (15 x 8in) Provenance: A gift from the artist to the vendor's mother and by descent. A little dirty. Canvas "6 MB". Old exhibition label - 370.
Krishna Ara (Indian, 1913-1985) Still life of white flowers and a bowl of grapes signed lower right "Ara" mixed media on paper, in a cream painted frame 70 x 55cm (27 x 21in) Provenance: Bought from Chemoulds in Park Street, Calcutta, by Evan Charlton, the vendor's son 's godfather and friend. Evan Charlton was Editor of the Calcutta Statesman newspaper and they met in 1957. Mr Charlton was a collector of Indian paintings and miniatures. The vendor bought the Ara from Mr Charlton in the 1960s. Krishna Ara was part of the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay, which included fellow contemporary Indian artists Maqbool Fida Husain, Hari Ambadas Gade, Syed Haider Raza, Francis Newton Souza and Sadan and Bakre. This group founded the Artists' Centre at Kala Ghoda in Mumbai. Ara's first solo exhibition was held at the Chetana Restaurant in Bombay in 1942 and was a huge success. As well as exhibiting with the Progessive Artists' Group, he held other successful solo shows in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Calcutta as well as across Europe and Russia later in his career. His work was acquired by the Kuma Gallery in New Dehli. In original painted frame whcih is a little chipped and there is a little dirt under the glass.
Lena Kurovska (Ukrainian, 20th Century) Still life of chrysanthemums in a white vase, with apples and peaches on a table signed lower right "Kurovska '88" oil on canvas 65 x 75cm (25 x 29in) Other Notes: Lena Kurovska was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1969. She studied at the Kiev Academy of Art under the well-known Ukrainian artist A.Lopukhov and her work is still displayed at the Academy. Her work is also held in collections internationally. Condition appears fine.
§ Douglas Swan (American/Scottish, 1930-2000) Still Life signed lower right "D Swan" oil on canvas, in a cream painted frame 40 x 50cm (16 x 20in) Provenance: The Piccadilly Gallery, 16 Piccadily Arcade, London, SW1, September 1957. Other Notes: Douglas Swan (1930 - 2000) was born in Connecticut, USA of Scottish parents, moving to Carnoustie, Scotland in 1936. After National Service and studying at Dundee Art College, he began exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy. Awarded the RSA scholarship in London in 1954, he met and formed a lasting friendship with the artist William Scott. They painted together in Somerset and Cornwall and Swan exhibited at Gimpel Fils in London in 1957. Swan, together with other St Ives artists, Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon, Anthony Benjamin and Trevor Bell, was awarded a British Council Scholarship to study in Italy in 1958. In the late 1960s Swan moved with his wife to live in Switzerland, and then to Germany in the mid 1970s, becoming an important and established abstract painter. Throughout his life he would return to his parental home at Carnoustie on the east coast of Scotland to paint. He died in Germany in 2000. During his career, Swan showed with the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Young Contemporaries, The London Group, Artists International Association (AIA), The Scottish Gallery and with notable London galleries including Gimpel Fils, Piccadilly Gallery, and Waddington Gallery. From 1957 he exhibited widely with solo shows in Italy, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands and Switzerland. Solo exhibitions in the UK include Stone Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne (1959 & 1964) and Bradford City Art Gallery (1960), and a touring exhibition organised by Artsite Gallery, Bath in 1986. With original Piccadilly Gallery receipt. Surface dirt present throughout. Area of paint loss to lower left edge. Scuffing and abrasions to paint surface along this entire lower edge. Thickly applied paint in areas, particularly in upper left area. Gap in between the lower edge and the frame. Frame has some dirt, scratches and abrasions.
§ Patricia Carloss Irving (British, 20th Century) Still Life with Pineapple and Flowers signed lower left "Patricia Carloss Irving" acrylic on paper, 2001 68 x 51cm (27 x 20in) Other Notes: Patricia Carloss Irving trained and worked as a commercial and industrial photographer in the1980s and 1990s, obtaining a First Class Honours in Public Art (Surrey Roehampton University) and a Masters degree in Printmaking (Anglia Ruskin University). She has shown her work in many prestigious galleries and exhibitions including The Royal Academy Summer Show. Patricia Carloss Irving has been obsessed with how art is produced for many years. Experimenting with different techniques and materials such as a combination of acrylic paint, oil paints, modelling pastes, collage, sand and grit amongst many more. These experiments have resulted in the intrepid and bold style visible today. Primarily a colourist, Patricia makes use of complementary colours to express her passion for the subject matter. Still Life with Pineapple and Flowers makes use of dynamic colour: bright pinks, reds and acid greens express the vibrancy and excitement of the still life. Colours are thickly applied to the paper base.
§ Patricia Carloss Irving (British, 20th Century) The Blue Bottle signed lower left "Patricia Carlos Irving" collage on paper, 1998 79 x 52½cm (31 x 20in) Assemblies such as these are first carefully arranged and studied before paper is painted in vivid colours, torn and collaged creating dynamic and exciting images. Patricia Carloss Irving works very fast and directly from the still life and this produces the energy and immediacy apparent in the finished oeuvre.
