Lot 2424

BREGUET; an important and rare silver and gold quarter repeating full hunter pocket watch with lever escapement from the collection of Lord Raglan, circa 1820, the engine turned case engraved with the arms of Lord Raglan, with silver band and pendant, cuvette numbered and hallmarked, quarter repeating pull and plunge button in band at '1', no.3720B, 40, with gilt long lever escapement movement, fine brass escape wheel with oil retention holes, bimetallic compensation balance, with compensation screws, sprung balance jewel for pivot protection, polished hammer striking on a single coiled gong and with silvered dial set with black Roman numerals to outer minute divisions, gilt Breguet moon hands, and offset subsidiary seconds dial between 5 and 6, diameter 51mm, approx 106g.Sold to Crosbie 15th May 1823 for 4,700 francs. This watch was included in the Lord Raglan Collection and was the property of The Marquees of Londonderry. Originally when this was bought it was already a very expensive watch indicating that it included many of Breguet's innovations for watches - one of the rarest and most remarkable is the use of the straight line lever escapement which was an adaption of the lateral lever escapement used by the English and by Breguet himself in earlier watches. This version was in time adopted by horology as a whole and forms the base of most modern mechanical watches today; rarer still is the use of oil retention holes in the teeth of the escape wheel. Breguet flirted with ideas for extending the life of the oil by placing a conical reservoir for the oil leading on each tooth - however, as it was expensive and not very effective, it did not become a regular feature in his watches.Purchased Messrs. Bonhams 21st June 2017.Additional InformationLight surface scratches and a tiny dent to the case, no mention of working order is given on any watches. Some toning and tarnishing to the silvered dial.

Absolutely sparkling, 3-litre Targa from the first year of 'Super Carrera' productionFinished in Petrol Blue Metallic with a black leatherette/black and white 'pin-stripe ' velour interiorFive-speed manual box, ATS alloys, Leather Wheel, Centre Console and Electric WindowsComprehensive history from new with Autofarm, Francis Tuthill, and Porsche Centre BrooklandsCurrent mileage is 23,980. Major Porsche Service with fresh fluids on 27/01/2020 at 23,979 miles (one mile ago)Detailed Ownership History, every MOT, Porsche C of A, fully stamped Service Records in the original pouch, an original 1978 Sales Brochure, the current V5C and an MOT valid until 21/08/2020In simply remarkable condition, totally unmolested and one of the best original cars we have ever seenIn 1978, Porsche introduced their latest development of the 911, christened the '911 SC', with the SC standing for Super Carrera. Powered by a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a five-speed, 915 transmission, power output initially was 180bhp, subsequently 188bhp and finally, in 1981, it was increased to a heady 204bhp. 1979 was the year that Porsche had envisioned that their new 928 would replace the 911 (we are still waiting for that to happen), however, 911 sales remained so strong that Porsche revised its strategy and decided to inject new life into their core model. According to its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this stunning Targa was built in September 1977 for the 1978 Model Year and was finished in Petrol Blue Metallic (only available '78-80) with a Black Leatherette interior enhanced by black and white 'pin-stripe ' velours. It 's fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox, the standard ATS alloys, which look particularly good on the Targa, and optioned from new with Impact Absorbers, Headlamp Washers, Leather Steering Wheel, Coloured Windows, a Centre Console and Electric Windows. Finding a 1970s Porsche with a comprehensive history is fairly rare and, apart from an intriguing nine years, this lovely original car has just that. Initially ordered from AFN Guildford by Peter Cresswell, senior partner in the law firm, Bradstock Plunkett, the Porsche was first registered as WLY 185S on 25/11/1977. It had covered just over 3,000 miles when it was sadly stolen from Chelsea whilst the Cresswell family were abroad on holiday. No trace was subsequently found and the insurance company naturally replaced it with a similar model. Some nine years later, shortly after this second car was replaced with his third new Porsche, Peter Cresswell received an unexpected phone call from Worthing Police telling him that 'his ' Porsche had been