In the late 19th Century Marie Hensley exhibited in many of the London galleries under the name Marie Low, before her marriage to Dr Philip Hensley in 1896. Her passion was for flowers, of any shape or form, and she was known for the delicacy of her brushwork in watercolour. She exhibited two paintings in the Royal Academy in 1896 (1091 of Stocks and 1179 of Japonica), and two further works - both of violets - were exhibited in 1897 and 1902. The latest paintings known were dated to 1908, before her suicide in 1911. This collection of work by Hensley was purchased by our current vendor`s family over 50 years ago from the estate of her `Aunt Bee`.
