Scrap Album.- English School (19th century) An Album of drawings, inscribed in pencil 'Album of Gertrude Jekyll' to the front pastedown, with approx. 60 original drawings, one monogrammed 'GJ' and inscribed 'from a photograph', but with many more probably by Gertrude Jekyll's hand, two inscribed 'by Mrs C. Newton', some from nature, others after old masters including Raphael and Dürer, including still lifes, and several portraits including the German lecturer Dr Kinkel, the British explorer Sir Samuel Baker, and others, pen and ink, graphite, chalks, some watercolour, engravings, various sizes neatly pasted onto green-brown album leaves, each leaf approx. 440 x 280 mm. (17 1/4 x 11 in), numerous annotations and inscriptions, many pages torn and cut, some occasional spotting and browning, half calf, very worn, folio, [probably circa 1860-1890]. ⁂ Gertrude Jekyll was an influential British horticulturist, garden designer, artist and writer. The present album appears to be an early collection by Jekyll including works by various artist friends; the album features a number of pen and ink sketches, and still life studies.
