Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Bowdoin- Donald Macmillan" Oil on masonite painting. Signed lower right. Between 1921 and 1954, the schooner Bowdoin made 26 voyages to the Arctic Circle. The first of these voyages began in July 1921 with Donald Macmillan at the helm. The Bowdoin was a research center, and the Carnegie Institution had sponsored her trip to Baffin Island. The objective was to study magnetism and atmospheric electricity. The ship and her crew of seven wintered over near Baffin Island where they were frozen in for 274 days. Throughout the 1920s, the Bowdoin sailed as a research vessel on behalf of the Carnegie Institution, the National Geographic Society, and the U.S. Navy. The Bowdoin's 1930 trip to Iceland was her first voyage carrying inexperienced students. Macmillan found this to be a reliable way to finance his trips north. From 1934 onward, paying students always accompanied him. There was still scientific work being done but it was no longer of as much significance as it once had been. For the students who sailed with Macmillan, the experience was momentous. These young men often said that between the physical challenges they faced and the personal character example of their captain, their future lives were shaped by the summers they spent aboard the Bowdoin. World War II brought changes to the schooner Bowdoin, as she entered service and almost lost her life. Macmillan bought back his schooner after the War and rebuilt her. Upon his retirement, Macmillan sold the Bowdoin to the Mystic Seaport Museum in 1959. Overall Size: 26 x 23.75 in. Unframed.

Italian Communist Party Propaganda Poster, text reads: Ancora Scandali D.C. English Translation: "Another scandolous D.C. Italian federation of farmers' agricultural businesses , social security, tobacco. In the field of moralization the centre-left party has failed too! For the honesty and the justice in public life a new government, a new popular and unitary majority." Three little men similar to dwarfs dressed in red, with red hats and light blue scarves adorned with the Christian Democracy crest. The poster is a parody made by the Italian Communist Party as a critic of the Christian Democracy. The three men similar to dwarfs holding the cutlery ( a fork, a spoon, a knife) are a caricature of a vintage advertising made by "Argenteria Weller" in 1925. In the original advertising three dwarfs hold the cutlery in the same position. The Italian Communist Party in this propaganda poster is accusing the Christian Democracy "to eat" and therefore steal on the shoulders of Italians. The Italian Communist Party (Italian: Partito Comunista Italiano, PCI) was a communist political party in Italy. The PCI was founded as Communist Party of Italy on 21 January 1921 in Livorno by seceding from the Italian Socialist Party (PSI). Amadeo Bordiga and Antonio Gramsci led the split. Outlawed during the Fascist regime, the party played a major role in the Italian resistance movement. It changed its name in 1943 to PCI and became the second largest political party of Italy after World War II, attracting the support of about a third of the vote share during the 1970s. At the time, it was the largest communist party in the West. The Christian Democracy was a Christian democratic political party in Italy. The DC was founded in 1943 (in Nazi-occupied Italy) as the ideal successor of the Italian People's Party, which had the same symbol, a crossed shield (scudo crociato). A Catholic-inspired, centrist, catch-all party comprising both right- and left-leaning political factions, the DC played a dominant role in the politics of Italy for fifty years, from its inception in 1944 until its final demise in 1994 amid the Tangentopoli scandals. The party was nicknamed the White Whale (Balena bianca), due to party's huge organization and to its official color. From 1946 until 1994 the DC was the largest party in Parliament, governing in successive coalitions. It originally supported governments based on liberal-conservative political positions, before moving to centre-left coalitions. The party was succeeded by a string of smaller parties, including the Italian People's Party, the Christian Democratic Centre, the United Christian Democrats, and the still active Union of the Centre. Former Christian Democrats are also spread among other parties, including the centre-right Forza Italia and the centre-left Democratic Party. The DC was a founding member of the European People's Party in 1976. Good condition, folded, minor tears on margins and folds. Country: Italy, year of printing: 1950s?, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 70x100 (Horizontal)