left blocking someone 's drive and when it was reported, it popped up as 'stolen '. It had covered less than 1,000 miles in the previous nine years and remained in very good condition. It still bore the original registration suggesting that it hadn 't been stolen to sell on to the Continent or to have its identity changed and we can only conclude that whoever stole it loved it so much that they simply had to have it. It was presumably kept in a lock-up and brought out on high-days and holidays to be driven around on its original plates. Brave. It's important to note that at no point have HPI ever listed the car as 'Stolen and Recovered' and pleasingly, the car does not seem to have been recorded anywhere in this connection. Anyway, in mid-March 1987, having negotiated a figure of £11,000 with Royal Insurance, WLY 185S formally became the property of Peter Cresswell, as it was to remain until 2005. The car was used lightly over the next few years and having covered only a few thousand miles required little in the way of maintenance apart from a new heat exchanger and full service in May 1997 at 8,589 miles, however, in May 1999 the car was sent to Autofarm at 9,076 miles for a general assessment. Several head studs were found to be broken and one thing lead to another resulting in Autofarm rebuilding the complete top end with replacements barrels and heads, new pistons and rings, and associated components. From the look of the invoices on file, Autofarm carried out further mechanical attention and the invoices (all on file) from the May-September period amount to around £7,500. The Porsche was based near Banbury so it was natural that Autofarm in Weston-on-the Green continued to look after and service it which they did until its sale to Mike Gabb on 20/10/2005 with a mileage of just over 11,000. Mike and Sally Gabb enjoyed the little Porsche for almost eight years covering a total of just over 11,000 miles, with service invoices from Auto 2000 and Francis Tuthill, before selling it to Neal Gordon on 21/08/2013. Neal applied the cherished registration '2 UPK ' to the Porsche, moved it to his slot in the underground NCP car park in Cadogan Gardens and covered a total of only 1,800 miles in the following three years with the longest single trip being a 145-mile journey to Norfolk. Towards the end of his ownership Neal treated the car to four new brake calipers with pads, four correct-spec BOGE shock absorbers, greased, adjusted, renewed parts of the clutch and throttle linkages, set the wheel alignment and filled the gearbox with 'very expensive oil'. This work was carried out by Porsche Brooklands on 16/08/2016 at a mileage of 23,754. In December 2016, at an indicated mileage of 23,973, the Porsche was purchased by Graham Dacre CBE and added to his Norfolk-based collection where it was to remain until recently purchased by our vendor. The current indicated mileage is 23,980 and there is an invoice on file from Porsche Cardiff detailing a Major Service with fresh fluids on 27/01/2020 at 23,979 miles (one mile ago). With the exception of the missing nine years when the Porsche was stolen, the service history is comprehensive, however, it only covered 1,000 miles whilst in hiding and, as it was returned unmolested our 't-leaf ' presumably loved the car, so the lack of history is not an issue. The owner 's file is impressive with a detailed Ownership History, every MOT back to 1989 individually sleeved, a summarised MOT History, older V5Cs, a significant number of detailed invoices/worksheets from Autofarm, Francis Tuthill, and Porsche Centres Brooklands and Cardiff, a Porsche C of A, fully stamped Service Records in the original pouch, an original 1978 Sales Brochure, the current V5C and an MOT valid until 21/08/2020. Patently well cared for throughout its life, even by the bloke who stole it, this Targa remains in remarkable condition. It presents really well in a delightful shade of Petrol Blue, the paintwork retains a deep shine, the shut lines are factory standard, the brushed stainless-steel roll hoop appears unmarked and the ATS alloys look sharp. Similarly, the interior looks virtually showroom fresh with very little signs of wear and the black and white pin-stripe seats are quintessentially eighties but 'eighties boardroom' as opposed to 'eighties night-club'. With a warranted mileage of less than 24,000, a comprehensive history and looking a 'million dollars', this 1978 3-litre SC Targa is worthy of a place in any collection of classic Porsches. Launched to compete with the Lamborghini Muira and upgraded to compete with its successor, the