Bess Harding Not The First, 2022 Oil Paint on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Bess Harding is an artist and illustrator, based in Worthing, West Sussex. Always creative, it took a few years of experimenting with different media to find her niche. She has been painting with oils since 2016, and is most interested in still life, with the odd seascape and landscape, and a more recent foray into semi-abstract work. She seeks to capture a feeling of calm grace and quiet composure no matter what the subject.   Education   Self-taught   Select Exhibitions/Awards   Columbia Threadneedle Art Prize (2018) Society of Women Artists annual exhibition (2019) Royal Society of British Artists annual exhibition (2020) - Dry Red Press Award ING Discerning Eye annual exhibition (2021) Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2022)   Gallery Representation   Carina Haslam Art, Buckinghamshire The Mulberry Tree Gallery, Dorset Nadia Waterfield Fine Art, Hampshire The Art Buyer, Surrey   Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork   Part of an ongoing series of 'Stolen Stems', flowers pilfered from gardens & hedgerows, and taped to a wall to sit for a portrait.   Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. Peter Jones Duckling, 2022 Oil on Paper Signed verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) About   Peter Jones (born 1968, Birmingham, UK) studied fine art at Reading University (1988-1992) and now lives and works in Hackney Wick, London. In 1996 Peter was selected for the Whitechapel Open which marked the beginning of regular exhibitions at galleries in London and outside the UK. Peter held his first solo shows at FRED in London and concurrently at the sister gallery in Leipzig in 2006. The Monkey Paintings series first shown at these two exhibitions confirmed Peter's reputation as an artist and earned him an enthusiastic following. Almost all of the vintage toy subjects of these still-life paintings are collected by the artist for this purpose. Traditionally the monkey in art symbolised the primitive beast within us, and although the paintings by Peter Jones don't deny this inherent quality, they are by turns capricious, playful and vulnerable. The monkey paintings were followed by a group of lamb paintings, dog paintings and an ongoing series of various animal portraits including bunnies and birds. These particular subjects acknowledge and communicate the traditional art historical symbolism of innocence, faithfulness and love. After a hiatus of several years, the monkey series was renewed in 2016, and continues to be the artist's signature subject.   Education   University of Reading 1988-92   Select Exhibitions/Awards   2022, Call Me A Horse, Bark Gallery, Berlin 2021, A Generous Space, Hastings Contemporary 2021, Drawing Biennial, The Drawing Room, London 2020, Hastings Open, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery 2019, ING Discerning Eye, London 2019, Still-Here, Newington Gallery, London 2019, Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy, London 2019, Darlings of the Underground, Subsidiary Projects, London 2019 Drawing Biennial, The Drawing Room, London 2018 Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy, London 2017 Make_Shift, Collyer Bristow Gallery, London 2017 Nature Morte, Guildhall Art Gallery, London (Previously at Four Domes Pavillion, Wroclaw, Poland; Konsthallen-Bohuslans Museum, Sweden; Ha Gamle, Prestegard, Norway.) 2017 Drawing Biennial, The Drawing Room, London 2016 Models and Materialities, Bay Arts, Cardiff 2016 The Small Things Matter, solo show, Clifford Chance Pride Exhibition, London 2015 Drawing Biennial, The Drawing Room, London 2014 Picaresque, Ha Gamle Prestegard, Norway   Gallery Representation   Alveston Fine Arts, Oxmarket Contemporary   Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork   The Winter Auction Duckling is modelled on a very small soft toy which I found in St Leonards-on-Sea on Tuesday 19th July, the day when summer temperature records were smashed across the UK. A few days later when I was back in the sweltering hot studio, I decided that this new addition to my collection of lost and orphaned toys would be the subject for my postcard contribution for this year's Winter Auction. Looking ahead to when the auction would be held, I imagined the Duckling in a cool wintery setting and posed him like a Snowman, as sweat dripped off me as I struggled to finish the tiny painting in the stifling heat of my small studio in Hackney Wick.   Message from Art On A Postcard: Please do not bid if you intend to sell on the artwork. GEORGE GROSZ (1892 - 1959, Berlin) Still life with Fruits and CucumberÖl auf Leinwand auf Karton. (zit. George Grosz, 1974, S. 10).

