The tension is stiff and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. There is a loss at the far left edge. This area also has old losses which have been secured and retouched. Areas of overpaint are mainly located at the left hand side and have slightly darkened overtime. The varnish is even but slightly dull and yellowed with a thick layer of dust across the surface.

* CAROLINE LEBURN, FORNELLS, MENORCA acrylic on canvas board, signed image size 40cm x 40cm, overall size 54cm x 54cm Framed. Note: Caroline was born in London in 1952 and due to European family connections, spent much of her childhood in France & Belgium. She studied at High Wycombe College of Art and Design, where she specialised in painting, sculpture & pottery. She has been living and working in Scotland since 1974 with frequent trips back to the Provence of her childhood. In the tradition of the Scottish Colourists, the quality of light and the vibrant colours of the Mediterranean are found in all her work, be it still life or landscape, Scottish or Mediterranean. There is a resulting peace and serenity to her work. She has exhibited at galleries in London, Munich, Scotland, and was voted “Public Favourite” at the Edinburgh Festival. She also has collections in the UK, France, Portugal, the USA & Mcgrigor Donald in Glasgow. Recent acrylic paintings by Caroline Leburn we have offered include "Pres De La Mer" a 36 x 36cm picture which sold for £440 (hammer) - lot 719, 3rd March 2019 and "Haute Provence" a 40 x 50cm picture which sold for £650 (hammer) - lot 511, 28th Feb 2021.

Label verso: Arran Art Gallery. Note: James Fraser was born in Glasgow in 1958 and after a career in the Civil Service gained a place as a mature student at Edinburgh College of Art in 1999. He was awarded the Heriot Watt University Award for outstanding merit in his first year and received his BA (Hons) in painting from ECA in 2004. ” I tend to favour the still life but not in the traditional sense. My work is a portrayal of objects, figures and nature. Sometimes recognisable, sometimes suggestive, all hopefully arranged in an aesthetic manner". Fraser's work is exhibited widely in galleries throughout Scotland and at The Royal Scottish Academy, The RSW, Paisley Art Institute and The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. James Fraser is an elected professional member of the RSW, Visual Arts Scotland and a member of The Society of Scottish Artists. He won The Glasgow Art Club Award at the 2012 Visual Arts Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy.

Handwritten artist's label verso. Note: Shona Barr was born in 1965 in Glasgow. After graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 1988, where she won the Landscape Prize and the Armour Prize for Still Life, she continued her training at the Kunstakedimi in Oslo, Winchester School of Art, in Barcelona and at the University of Southampton. Drawing her inspiration from nature, Barr's paintings reflect her continued interest in capturing the vitality of the British landscape. Shona Barr has been successfully exhibiting widely since 1989. Her work has been critically acclaimed over the years and can be found in many public, corporate and private collections in Hong Kong, Australia, South Africa, Canada, the USA and throughout the UK.