Countach, the 'BB' was the first production Ferrari to be fitted with the boxer-type 12-cylinder engine derived from the Formula 1 unit of the period. The architecture was not that of the classic front-engined and rather upright, V12 Ferraris of old and it could be argued that the BB was the first 'proper' mid-engined Ferrari. The Boxer's moniker was derived from the fact that the cylinder banks form an angle of 180°, resulting in an engine with a flat, rectangular shape which enabled the car's centre of gravity to be lowered. The horizontally opposed pistons were said to resemble a pair of boxers alternating punches and the 'Boxer' nickname was to stick for this engine layout, even when used by other manufacturers. This low centre of gravity enabled the designers to pen the assertive stance that was to be typical of all future Ferraris. The BBi was the final evolution of the Boxer and was launched at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1981. The styling was left largely unaltered, but the car now featured an advanced, and far more reliable, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system offering 360bhp at 6,200 rpm, 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds and 179mph. Maranello's investment in mid-engine engineering ensured the BB's stylistic DNA was to be around until production of the Ferrari 328 ended in 1989, some 18 years since the launch of the original Boxer, the 365 BB. In the UK, just 42 right-hand drive versions of the BBi were ever imported making this model a very rare, desirable and collectable car. This, best of breed, UK right-hand drive 512 BBi is one of those 42 cars and was supplied new by Colmore Depot of Birmingham on 16th June 1982 finished in the classic colour combination of Rosso with Tan leather. It has the distinction of being one family-owned from new as the original owner is our vendor's father who has himself owned several significant Ferrari milestone cars over the years, including a Daytona, 308 GTS, 328 GTS and a 355 GTS which he still drives regularly at the age of 84! Passing the car to his son in 1998, it has since been enjoyed on a number of UK and European tours over the years, whilst being professionally maintained by a mix of Ferrari main agents and respected specialists. The comprehensive history file includes all relevant service invoices and documentation from new, as well as details of a substantial restoration which took place in 1997. This included a full-body repaint and an engine-out service with a 512TR single plate clutch conversion ~giving a lighter feel to the clutch and a much-enhanced driving experience. Today, the car has covered just 20,964 enjoyable and incident-free miles, making this one of the lowest mileage examples available and, looking at the photographs, it's clear to see that this is a very original car that's been cherished from new, well maintained and properly stored throughout its life. This is the first time that the family have ever offered the car for sale and, as such, it represents a very special opportunity for the discerning Ferrari enthusiast. Recently developed by Classic Heroes into 'Competition spec'Emphasis on turn-key usability, quick on track whilst comfortably driveable on the road2.5-litre competition engine. Circa 260bhp at the flywheel. Short-shift gear changeSports suspension, AP front discs and calipers. 17" split-rim wheels. Presented in 'works livery'Recently prepared and run by Dansport for Jay at the Rally Isla Mallorca The E30 M3 requires no introduction to the motoring enthusiast. It has the finest competition history of any tin-top racer and will go down in the record books as the single model to have won more international races, rallies and hill climb championships than any other car. Driven by legends such as Stuck, Cecotto, Ravaglia, Soper, Pirro, and Quester to name but a few. The road version has gone down in the history books as the most flattering saloon car chassis of all time.Offered straight from the amazing stable of rock legend and Jamiroquai frontman, Jay Kay, this car started life as an original road-going M3. More recently Classic Heroes were commissioned to develop this fabulous example into a competition car. The emphasis during this build was on turn-key usability and for it to remain comfortably drivable on the road as it was, naturally, essential to be quick and safe on track and occasionally driven long distances to a circuit. The owner wanted to use the car at events all over Europe and it had to fit in with his busy lifestyle with no dependency on tow bars and trailers! This M3 was