A member of the Free Society of Artists, the Farnham maltster Stephen Elmer became the foremost mid 18th century British painter of birds and still life. From 1772 he was a prolific exhibitor of the Royal Academy. Several of his occasional genre pictures, such as The Miser, were engraved.
