ALICE MACALLAN SWAN, A.R.W.S. (1864-1939): "Ranunculus" (1911). Watercolour. Signed lower right "A. MACALLAN SWAN 1911). Younger sister of the animal painter and sculptor John Macallan Swan (1847-1910). Little known in her own right she is now being rediscovered with one of her watercolours selling for £15k at Christie's in 2020. Much of her work is still-life and flower pictures, which she exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1882 and 1898. This work dates from 1911. In 1923 she was commissioned to paint a watercolour of St. Paul's from Waterloo Bridge for Queen Mary's Dolls House (Royal Collection RCIN 927413). Image size 50cm x 43.5cm

The frames shows some losses to the moulding in places.Crazing or ‘craquelure’ to the painted surface on both.
