Rainer Maria Rilke Eigenhändiger Brief mit Unterschrift, in französischer Sprache. Château de Muzot (Wallis), 21. November 1923. 2 Seiten. 18 : 14 cm. Nachdenklicher Brief des reifen und alternden Dichters. Von dem unbekannten Adressaten um sein 'Maxime de vie' gebeten, lehnt Rilke freundlich ab und sieht sich nicht in der Lage, die Motivation seines Handelns und Denkens in eine Formel zu fassen. '.. je crois que c'est toujours ce que nous ne savons pas encore exprimer qui sert de meure à nos actions d'esprit; on peut-être même ce que nous ne saurons jamais mettre en formule. C'est l'ineffable qui dédice de nos mouvements. Une maxime de vie: peut-être se précisera-t-elle sur nos lèvres à l'approche de la mort.' - Schon länger kränklich, begab sich Rilke im Dezember desselben Jahres auf den ersten von mehreren vergeblichen Kuraufenthalten im Sanatorium Valmont. - ZUSTAND: Auf Anfrage. - Autograph letter signed from a mature and ageing Rilke, who, asked for his 'maxim of life', refuses to summarize his motivation for thought and deed in a short formula; even professing himself to be unable to do so, or only at the approach of death. - Only one month later, Rilke was to embark on his first of several spa visits, a futile attempt to cure his leukaemia, which was still undiagnosed at the time. - Slightly foxed, with traces of a rusty paper clip in the margins (partly affecting the writing).