Artist's label verso. Note: Born in Berkshire, Mackay was brought up in Scotland and educated in Switzerland. She trained at Edinburgh College of Art under William Gillies, graduating in 1965, and undertook postgraduate studies at the Central School of Art, London in 1973. Alongside her career as a professional artist, painting portraits, landscapes and still-life and exhibiting widely, Mackay has worked as a teacher of art, design and ceramics. Her paintings are characterised by bold brushwork and vibrant colours. Mackay lives in Edinburgh. Nine of Lucinda Mackay's works are held in UK public collections including The National Galleries of Scotland.
* KATHLEEN RUSSELL (SCOTTISH b. 1940), STILL LIFE watercolour on paper, signed and dated '14 image size 61cm x 49cm, overall size 81cm x 69cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Artist in gouache, watercolour, oil, pastel, pen and wash, and teacher, born in Edinburgh. Studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1958–63, her tutors including Robin Philipson and Sir William Gillies. She lectured there (ECA) full-time, 1963–72, then taught part-time in London schools until 1980, when she became a full-time painter. Had a long series of solo exhibitions, including French Institute, 1965, New 57 Gallery, 1969, and Douglas & Foulis, 1972, all in Edinburgh; Durham University, 1975; and at The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh from 1981 onwards. Durham University, King’s College and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, hold examples of her work and twelve of her paintings are included in UK public collections. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 20th September 2015 lot 2161 "Sill Life" (ex IBM Collection) by Kathleen Russell sold for £900 (hammer).
* DANNY FERGUSON RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1925 - 1993), SHALLOWS watercolour on paper, signed; titled on RSW Exhibition label verso image size 64cm x 91cm, overall size 75cm x 103cm Framed and under glass. Exhibition label verso: Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water-Colours. Note: b. Lanarkshire, 1925, d. 1993. GSA student 1941-1943, Glasgow School of Art staff 1947-1986 (Both full-time and as a visiting staff member). Danny Ferguson was educated at Airdrie Academy from 1936-1942. He was an athletic youngster, playing football for (amongst others) Baillieston Juniors, Bedlay Juniors, Douglas Water Thistle and Blantyre Victoria (taking over the centre-half position from Jock Stein). Later in life, he was a keen snooker player, frequently championing the Glasgow Art Club, and enjoyed Curling. He began studying at GSA in 1941 but his studies were interrupted when he was called up. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1943 and served in the Far East. He re-joined GSA in 1947 and was awarded his diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1949. That same year he won a £30 prize at the Royal Scottish Academy annual competitions. From 1949-1950 he attended the Jordanhill Teacher Training College. He later combined a position as visiting lecturer at GSA with teaching in various Glasgow Schools. He returned to GSA as a full-time lecturer in 1968. In 1958 Ferguson married Margaret Dunn, also a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, in Embroidery and Weaving. They had two children, Anne and David. Probably best known for his landscapes, still lifes and self-portraits. He exhibited regularly, had numerous one-man shows, and his work still hangs in many collections, including the Royal Collection. Danny Ferguson was elected a member of the RSW in 1969, having exhibited there from 1961. He had over 88 works exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute, from 1957. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. Ferguson also served as honorary secretary of the RGI for nine years and was also elected President of the Glasgow Art Club.
* FLORENCE JAMIESON RSW (SCOTTISH 1925 - 2019), SAND DUNES NEAR MORAR gouache on paper, signed, titled verso image size 35cm x 38cm, overall size 56cm x 59cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Note: Florence Jamieson was born in Glasgow in 1925. The area around Morar had special significance to Florence as she was evacuated to there (from Glasgow) during the war before moving to Galashiels where she became Head Girl of St Trinnean’s, the "progressive" school, which had relocated to Galashiels from Edinburgh at the outbreak of war. St Trinnean’s was the inspiration for Ronald Searle's tales of schoolgirl horrors, although he anglicised the name to St Trinian's. Florence attended Glasgow School of Art and subsequently taught Still Life painting there. She exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy, Society of Scottish Artists, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Royal Glasgow Institute. She also held numerous joint and solo exhibitions mainly in Glasgow, Edinburgh (including at The Scottish Gallery), Perth and Ullapool. In 2014 she was one of four remaining living artists chosen to provide a selection of her work for the prestigious and widely reported ‘Glasgow Girls’ Exhibition at Kirkcudbright Town Hall. She received the Royal Scottish Academy Award and the Royal Glasgow Institute Torrance Award. Florence Jamieson's work is represented in various public collections including: The Kelvingrove Art Gallery, The Hunterian, The Scottish Arts Council, Gracefield Arts Centre (Dumfries) and The Scottish Fisheries Museum. Florence Jamieson's work rarely appears at auction but on 27th October 2005 Christie's The Scottish Sale (Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh) lot 231, a 37.5cm x 19cm gouache and watercolour "Moonlit Sea" by Florence Jamieson sold for £1020 (premium) having been estimated at £1000 - 1500.
