A collection of Chinese rice paper drawings, circa 1900 To include four painted with various depictions of birds before rockwork and perched on blossom branches, together with an unusually painted rice paper still life portraying fruits and vases, all similarly framed and glazed, 22cm x 26cm and 22cm x 30cm. A twin handled Coalport china cabinet plate with central hand painted Still Life scene depicting a Plum and Cherries on Berry Strewn Mossy Banking with cobalt blue border with gilt highlights, signed F. H. Chivers, printed mark in green, 5351/R together with four matching cabinet plates decorated with different Still Life scenes of Fruit (22.5cm). CONDITION: Some glaze faults.

PROVENANCE This work comes from the collection of Anne Davis Gillet, who along with her two brothers, John and Philip Davis, inherited them from their mother, the late Marie-Therese Lamoitier Davis. Mrs. Davis and her husband, Allen Clayton Davis, a career member of the US Foreign Service, (and later, U.S. Ambassador, retired) spent two years in the Soviet Union (1966-68). During that time, Mr. Davis was consult and First Secretary of the American Embassy in Moscow, where he became personally acquainted with many of the dissident artists and acquired almost all of these works directly from them personally. When the Davis family was reassigned to Ouagadougou, Upper Volta in late 1968, they brought these works on paper with them out of the Soviet Union, traveling by train.
