A rare 3-door version of Ford's capable 4-wheel drive sports saloon from the eighties.Offered as Ford’s answer to the total traction trend in the mid-eighties at the 1985 Geneva Motor ShowCologne 2.8 V6-engine producing 162bhp with a superb V6 soundtrack Rugged Ferguson four-wheel-drive transmissionStaggering all-weather grip, a balanced chassis and speed to rival the trend-setting QuattroOnly 35,010km by its one French owner complete with a UK NOVADashing three-door styling shared by its Cosworth sibling and presenting in great overall conditionFord's all-wheel drive family hatch was developed to extend the usability of its household name with a brace of driven axles and a tough, naturally-aspirated V6. So popular did the concept prove in its day that the XR4x4 superseded the rear-wheel drive XR4i that came before it. It seemed British buyers of the eighties were becoming enthusiastic by the notion of added traction. You can understand why, given that back in 1985, when the XR4x4 was first shown with its twin viscous differential-equipped driveline at the Geneva motor show, the four-wheel drive segment was comparatively tiny. The XR4x4 promised familiar hatch usability with added year-round dependability in a familiar package. It was unique. The car packed a punch, too, Ford's 2.8-litre Cologne V6 providing the early three-door with 162hp at 5,700rpm, meaning the Sierra XR4x4 could hit 60mph in 8.5 seconds - ranking it alongside some of the era's most interesting hatchbacks, including the much smaller 1.6 Peugeot 205 GTI. Obviously Ford's ambition for the Sierra was different, but its rear-bias, all-wheel drive system meant there was still fun to be had in the 1,262kg machine.Obviously smitten when the Sierra 2.8i, 4X4 was launched at the Geneva Motor Show the cars French first owner went and bought one and kept it all his life until purchased by our vendor and imported to the UK recently. The early cars utilised the 3-door Sierra Cosworth bodyshell and were primarily left-hand drive. He only covered some 35,010km (22,000miles) in the car over the 35-years of his ownership Since its arrival in the UK, it’s been subject to a full mechanical health check that included a complete replacement of the fuel system with a new tank, fuel filters and pump. The cooling system was totally gone through with a new radiator and hoses. It had a full service including oil and filter, spark plugs, HT leads, distributor and rotor arm and was treated to new wiper blades, fuses, battery and bulbs.Low mileage, dashing three-door styling shared by its Cosworth sibling and presenting in great overall condition. SpecificationMake: FORDModel: SIERRA 2.8I 4X4Year: 1985Chassis Number: WFOEXXGBBEFM36260Registration Number: 5659RT61Drive Side: Left-hand DriveClick here for more details and images

Lot 332

A lovely example of the feline AC Ace, superbly returned to life by one of the UK's most talented engineers. An original, home market, 1955 Ace finished in the rare factory colour of Pacific Green with a Black leather interior and registered on the 13th April in Surrey as WPL 750The original AC two-litre engine was replaced with the highly desirable Bristol D2 in the early sixtiesPurchased by John Gardiner of Crosthwaite and Gardiner in 1966A full restoration eventually commenced in 2005 resulting in one of the finest mechanically and bodily restored Aces in existenceComplete with a provenance file containing the 'buff' logbook, photos of the restoration, some recent invoices and an MOT valid until June 2022.The AC Ace first appeared at Earls Court in 1953 and epitomised a new era of British post-war sports car production. The owners of AC, Charles and Derek Hurlock, along with AC agent, Ken Rudd, transformed the company's reputation by taking a racing special and putting it into production, with notable stylistic influences from Italian sports cars of the era. The result was a car that delivered both on the road, and particularly on the track thanks to the input of racing chassis designer John Tojeiro. Tojeiro employed the same simple tubular ladder-type chassis with an aluminium body that he had used in his earlier specials, however, the Ace differed by being fitted with all-round independent suspension by transverse springs (the first British sports car to do so), ensuring superb handling with minimal body roll and plenty of feedback. Such was the success of the Ace chassis, it became the foundation for the mighty Shelby Cobras with over three times the power of the original 105bhp, Weller designed, six-cylinder engine. The outdated AC unit eventually made way for the more refined Bristol straight-six, which had evolved from the pre-war BMW 328. The Bristol engine was far more suited to racing, as demonstrated with some success by Cooper, and in its standard form developed 