originally supplied to Germany in 1987. The original engine is now a 2.5-litre competition unit with a balanced and lightened crank, rods, modified cylinder head, camshafts and converted to valve shim under the bucket. Running with a carbon airbox and programmable ECU, it now gives 260 bhp at the flywheel and also features a short shift gear-change, as well as an internal oil pressure gauge and Lambda gauge. Additionally, the car has sports suspension, competition rear shock top-mounts, negative camber front top-mounts, a front strut-brace, a rear strut-brace, poly-bushed suspension joints and a competition-ratio steering rack. AP competition front brake discs and callipers are fitted with competition rear brake pads and front brake ducting along with braided brake lines. The car sits on 17" BBS split-rims with wheel spacers and Toyo Proxes R888 R tyres. Finally, Recaro front seats with Schroth 6-point harnesses sit inside a 6-point, bolt-in Safety Devices roll cage with padding. The steering wheel is a Momo removable version with a Motorsport footrest and a competition fire extinguisher. Its looks are enhanced by carbon mirrors, a carbon Sport Evo rear spoiler and an Evo 2 front chin spoiler and it's presented in a works livery that can easily be removed if a more subtle track appearance is required. In January 2020, the car was entrusted to International Rally Engineers, Dansport of Chesterfield to be prepared for Jay to drive in Rally Isla Mallorca in March. Whilst in Dansport's care, they fitted a front lightbox and a Monit trip meter. Running as "Car Zero" at the front of the Legends rally, both car and driver were very competitive as can be seen in the video below this description. The car finished the event competitively and without incident and is presented today as it finished ~ turn-key and ready to be used again in sprints, hill climbs, stage rallies, or as a perfect track day car that can be driven to any event, yet still be competitive. And that sound...nothing comes close! Click here for more information This car was consigned by Nick Whale. Home market, right-hand drive Elan Sprint Coupe, indicating just 52,710 miles (atoc) Beautifully presented in the desirable Sprint livery of Pistachio over Cirrus White Replacement chassis in 1997 then subject to an extensive restoration between 2001 - 2003 Offered with a large history folder documenting the life of this remarkable example A fabulous little Lotus. Elan by name and Elan by nature The desirable 'Sprint' model was introduced in 1971 and was the ultimate incarnation of Lotus'revolutionary little Elan. It justified its name thanks to a substantial increase in power to 126bhp resulting from the adoption of a big-valve head with high-lift cams, a raised compression ratio and (initially) Weber 40 DCOE 31s. The drivetrain was suitably toughened and braced and the front callipers were redesigned to cope with the increased performance. This home-market Sprint Coupé was first registered in the height of summer 1972 and is particularly striking in the attractive period 'Sprint' livery of Pistachio Green over Cirrus White. 48 years later this example presents superbly and could almost be described as being in showroom condition. We are advised that it was fitted with a new chassis in circa 1997 and that between 2001-2003 the car was subject to extensive restoration. The latter involved a complete strip-down and re-spray, an engine rebuild (believed to have been completed by marque specialist 'Nick Stagg Engineering'), conversion to unleaded compatibility, an overhaul of the steering, suspension and brakes, a new interior, and the fitting of a host of other new parts. A fascinating history file accompanies the little coupé and includes a record of all journeys from 1979 at 23,377 miles through to December 1985 at 47,133 miles, showing just how cherished this car has been. In the years that followed, it appears that the car was only lightly used after being restored, as by 2007 the mileage indicated was still just 48,000 (approximately) and to date is only 52,525. There is an invoice for a recent service at 52,498 miles, MOT Certificates from 2006 to 2018, plus numerous invoices for work/maintenance/parts (from 2002 up to 2018, totalling almost £15,000) from specialists Christopher Neil Lotus, Paul Matty Sports Cars, and QED Motorsport Ltd. Furthermore, there are specific invoices from 2008 that indicate further restoration, plus £3,131 spent with Paul Matty in 2012 for various maintenance items. There is no doubt that NHN 620K has received more than its share of care and attention and