In 1919 he wrote 'More and more I take pleasure in the world of things; the perfection of an egg, the plumpness of a tomato, the intricate shapes of a hydrangea give me plenty of problems awaiting a solution. Margaret GARDINER (1904 - 2005)Still Life Interior, c.1967Oil on canvas86 x 110.5cmProvenance with the artist's family.Purchased David Lay Auctions, October 2005. Margaret Gardiner OBE was a writer and political activist as well as an active philanthropic supporter and friend of the artists who had gravitated to St Ives during the WWII period. She was the particular friend of Barbara Hepworth who she met in London in the 1930s and through whom she developed an interest in modernist art. She experimented with painting herself, encouraged by friends such as Roger Hilton. In the 1950s she visited Orkney for the first time but continued to visit regularly. In 1979 she established the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness, to provide a home for her important art collection, donated, and to ‘be held in trust for Orkney’ which is regarded as one of the finest collections of 20th century art in the UK. Patrick Heron described it as “One of the most distinguished and perfect smaller collections of 20th century art on permanent display anywhere in the world". Just one painting of Gardiner’s hangs in the collection at Stromness, and was the gift of Jonathan Grimble and was purchased at David Lay Auctions in 2005. Condition report: On the face of it, this impressive canvas is ready to hang, however, there are condition issues. There is woodworm (believed to be inactive) in the stretchers, down the centre of the work can be seen parallel lines left by the central vertical stretcher. To the right of the painting is a table with objects - here we see a little instability and cracking of paint. The white vase stands on a mat, here there is some cracking and lifting of paint. Overall there is a degree of surface dirt. Please see additional images.
