Attributed to Heinrich Schweickhardt (German, fl. late 18th century): A George III sand picture of a floral still life with fruit, a birds nest and a Bullfinchthe flowers arranged in an oval basket including lilies, roses, hollyhocks, scabious, lilac and sweet peas, together with a pineapple, plums and grapes, the basket set on a canted plinth beside a melon, peaches and cherries and the nest and standing on top of a elaborate pedestal, the bird seated on a bough before the arrangement, mounted within a Mallett's style glazed gilt wood and gesso frame with green washed inner slip, 74cm high x 58.5cm, the frame, 88.5cm x 73cm approximatelyFootnotes:Although the Bavarian artist Benjamin Zobel (1762-c.1800) is best known for originating and popularising sand art or 'marmotinto' as it was also known in England in the late 18th century, it was his colleague Heinrich Schweickhardt who most probably first introduced the technique to the royal household.Like Zobel, Schweickhart was apparently employed as a 'table decker' at Windsor Castle producing table centrepieces incorporating sand and crushed marble which at that time were the height of court fashion. When Schweickhart retired it was Zobel who took his place and in 1783 he created a particularly elaborate centrepiece running the length of the dinner table for King George III which subsequently collapsed soon after the dinner was over. Regretting the loss of his work, Zobel contrived experiments with various adhesives to bind the sand together and preserve it and in doing so found a glue that could be spread on board so that a permanent two dimensional design could be created. Zobels friendship with the artist George Morland (1763-1804) who was a prominent member of the 'Isle of Wight School' presumably not only influenced the style of Zobel's new two dimensional pictures but also resulted in the use of the islands famous coloured sands which together with patronage from the Duke of York and his previous court connections made Zobel a fashionable and successful artist in this specialist field.Although there are no definitive records of Schweichkharts life or his output, it is possible that he two took to producing two dimension works in sand in the manner of his successor Benjamin Zobel when they became fashionable, this lot possibly being one of them. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. I even prefer it to daylight[...], You should come one day to see how the light picks out every object, how deep, black shadows play around the pictures and are thrown against the beams. You can find it in almost every still life. I painted most of them by night.''PABLO PICASSOThe genre of still life has a prominent position in Picasso's oeuvre, fromhis early Cubist still lifes to the memento mori created during the WarWorld II period and later in the Post War years.Nature morte sous la lampe (Still life under the Lamp) is consideredPicasso's masterpiece of colour linocut and is included in every surveyof 20th Century printmaking. The classic composition of this still life follows the tradition of his greatrole model Cézanne.Picasso uses common objects from anywhere: a glass, apples, alamp, a plain wood table - the object at its most ordinary. As the artistexpressed it: 'I make reference to objects that belong to everybody''.The composition is constructed in nine stages, beginning with a blankwhite background, Picasso cut and printed the single block in eachsuccessive colour, building the image with increasing complexity. Thisgroundbreaking technique was invented by Picasso and is known asthe 'reduction' method. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * AR* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.AR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1964 Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb 'Fintail' SaloonRegistration no. 923 YNYChassis no. 111-041-200S8721Odometer reading: 21,693 milesMOT Expiry: Exempt*Rare UK RHD example*Low mileage*Manual *Sold for restorationMercedes-Benz unveiled the 220SEb at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1959. The SEb featured an elegant design, offering a wider radiator shell, wrap around windscreen, wider rear window, vertically positioned headlamps and discrete tailfins. The high purchase price meant that relatively few were sold in the UK, most with the automatic transmission. This example is still wearing its original Havana Brown paintwork, and is not only right-hand drive, but also a manual. Inside the car retains many original features but will require work. The car is in need of a full restoration inside and out. The engine starts and holds good oil pressure, but will require work to get moving having been in storage for many years. The W111 Fintail is a desirable classic, and this example offers the opportunity to create a new lease of life for the car. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 38/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH.
