λ Hamish Mackie (British b. 1973)Leopard Turning in Tree Bronze Signed, dated 2012 and numbered 5/12 to trunk Height 44cm (17 1/4in.) Inc. base 50.5cm (19 7/8in.)Provenance:Collier & Dobson, Fordingbridge, HampshireAcquired from the above by the present owner 'You should be able to look wildlife sculpture in the eye and see life' (Hamish Mackie)Hamish Mackie (b.1973) is a considered one of the world's foremost wildlife sculptors. Largely self-taught, Mackie's subjects range from livestock to birds to wild animals, all observed in their natural environment. From the first impressionistic sketches and quick models in plasticine, Mackie works to build up a detailed and atomically accurate core covered with a vibrant skin which serves to capture each individual animal's personality. As with lots 174, 175 and 177 offered here, Mackie often works in bronze. Caracal Head, Leopard Turning in Tree and Sitting Leopard Head all demonstrate Mackie's ability to covey a spontaneous and instinctive moment of an animal's behaviour, from a leopard stretching out and relaxing in a tree to the caracal with his ears pricked up and eyes alert as though he may have just spotted potential prey. It is these intimate moments which Mackie so skilfully depicts which help to bring the sculptures to life. Mackie's love for animals developed at an early age when in 1978, aged five, he moved with his family to a farm in Lostwithiel, Cornwall and was often tasked with looking after the livestock. It was here that he made his first bronze sculpture - a calf's head, given to his father as a Christmas present and which still hangs in the kitchen today. After completing a course in design at Kingston University, Mackie travelled to Africa and in 1995, took a job on a hunting camp in Zimbabwe. It was here that he was able to observe the distinction between an animal in the wild and one in captivity. This interest led him to the conservationist organisation TUSK whom he still supports today. It was during his time in Africa that Mackie fell in love with African wildlife and produced his fist wax sculpture of a cheetah. On his return to the UK, Mackie worked with the sculptor Mark Coreth and began to cast his models in bronze for commercial sale. In 1997, Mackie was accepted into the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition following on from his first solo show with Fanshawe Somerset, London. Several successful solo shows followed and in 2013 Mackie was commissioned to produce six horses galloping through Berkeley Group Holdings in Spitalfields, London. In 2016, Mackie was awarded the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association's (PMSA) annual Marsh Award for Excellence in Public Sculpture and Public Fountains.

The Hans Schifferle Collection 1995 Ducati 916 Monoposto 'Carbon Special'Registration no. not registeredFrame no. ZDM916S 004446Engine no. ZDM916W4 004893•Believed purchased new by Hans•MS Productions carbon fuel tank and body panels•Öhlins front and rear suspension•4,872 kilometres recordedAlthough Ducati's water-cooled 8-valve v-twin had been around in its original 851 and 888 incarnations for seven years, and indeed, had already won three World Superbike Championships, it was the arrival of the iconic 916 in 1994 that really captured the public's imagination. Styled by Massimo Tamburini, the 916 and its subsequent evolutions established Ducati as one of the world's foremost brand names. Universally recognised as icons of automotive art, Ducati motorcycles have been exhibited in some of the world's foremost museums, including the Guggenheim in New York and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. In developing the original 851, engineer Massimo Bordi created one of the finest motorcycle power plants ever. By the mid-1980s, Ducati's existing air-cooled 4-valve twins were approaching the end of the development, so Bordi started with a clean sheet in creating their water-cooled, 8-valve, fuel-injected successor. Ducati's trademark desmodromic valve actuation system, which closes the valves mechanically rather than relying on springs, was retained, as was the 90-degree angle between the cylinders. Wrapped around this outstanding engine was a frame, consisting of an intricate trellis of straight tubes, whose design has since become standardised throughout the Ducati range. The integration of all these elements was the key to the 916's success; that and a brilliant on-road performance that eclipsed just about everything else around at the time. The Ducati 916 won the World Superbike Championship in its 1994 debut season and its evolutions three times after that. Enough said. This example started life as a 916 Monoposto before Hans set about modifying the machine to 'carbon' specification, upgrading it with an MS Productions carbon fuel tank and body panels almost entirely throughout. He also fitted Öhlins front forks (believed to cost circa €10,000); Spiegler brakes; Marvic magnesium wheels; and an Öhlins rear shock. The guarantee booklet on file suggests Hans purchased the machine new (in July 1995) from KawaMotor (Kawasaki and Ducati dealer) in Munich. Hemut Lichtenberg advises that the cam belts have been changed every two years, the last occasion in 2019. It is recommended that the purchaser immediately change the belts again. Currently displaying a total of 4,872 kilometres on the odometer, the machine is offered with a German Fahrzeugschein; an expired TüV (MoT) certificate and correspondence; Guarantee and Warranty booklet; and an owner's manual. 1972 Moto Guzzi V7 SportRegistration no. AWW 366KFrame no. VK12224Engine no. VK31221•Very early V7 Sport•Outstandingly original•Full professional overhaul of engine and transmission in 2012The wonderful machine offered here is a very early Moto Guzzi V7 Sport, probably a handful of numbers away from the so-called 'Red Frame' bikes, and is what is unofficially known as a 'Series 1', so all the timing gears are steel pinions (not chains as later) and all the nuts and bolts of superior quality. The vendor bought this V7 Sport from Yesterdays in the Netherlands in 2010, considering it the perfect bike to own and ride while he was working in Switzerland and Germany. The Guzzi was kept at a friend's place in Germany where the friend had an extensive collection. The Guzzi was used frequently up to 2012, covering some 10,000 kilometres in the preceding two years. It was (and still is) supremely original and well preserved, but the vendor wanted to ensure that the mechanicals were up to the requirements of long-distance touring. His friend suggested the V7 to the renowned German classic MV/Ducati/Guzzi specialist Michael Nitzsche of Dorsten, near Essen: 'They did a fantastic job preserving originality while rebuilding everything mechanical but I didn't get much change out of 20,000 euros.' Life then took a different turns and the vendor has only managed to cover around 400 kilometres since the rebuild. In his own words: 'Engine runs like a Swiss clock, doesn't leak a drop of oil, driveshaft is quiet like a modern BMW, the paint is original, everything is original with exception of decals (which are correct for a very early example), all the bits that early V7 guys are looking for are there: original seat with under-seat light; functioning steering column lock and start; original covers on selected nuts and bolts; unmodified air box; improved gearbox stamped '3'; original Borrani wheel rims, etc.' Bills totalling some £24,000 are on file and the Guzzi also comes with a UK V5C Registration Certificate. Used regularly, right up to the time of sale, this rare and desirable V7 Sport is a proper collectors' quality motorcycle, worthy of the closest inspection.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
