Cricket Interest - A white-metal mounted scroll case of cylindrical form, engraved on the metal: 'Presented to H.E. Sir Francis Stanley Jackson/Governor of Bengal/The Dacca District Board'; each end with a domed cover and crown finial, about 40 cm long, circa 1927-1932; together with a mottled green glass, or other, box and cover, 5.5 cm diameter. Both contained in a rectangular wood box (3). Sir Francis Stanley Jackson, GCSI, GCIE, KStJ (1870-1947) was Governor of Bengal, 1927-1932, but perhaps is better remembered for his exceptional Cricketing career with Cambridge University, Yorkshire and England. He took part in The Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, 1899 together with a number of the games' most famous players, including W.G. Grace, K.S. Ranjitsinhji, C.B..Fry, Tom Hayward, George Hirst and Wilfred Rhodes. Interestingly, this was not Jackson's best Test Match; he scored 8 in the the First Innings and a Duck in the Second.Jackson rose to Test prominence, scoring 91 in his first Test Match Innings against Australia in 1893 and maintained this form until his penultimate Test Innings at The Oval in 1905 when he scored 76. In 20 Tests, he scored 1415 runs with an impressive average of 48.79, also taking 24 wickets at 33.29. He was both President of The MCC, and President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.Jackson survived an attempt on his life in 1932 by Bina Dias, a West Bengal Nationalist who was later to become a member of the Bengal Provincial Legislative Assembly. He died in London on 9th March, 1947 whilst still in the post of President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Jackson was featured on a number of cigarette cards, including those offered with Capstan, Wills and Ogden's Cigarettes, winning the Ashes in 1905 against an Australian Team with Joe Darling, Syd Gregory, Victor Trumper, Clem Hill and Warwick Armstrong. A feat for which Jackson may be justifiably remembered. Please note that there are some areas of wear, deterioration or damage to this lot.
