Dame Ethel Walker, British 1861-1951 - Carnations; oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Ethel Walker', 61.5 x 51.5 cm Provenance: with Alex Reid & Lefevre, London (according to the partial label affixed to the reverse of the frame); private collection Note: this joyful still life composition is highly indicative of Walker's style, with its subtle gradations of chalky paint and quiet atmosphere. A similar work is held in the Tate collection. The artist exhibited widely in the UK during her lifetime, including at Alex, Reid & Lefevre, where this work was originally shown, a number of times from 1931 onwards. She was the subject of a major retrospective at the Tate in 1951, alongside her contemporaries Gwen John and Frances Hodgkins and organised by John Rothenstein. More recently, her work was central to Tate Britain's 'Queer British Art 1861-1967' in 2017.

Russell Sidney Reeve, British 1895-1970 - A Minho Farm, 1937; watercolour and pencil on paper, signed, titled and dated lower right 'Russel Reeve a minho farm 1937', 26.4 x 37.2 cm: together with another watercolour on paper by the same, 'Still life', signed lower right and with artist's label with details of a different work attached to the reverse of the frame, 48.5 x 37 cm (2) Note: numbered on a label attached to the reverse 'RR-F-031441' Reeve studied at the Slade under Philip Wilson Steer and Henry Tonks, who purportedly described him as the best draughtsman at the school since Augustus John. a number of his works are now in public collections, including UCLA Art Museum, the British Museum and the V & A. In 1993, his work was the subject of an exhibition at Ipswich Borough Council Museums and Galleries, which featured an introductory essay by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi.

WILLIAM HUGHES (British, 1842-1901) - a good pair of gilt-framed (later) oil on artist's board still life studies, grapes and pears with a stoneware flagon in countryside surroundings and companion picture detailing grapes, plums and peaches in a wickerwork basket before a stoneware flagon also in countryside surroundings, each signed lower left (each approx. 8.75cm x 11.25cm) with accompanying informational paperwork (2). William Hughes was born in Lanarkshire and well known as a painter of still-life studies of fruit and flowers. He studied under William Hunt and held his first London exhibition in 1862. Between 1862-1888 he exhibited on 161 occasions in London including approx. 30 with the Royal Academy, 8 with the British Institute, 71 in Suffolk Street and numerous with the Grosvenor Gallery.
Twelve pictures and prints to include: Henry Walker (1876-1932): a Hogarth framed and glazed coloured etching 'Landing Fish, Brixham', signed in pencil; a pair of gilt-framed and glazed engravings after George Morland 'Morning or the Benevolent Sportsman' and 'Evening or The Sportsman's Return'; a gilt-framed cud still life by Anne Cotterill; still life floral prints by Adelene Fletcher; watercolour study 'Le Petit Moulin' by Perigueux; two gilt-framed coloured Naval prints after JW Carmichael; a 19th century gilt-framed and glazed (later) hand-coloured map engraving 'Gloucestershire'; a gilt-framed and glazed monochrome engraving 'Hever Castle' (from an original sketch); a small gilt-framed and glazed engraving '1632- Old Houses Evesham'.