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII probably marked the zenith of the Evo cult in the UK and this one registered keeper, low mileage FQ-400 is a superb example. This fabulous Evo VIII (Number 57 of 100) is very impressive and certainly one of the best we have ever seen. It was first registered on 1st March 2005 and sold by SGT Mitsubishi in Taplow to its one owner from new and has always been to the same Mitsubishi garage for servicing and maintenance. Our marque-enthusiast vendor explains that the car has been garaged its whole life, is totally rust free and has never had any welding or repairs underneath and, whilst we can’t confirm that, the little Lancer gleams like a new pin and appears virtually showroom fresh. The car is in fantastic condition throughout, the paintwork all appears original, clean and bright, and the interior is again in superb shape with minimal wear even on the drivers-side bolster. It’s fitted with four matching Dunlop Sport Max tyres, (matching tyres are required on this car due to the four-wheel drive system) and all four alloys are 'as new' and have just benefited from a full refurbishment. The car still has the original bung in the exhaust back box. These were actually removed at the dealership at PDI and thrown away, however, the owner requested for this to be replaced as he preferred the car less noisy. In total there are 20 service stamps at Mitsubishi along with a detailed printout of what was done (printout from 2014 as the computer system was updated at that point). The total cost of servicing at Mitsubishi over the years is in excess of £21,000, the cambelt was last done in July 2022 and the car also had a new clutch and flywheel replaced in 2021. The new clutch was from a later Evo 9 as the original FQ-400 clutch is notoriously hard, snatchy and heavy to use.It has also just had a full check over (August 2022), fluid change, diff oils, AYC System, brake fluid and coolant replacement by a local Mitsubishi Specialist. The Alcon front calipers were fully refurbished with new stainless piston by God Speed Brakes and new Alcon pads were also fitted.Number 57/100 is totally original, standard and unmodified with the only exception being a modern Pioneer DAB/Bluetooth head unit. We understand that everything works as it should and the air conditioning is cold. It's supplied with all the normal manuals etc. and the supporting documentation includes the original Bill of Sale, SVA Certificate, V5C, Certificate of Authenticity, both original keys and two remote fobs. This is a seriously quick motor car generating 405bhp from its 2-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and offering 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and 175mph. It's very seldom that we see a performance car of this nature that has covered just over 55,000 miles yet remains in such pristine condition. Remarkable.SpecificationMake: MITSUBISHIModel: EVOYear: 2005Chassis Number: CT9A0303789Registration Number: AU05 TENTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 4963KK5597 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 55415 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black AlcantaraClick here for more details and images

One of the lowest mileage Capris we have ever offered - only 3,617 miles.Towards the end of its life, the Ford Capri enjoyed an upswing in interest as more buyers realised that perhaps a front-wheel hot hatch simply wasn't for them and a V6-engined, rear-wheel drive sporting hatchback might very well do the job. Ford's Special Vehicle Engineering group was entrusted with developing the Capri 2.8 Injection that made its debut at the 1981 Geneva Motor Show. Based at the Research and Engineering centre in Essex, SVE decided to adopt the 2.8-litre V6 with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection - the first regular model since the RS2600 to use fuel injection - plus lowered suspension, thicker anti-roll bars, gas-filled shock absorbers and wide-rim alloy wheels fitted with Goodyear's 205/60VR NCT tyres. The specification also included a 5-speed gearbox, a limited-slip differential (1984 onwards) and ventilated disc brakes for the front wheels. All this translates into a car that goes with 'wonderful eagerness', the Autocar test team enthused after rocketing from 0-60mph in just 7.9 seconds. The Capri 2.8 Injection breathed new life into the range and kept the car in production two to three years longer than Ford had planned. In 1984, the 2.8 injection model was the subject of a substantial upgrade and was known as the Capri Injection Special. This development used Recaro half-leather seats and included a limited-slip differential. Externally the car could easily be distinguished by the 7-spoke RS wheels and its colour-coded grille and headlamp surround. Packed with performance and character, it paved the way for the superb Capri 280.The 1987 model offered here is a truly stunning example displaying only 3,617 miles from new, with just one former keeper. It has formed part of a private collection for most of its days and is accompanied by an extensive history file, including a Letter of Provenance from its former keeper