Lot 1112

AMELIE OF LEUCHTENBERG: (1812-1873) Empress Consort of Brazil 1829-31 as spouse of Emperor Pedro I. A.L.S., Amelie, three pages, 8vo, n.p., [Paris], 27th March [1833], to her aunt, in French. Amelie tells to her aunt how much she regrets not having been at home when she visited her, and explains that she has been and still is ill and not feeling well. She thanks her correspondent for her continuous support and states `How good you are, sharing always with me our sorrows and our joy! Alas! I am now just living sorrow times and in all ways. My last letters received from Brazil have announced me that my daughter Paula was seriously ill. This has deeply affected me, even more when I can imagine in advance the Emperor´s affliction if we had the misfortune to lose her, because he loves his children with a special tenderness, and the last newsletter leaves me very small hope of seeing this poor child back to life.´ Amelie continues explaining the health problems of Paula and apologizes for sharing all this with her aunt, and concludes this matter with `Therefore I am now living a waiting time full of anxiety, and I fear that the next boat coming from Brazil will just confirm all my fears´. Amelie further refers to Portugal, where her husband the Emperor is, and states `I am also without direct news from Porto and this is due to the storms and winds of the season close to the Portuguese coast.´ With a blind embossed seal at the head. A good content letter. VG £200-300 Amelie would learn shortly after that her adoptive daughter Paula was already dead at the time of this letter. Amelie will move to Portugal few months after to join the Emperor, and as she was announcing on this letter, her sorrows would continue with her husband the Emperor Pedro´s decease the year after.