continues to look sharp and fresh. We understand that it's as agile and eager as a 'Sprint' should be and imagine that Mr Chapman, whose signature is etched into the steering wheel, would be proud that his inspired creation is as desirable now as the day it rolled out of Hethel all those years ago. Lovely, left-hand drive US-market car imported to the UK in 2009 Comprehensive restoration some years ago in the States and still stunning to this day Superbly finished in White over Velvet Green with a classic Westfalia interior Desirable 'Pop Top' with a 'Rock n' Roll' bed and front seat hammock! Complete with additional awning, electric hook up and USB connect Recent full mechanical overhaul and fresh MOT by 'Type-2 Detectives' Good history file including details from the USA and UK Starting in 1951, Volkswagen offered an officially sanctioned camper conversion for its Type 2 by Westfalia-Werke of Franz Knobel & Sohne in Rheda-Wiedenbruck, Germany. Interiors were panelled in birch plywood and standard equipment included screened jalousie windows, a laminated folding table, storage cabinets, an icebox and electrical hookups. Some models included a sink and pressure water system. A number of fold-out seat arrangements provided sleeping accommodation and optional equipment included a pop-up roof section, awnings and side tents, a chemical toilet, camping equipment, a small map table and even a child's crib in the driver's cab. This, comprehensively restored 1969 VW Westfalia Camper is finished in Velvet Green and White - a 'classic' colour combination evoking memories of years gone by. It was a US resident from new in 1969 until arriving on these shores in 2009 and just prior to import, was the subject of a comprehensive restoration, including bodywork, interior and engine and remains in stunning condition throughout to this day. In 2016, the present owner decided that the mechanical aspects of the camper could do with a refresh and with that in mind presented his pride and joy to the well-respected 'Type 2 Detectives' in Cambridge to work their magic. They carried out a complete mechanical overhaul, including an engine check and tune, full gearbox rebuild, brake overhaul, Bilstein shocks, replacement fuel lines and a complete underbody Waxoyl. Business commitments mean that the vehicle has only been used lightly recently but despite that, it has been regularly serviced and has just passed its MOT with flying colours. All accoutrements are in full working order including the fitted leisure battery, 16A coupler, USB connection and three-pin sockets. The passenger seat also has the addition of a heating element for the partner with a bad back ! Complete with 'pop-top' roof with double bed, rock-n-roll bed and even a front seat hammock! Also included is a desirable camping awning and solar charging panels to make life on the road that little bit easier. Within the history file there are some details of later work in the States from 2003 to 2009, when it arrived here, but no real documentation prior to that. Since arriving in the UK, there is a complete annual MOT trace with its most recent carried out on 27/03/2020 at 54,931 miles and service records covering 2009 to the present day. This genuine, early bay-window bus is in fabulous condition and strikes the perfect balance between 1960's camper-van cool, VW- enthusiast credibility and real-life modern drivability. It's fast enough but not too loud, long-legged and easy to drive, comfortable with good ride quality, and is ready-made fun for all the family. Lot 250

A unique and important collection of WWII Second World War RAF Royal Air Force memorabilia from a 188297 Flying Officer Jack Shelley of 120 Squadron. The effects comprising; Shelley's original named Type C leather flying helmet (named to interior ' F/O J. Shelley - 120 Squadron - RAF ') and a wealth of personal photographs, letters and correspondence to his sweetheart (and later wife, Gladys Wright of Macclesfield). The helmet of leather construction and generally in good used condition - leather straps present, and in good order. The letters - spanning well over one hundred - include lots of fascinating content both regards his actions during the period, but also charming and heartfelt content to his sweetheart. Shelley appears to have started off his military career in the British Army (Middlesex Regiment) before transferring to the RAF. It appears that at some point Shelley was injured in an aeroplane crash and suffered some scarring / injury to his head and face. Many of the later letters make remarks to such. He also appears to have been stationed in Canada, Italy, India and the USA at several points, with letters addressed as such. His many letters to his sweetheart are full of sentiment and have the most incredible outpouring of love. The letters are a perfect representation of young love - with Shelley even proposing to Gladys via Airgraph, and the couple appear to get married during a brief period of leave sometime during 1944.  