who acquired the car in 2003.Astonishing inside and out, this gleaming Capri is as close as one might find to a new car in a Ford dealership showroom in the 1980s. Incredibly it still retains that intoxicating 'new car smell' of leather and polish and paint, pure nostalgia. As lovely underneath as it is above, we understand that the car has ‘never been out in the rain’ and has been dry stored for its whole life. Nothing about the car suggests otherwise. With low mileage examples of the Capri continuing to set new standards, we look forward to seeing just how well this unrepeatable car performs at auction.SpecificationMake: FORDModel: CAPRIYear: 1987Chassis Number: WF0CXXGAECGA91511Registration Number: E435 DPHTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 3617 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Cloth and LeatherClick here for more details and images

An early, Pre-A Speedster on a set of Rudge knock-off alloys, one of the most collectable Porsches of all time.Porsche’s remarkable 356 put the Zuffenhausen Company firmly on the automotive map in the 1950s, with Dr Ferdinand’s original design - a somewhat basic sports car closely based on Volkswagen’s Beetle - evolving into a technically advanced, beautifully resolved machine over a production life spanning more than 15 years.  The earliest 356s were powered by a Volkswagen-derived flat-four displacing 1068cc and rated at 40hp, but the 1300cc engine became an option from 1951 onwards.  In 1952, the body was refined with a one-piece windscreen (bent in the middle) and revised bumpers, while a new 1488cc engine became available with a roller-bearing crankshaft, twin Solex carburettors and a handy 60bhp on tap.  Other improvements included duplex front brakes, a rear parcel shelf and revised instrumentation (the tacho became standard).  Stronger brakes, full synchromesh gearboxes across the range and a new two-spoke steering wheel appeared in 1953 and two new 1500cc engines were introduced, the 55bhp standard unit and the 70bhp 'Super'.  Sold in Coupé, Cabriolet and Speedster variants, the so-called ‘Pre-A’ 356 is highly prized amongst collectors for its rarity and purity of design. Built at the instigation of Porsche’s North American distributor, Max Hoffman, the original Speedster was a stripped down, open-topped version of the 356 and became very successful in North America as a dual-purpose sports car, proving popular with amateur racing drivers competing in SCCA events.  Porsche built approximately 920 Pre-A Speedsters before adopting the new Type 616/1 and 616/2 engines in October 1955 and a total of 1,234 Pre-A cars were made prior to the official introduction of the 356A in January 1956. The left-hand drive Speedster we have on offer here is an early one, indeed it’s the 347th car produced and the accompanying Kardex card confirms that it was completed on 3rd March 1955 prior to being delivered to Hoffman’s in New York City.Little is known about the car's early history although it has been enjoyed by its current owner for more than 20 years in Monaco. Recently, it's been looked after by award-winning Porsche restorers, Sportwagen in Southend as well as JAZ Porsche and recent attention includes a minor service with the relevant documentation on file.Sitting on a set of the desirable and valuable Rudge knock-off alloy wheels, the 356 is now attractively finished in Dunkelblau with a grey leatherette interior. The original colour was Signal Red according to the Kardex and additionally the Speedster now also boasts a more powerful 1600 cc engine.Overall, this is a car to use and enjoy, it's one for a driving enthusiast. If you’re after a matching numbers, Concours restoration with history from new, then this car is perhaps not for you, however, if you’re in the market for a highly usable example that you could still be proud to own and is priced very competitively, then this cracking little Speedster may well be worth the effort to come and see it in the metal at our NEC sale and investigate a bit further. Thanks in part to its association with glamorous film stars like James Dean and Steve McQueen, the 356 Speedster has always been a very desirable Porsche and any Pre-A version ranks amongst the most collectable Porsches of all, with a cult following that shows no signs of waning.SpecificationMake: PORSCHEModel: 356Year: 1955Chassis Number: 80347Registration Number: 670 UXBTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Left-hand DriveMake: LHDInterior Colour: LeatheretteClick here for more details and images

Lot 649

