CIRCLE OF ROBERT MACBRYDE (1913 - 1966) STILL LIFE oil on board 69cm x 84cm Provenance: Private Collection, London Note: Robert MacBryde was a Scottish still-life and figure painter and a theatre set designer. MacBryde was born in Maybole, Ayrshire, to John MacBryde, a cement labourer, and Agnes Kennedy MacBryde. He worked in a factory for five years after leaving school before studying art at Glasgow School of Art from 1932 to 1937. There, he met Robert Colquhoun, with whom he established a lifelong romantic relationship and professional collaboration, the pair becoming known as "the two Roberts". MacBryde studied and travelled in France and Italy, assisted by scholarships, returning to London in 1939. He shared studio space with Colquhoun, and the pair shared a house with John Minton and, from 1943, Jankel Adler. MacBryde held his first one-person exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in 1943. At the height of their acclaim they courted a large circle of friends - including Michael Ayrton, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and John Minton as well as the writers Fred Urquhart, George Barker, Elizabeth Smart, and Dylan Thomas - and were renowned for their parties at their studio (77 Bedford Gardens). Influenced by Graham Sutherland and John Piper, MacBryde became a well-known painter of the Modernist school of art, known for his brightly coloured Cubist studies. His later work evolved into a darker, Expressionist range of still lifes and landscapes. In collaboration with Colquhoun, he created several set designs during and after the Second World War. These included sets for Gielgud's Macbeth, King Lear at Stratford and Massine's Scottish ballet Donald of the Burthens, produced by the Sadler's Wells Ballet at Covent Garden in 1951. During the 1950s, both MacBryde and Colquhoun lost the attention of the art scene, and as both had become heavy drinkers, serious artistic work became almost impossible. Since neither had any private means, they were reduced at times to near destitution.
* ALEXANDRA (SANDIE) GARDNER (SCOTTISH b 1945), THE ROSE oil on canvas, signed 150cm x 85cm Framed. Note: A large and very special exhibition centrepiece work. Alexandra (Sandie) Gardner studied at Glasgow School of Art under David Donaldson from 1963-1968 and lectured there until 1988. She has won many awards and her highly individual paintings encompass a remarkably wide range of subjects - still life, figure and portrait studies, the nude, landscape, moody bars, diners, restaurants and barber shops.
* MARGOT SANDEMAN (SCOTTISH 1922 - 2009), STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT, oil on canvas, initialled and dated '88 66cm x 41cm Unframed. Note: Personal inscription verso, 'all my best wishes to both, with love from Margot, 4th August 2006' Note 2 : Margot Sandeman was an accomplished Glasgow painter, who worked with Ian Hamilton Finlay and became Joan Eardley`s longest-standing friend, a friendship that lasted until Eardley`s death in 1963. At the Glasgow School of Art she was quickly singled out, along with Eardley, by Hugh Adam Crawford, head of drawing and painting, for an experiment in which a very small number of outstanding students in that 1939 session were selected for special attention. This effectively amounted to a three-year course in two years, with Crawford himself as tutor. The war interrupted her painting career as did the bringing up of her children following her 1946 marriage to ceramicist James Robson. In 1970 she won the Guthrie Award of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Redpath Award from the Society of Scottish Artists and a Scottish Arts Council prize. In 1988-89 she produced a series of large canvases of bathers echoing Matisse and Seurat and in 1989 she was the Scottish Winner of the prestigious Laing Competition. She also collaborated with her old contemporary Ian Hamilton Finlay on his texts and also created a parallel series of still-lifes plus all the illustrations for his "concrete poetry". Sandeman contributed to mixed exhibitions in the UK and US, with her principal solo exhibitions being at the Demarco Gallery in Edinburgh and the Hughson Gallery in Glasgow, with a final show at the Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh in 2006. Her work is represented in public and private collections in Scotland and in private collections in the US and UK.
* CLAIRE HARKESS RSW (SCOTTISH B. 1970 - ), PASSING ISLANDS II watercolour on paper, signed 17cm x 20cm (excluding frame and mount) Mounted, framed and under glass. Multiple labels verso: including The Scottish Gallery, Claire Harkess RSW "Galapagos" (Exhibition) 4th - 28th June 2008 catalogue number 84 where sold. Other Scottish Gallery stock labels with title, medium etc and artist's label. Note: Claire Harkess was born in Ayr, Scotland, graduating from Glasgow School of Art in the early 1990s. In recent years her painting has taken her to fragile lands to study and interpret life on the edge. Antarctica, Outback Australia and St Kilda are all places where, in such extreme environments, survival is difficult and the balance of life is delicate. Harkess has also worked on the Galápagos Islands, made famous by Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of the Species’. This isolated volcanic outpost remained relatively untouched by man, evolving to become one of the World’s unique ecosystems. The balance present in nature is clearly communicated through Claire's paintings. Painting in watercolour or gouache offers a unique directness; the essential qualities of light and energy present in the natural world are the very essence of the medium itself. The delicacy of her palette and oriental economy of her mark-making creates a subtle tension representing a world that is ‘holding still’, giving a sense of freedom, spirit, time and place. Claire's work is exhibited at The Scottish Gallery, where her most recent highly successful solo show was in July 2020, and at other prestigious galleries around the UK.
* FIONA STURROCK, STILL LIFE OF FLOWERS IN A VASE oil on board, signed 59cm x 59cm Framed. Note: Fiona Sturrock’s paintings demonstrate her love of colour and the practice of mixing colour, laying down patterns of light, shade and texture to produce bold representations of what she is observing. She tends to work on one painting at a time, giving it full focus and energy, which often translates visibly in the intensity of colour and boldness of the finished piece of work. Fiona paints from a mixture of life scenes, photographs and imagination. She is influenced by historical works of Colourists and Impressionists, and is hugely inspired by the wealth and richness of contemporary Scottish art that surrounds us in the present day. Fiona’s work features across a number of galleries and is held in private collections internationally.
