L Baurini nineteenth century oil on board - still life study of flowers in two vases, indistinctly signed and dated `92, 50cm x 40cm Undulation to board with cracks appearing at side and crack one inch above bottom extending length of the painting. SMITH (J) [THE] CONFERENCE OF MONSIEUR LE BRUN CHEIF PAINTER TO THE FRENCH KING CHANCELLOR AND DIRECTOR OF THE ACADEMY OF PAINTING AND SCULPTURE - THE PAINTER STEPHEN ELMER`S COPY plates, lower leaves damp stained, pencil studies to rear endpapers, ownership signature S Elmer to title and, in a cartouche, in bistre ink Richard Elmer his Book cost 3s IAN 22 1801, 18th c engraved bookplate of S Elmer of Farnham, contemporary calf, worn, London 1701 Provenance: Stephen Elmer, ARA (1717-1796). A member of the Free Society of Artists, the Farnham maltster Stephen Elmer became the foremost mid 18th century British painter of birds and still life. From 1772 he was a prolific exhibitor of the Royal Academy. Several of his occasional genre pictures, such as The Miser, were engraved.