**SALEROOM NOTICE**It has been recently confirmed that pleasingly the engine is original to the car. The isetta retains its original 600 cc engine, that has been enhanced with 700 spec cylinders and pistons . The engine has not been swapped to a 700cc, as catalogued Rebuilt, personalised and fitted with a BMW 700 engine by Sir Stirling Moss. This is an exciting opportunity to own probably the most famous Isetta on the market today. The Italian-designed Isetta microcar was built under licence in a number of different countries, including Spain, Belgium, France, Brazil, Germany, and here in the United Kingdom. Produced in the post-World War II years, a time when cheap, short-distance transportation was most needed, it became one of the most successful and influential city cars ever created. Because of its egg shape and bubble-like windows, it became known as a "bubble car', a term later used to encompass a wide variety of similar vehicles. With space for two and their luggage, the Isetta was perfect for the UK's urban and rural roads and, in 1957, Isetta GB began producing the 300 model at their factory in Brighton under licence from BMW. The British cars were right-hand drive with the opening front door hinged from the right hand side of the car and the steering column moved across to the right as well. This meant that the driver and engine were on the same side, so a counterweight was added to the left side to compensate. Lucas electrics replaced the German Hella and Bosch components, a different headlamp housing was used and Girling brake components replaced the ATE brake parts. However, with only two seats, the Isetta's market, particularly in Germany, was limited and BMW felt that they needed something larger. Management had already committed to making an entirely new model - the 700 - and resources were limited, so the decision was made to create a lengthened Isetta for the time being until the 700 arrived in 1959. Deriving its name from the BMW R67 motorcycle-sourced 700cc 'boxer' engine, the four-wheel 600 looked just like other Isettas at the front but featured a new perimeter frame and the first ever use of semi-trailing arm suspension on a BMW motorcar. A second row of seats and a right-hand side door added space and usability. The resultant design, with some input from Michelotti apparently, was clean, well-presented, well constructed, and reasonably quick and, with a wheel at each corner, handled well. It was rather expensive, however, costing more than a new Beetle and consequently sold in limited numbers as customers awaited the arrival of the more conventionally-shaped 700 in late 1959.The stunningly presented BMW Isetta on offer here is indeed one of those 600 models and enjoys some remarkable provenance. It was delivered new to Sweden where it spent the first years of its life before arriving in the UK and subsequently being purchased by the late Sir Stirling Moss at a Beaulieu auction. It was in a rather sorry state and Sir Stirling set about a restoration with the help and assistance of his chosen Isetta specialist. Well known for his love of gadgets, innovation and experimentation (the majority of his road cars were tweaked and improved), Stirling decided that the 600 would benefit from a bit more power and, with his legendary charisma, talked BMW into parting with a 700 engine (an enlarged version of the flat-twin used in the R67 motorcycle offering 697cc and over 30bhp)  which was duly slotted in to the little Isetta. There is a letter in the accompanying history file from Stirling to the next owner confirming he asked BMW to help him with the engine. When the rebuild was complete, Stirling used the car around London and his son, Elliot, learned how to drive in this very car as you can see in the accompanying photographs.Subsequently, BGC 408G was sold but it appears that it may have been lightly used and perhaps, poorly stored as, when it was acquired by our vendor around 10 years ago, it wasn't in the best of condition. As recently as ten years ago Sir Stirling Moss was still a household name and our vendor was determined to return this unique Isetta to its sparkling best so, not long after his purchase, he commenced a nut and bolt restoration having stripped the car back to bare metal. Naturally, during the initial restoration, Sir Stirling had specified his choice of exterior colour and trim along with a number of detailed modifications and our vendor was keen to recreate those in order to present the car as it was during Sir Stirling's ownership. The work was done ‘in house’ as the seller enjoys the resources and capability of his race team. The restoration finished in the summer of 2021 and we understand that over £30,000 has been invested over the years which we wouldn't doubt given the sheer quality of the result.Once the restoration was finished, the Isetta was included in the Sir Stirling Moss parade at the 2021 Goodwood Revival as a tribute to the great man and, in 2022, the car featured in an ITV television show called The Car Years in which it was selected to argue the case for the best city car in 1957 against a rival Fiat 500.All told, this is a rare and special car in its own right that’s had an enormous amount of money spent on it in order to get it to its current condition and, combined with the fact it was owned by Sir Stirling Moss OBE, one of the greatest Grand Prix drivers of all time, a world wide sporting personality and undoubtedly a true British icon, this is an exciting opportunity to own probably the most famous Isetta on the market today.SpecificationMake: BMWModel: ISETTAYear: 1957Chassis Number: 126922Registration Number: BGC 408GTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 142873Drive Side: Left-hand DriveMake: LHDInterior Colour: Blue/BlackClick here for more details and images