* ETHEL WALKER (SCOTTISH b. 1941), THE SILVER TABLE mixed media on paper, signed, titled label verso image size 91cm x 119cm, overall size 120cm x 145cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Handwritten artist's label verso. Note: Almost certainly the largest and most impressive Ethel Walker still life to appear at auction, anywhere. Note: Ethel Walker was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1941. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty seven she was a full time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections world-wide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings.
* DAVID MCLEOD MARTIN RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1922 - 2018), WINTER GARDEN, EAGLESHAM pastel on paper, signed, titled label verso image size 46cm x 62cm, overall size 72cm x 88cm Mounted, framed and under glass. Handwritten artist's label verso. Note: David sold his paintings through our auctions from time to time and was always kind, courteous and well liked. David McLeod Martin was born in Glasgow in 1922. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1940 to 1942 before serving in India with the Royal Air Force between 1942 and 1946. He returned to Glasgow School of Art in 1946 where he studied under David Donaldson and met his future wife, the painter Isobel Smith. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1948 he pursued a career in teaching. He married Isobel in 1949 and moved to Eaglesham where he lived for the rest of his life. He was elected a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts in 1959 and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1961. Between 1973 and his retirement in 1983, David Martin was Principal Teacher of Art at Hamilton Grammar School. After his retirement from teaching he concentrated full time on his painting. Numerous highly successful solo shows in London were to follow and he continued to enjoy commercial success and critical acclaim both at home and throughout the UK for the rest of his life. David Martin was widely regarded as one of the finest still life and landscape painters of his generation and his work is held in numerous public, corporate and notable private collections including The Arts Council of Scotland, The City of Edinburgh Art Collection, Perth Museum and Art Gallery, The Dick Institute, Kilmarnock, Robert Fleming and Company Ltd, Linklaters and Paine, Lord MacFarlane, The Earl of Moray, Credit Lyonnais Bank, Warburg Asset Management and the Clydesdale Bank. A major retrospective of his work was held at Perth Museum and Art Gallery in 1999.
* ROY HODRIEN (BRITISH b. 1957), STILL LIFE WITH CHERRIES oil on board, signed image size 29.5cm x 24.5cm, overall size 45cm x 40cm Framed. Label verso: E Stacy-Marks Ltd, East Sussex. Note: Born in 1957 on the Wirral, Roy Hodrien studied at the local art college and then went on to further study at Coventry. As a brief foray into advertising, Roy began a freelance career as an animal painter and Illustrator, often producing private animal portrait commissions for owners and breeders. As his reputation grew he began to publish several well regarded books on pedigree dogs, featuring over a hundred of his illustrations. He also established a line in copying orientalist paintings for Middle Eastern clients. During the mid 1980’s Roy began producing his first still life paintings, his passionate interest in the genre led him to study the techniques of the Dutch Masters Willem Kalf and De Heem and the Victorian painters Duffield and Preyer. His adaption of traditional techniques to his unique contemporary style has earned Roy an enthusiastic following amongst collectors of the genre. A regular exhibitor in London, Monaco and the USA, Roy’s work can be found in many private collections throughout the world.

* ALMA WOLFSON DA, STILL LIFE WITH SWEETS oil on board, signed image size 19cm x 21cm, overall size 34cm x 36cm Framed and under glass. Note: Alma Wolfson was born in 1942. Between 1960 and 1964 Alma studied under Robert Stewart at Glasgow School of Art. Alma has exhibited at many solo and mixed British and Scottish art exhibitions. In the process Alma's paintings have won many art awards including: Barclay Lennie Award Glasgow Society of Women Artists 1995; Millers Art Prize Paisley Art Institute 1995; Southern Art Club Trophy 1995 &1998; Alva Purchase Prize SAAC 1998; Save the Children Award 2000. Alma loves painting 'en plein air' in the Scottish country and seaside. She produces compelling paintings in both oil and watercolours. Wolfson's painterly approach is suited and used to great effect when painting Landscape or Seascapes. But she is equally at home producing beautiful Still Life paintings. For the last 30 years she spent time on the tiny island of Easdale on Scotland's west coast. Much of her landscape work has been inspired by this remote part of Argyll where Alma is a familiar sight on the island often seen as a tiny figure sitting wrapped up against the elements in front of a large canvas.