Some extracts from letters of note, include; - a letter dated 12-11-1945 from Jack at RAF Waterbeach, Cambridge - an unusual tone for a service airman in which he goes on to say; 'You know I'm fed up to the teeth with this life in the RAF - and I shall be glad when I get back to my old job again....as far as I'm concerned this Air Force is a dead end and a sheer waste of very valuable time...(they're) arranging for me to see another nerve specialist and you can rest assured that I've made up my mind I'm not going to fly again.'- an Airgraph dated 10th Feb 1944 - '...you needn't worry about the scars on my face because they aren't so bad when you get used to them. They are not very plain and I'm not the least bit disfigured.'- an Airgraph dated 18th March 1944 which contains Shelley's proposal to Gladys '...I'll probably be with you 18 months from now - let us hope so. Anyway.... what do you say to us getting married when I get home on my first leave - personally, I'm all for it!'- a three page letter on blue paper dated June 29th 1942, with Shelley noting himself as 656047 Sgt J Shelley stationed in Canada. The letter contains some lovely content regards him being in love with Gladys and his hopes and dreams for their future together. - an Airgraph dated 22nd May 1944 '...(I) pray that it won't be long before we're back together again...shall we go away again for a day or two and just make whoopie in the old home town?'- an Airgraph dated 1st March 1944 '...I don't think I told you about Freddie Bloss - he used to work in May & Wains the lawyers...anyhow he used to be on this Squadron but he's been missing for quite a while now; you might tell Adrian if you see him around. '- a letter dated 2nd Nov 1941 (during Shelley's training in Moose Jaw, Canada) '...I..don't do anything more than fly in aeroplanes, work reasonably hard and occasionally go to the pictures...I still keep building up my flying time, I've got well over 100 hours in now, both day and night. Night flying is rather awkward here because there are so many large changes in the wind direction. It is perhaps as well because it teaches us to take nothing for granted and always to keep our wits about us.'- an Airgraph dated 26th Sep 1943 in which Shelley describes his accident '...I suppose you know by now that I was involved in an aircraft accident - fortunately however I'm not seriously injured and although I'm in hospital at the moment I hope to be out in a few days. I lost all my kit in the crack-up (it was a fire) including the presents I had bought for you....however I managed to save my neck even though I hit the ground with an awful wallop - I only got two cuts on my face, nothing else anywhere.' - a letter dated 1st March 1941 - Shelley notes himself as 4128817 Private J. Shelley or B.Company, Middlesex Regiment- The collection also includes several personal photographs of both Shelley and pals / family members, Squadron photographs (including one of No.3 Flight No.3 Squadron, June 1941) as well as Shelley's RAF uniform patch and epaulettes. A fascinating and important collection of WWII RAF effects, the letters in particular contain some of the most heartfelt sentiment we have ever had the pleasure of reading. About 120 Squadron; Reformed as part of Coastal Command in Northern Ireland in 1941 at RAF Nutts Corner, the unit was equipped with the Consolidated Liberator, flying against the U-boat threat in the war in the North Atlantic. The squadron received the first Mark I Liberators in June and began flying nine of them in September from bases in Aldergrove, Northern Ireland and Reykjavik, Iceland. The number of Liberators in September 1942 had increased to six Mark I, two Mark II, and three Mark III. No. 120 Squadron remained the only Coastal Command squadron flying VLR (Very Long Range) Liberators in February 1943 with five Mark I and twelve Mark III. The squadron was very successful in this role, sinking 14 U-boats outright; and was credited with a share in sinking three more, plus eight damaged. This was the highest kill total in Coastal Command, achieved while flying from Northern Ireland, Iceland, and in support of Operation Overlord – the Allied invasion of France in 1944.