128bhp at 6000rpm. Consequently, it is the Bristol-engined Ace that is most sought after by collectors. The Ace Bristol enjoyed significant competition success being campaigned by enthusiastic club racers, private owners and most famously by the Ken Rudd team at Le Mans in 1957 and 1958. Bristol-engined Aces were run successfully at Le Mans from 1957 to 1962 by various entrants, however, it was on a domestic club level where Ace Bristols earned their reputation as superb racing machines. In total, only 466 Ace Bristols were manufactured and they are justifiably hot property amongst collectors as very few examples become available on the open market. The AC Ace was a truly innovative piece of design and represents the foundation from which the legendary Cobra was developed.John Gardiner, the legendary toolmaker and restoration engineer, joined Dick Crosthwaite in the sixties to form a partnership, Crosthwaite and Gardiner, that was eventually to become established as world-class providers of engineering and manufacturing services to the historic motor racing community. Their reputation has grown with all marques including Bugatti, Maserati and Jaguar and restorations on many of the most famous historic racing cars in the world. It's no surprise then, that with a demanding growing business, John Gardiner took nearly forty years to commence a personal project and embark on the restoration of an AC Ace that he had purchased in 1966. The AC in question was an original, home market, 1955 Ace finished in the rare factory colour of Pacific Green with a Black leather interior and registered on the 13th April in Surrey as WPL 750, a registration number it still retains to this day. The 'buff' log book notes that the original AC two-litre engine was replaced with the highly desirable Bristol D2 in the early sixties, prior to John's purchase. It was not until circa 2005 that John felt he had enough time to devote to the project and he embarked on a full nut and bolt restoration aided by the substantial resources of his company and his own (perfectionist) engineering skills. Those skills and attention to detail are evident in the result and anybody who spends time in the presence of this wonderful motor car will appreciate John's dedication and standards. The result is one of the finest mechanically and bodily restored Aces in existence and it's no surprise that it drives beautifully and is perfectly balanced on the road.Sadly, John passed away not long after the car was finished and it was registered to his wife who now feels that the time is right for someone else to enjoy her late husband's 'pride and joy'.It come complete with a provenance file containing the 'buff' logbook, photos of the restoration at Crosthwaite and Gardiner, some recent invoices and an MOT valid until June 2022.When Carroll Shelby stood on the winners rostrum at Le Mans in 1959 deep in conversation with AC Ace Class Winners Ted Whiteaway and John Turner he obviously had a vision ... as they say - the rest is history. The Ace Bristol is a car that rightfully deserves its place in the history books as 'grandfather' to the legendary AC Cobra, and this lovely classic offers the opportunity to enjoy that history whenever you fancy as well as, perhaps, quietly appreciating the skill and craftsmanship that led Dick Crosthwaite and John Gardiner to contribute to the survival of some of the world's most significant classic cars. A rare, UK-supplied, right-hand drive example of Porsche's legendary 356C.A rare UK-supplied, right-hand drive example of the legendary 356CBuilt on the 20th of January 1965 and UK-registered on the 1st of April 1965Originally finished in Bali Blue with black leather and registered to AFN Ltd. as a demonstratorOptioned from new with an OAT gauge, oil pressure gauge, St Christopher medallion, radio and speakers, lap seat-belts, Hella fog lights and headrestsThe second owner was a Mr H J Garland who owned the car right through until 2019, using it frequently up until 1980 when it was dry storedEngine sent to Germany for a rebuild at this time. Only around 400 miles sinceRepainted Orange and then latterly treated to a coat of Ford Anchor BluePurchased by our vendor in 2019 and gently recommissioned; fuel system, brakes, electrics, ignition and all fluids Supplied with a Porsche CoA and the original number plate will remain on the vehicleWidely acknowledged as Porsche's first venture into motor manufacturing, the 356 was a lightweight and nimble rear engined, rear-wheel-drive, two-door sporting car available in hardtop coupé and open configurations. Over a 15-year production period, the 356 evolved from an aluminium bodied coupé with an 1100cc air-cooled flat-four engine, to a proper sports car with a 2,000cc four-cam Carrera engine producing 130 bhp.At first glance, the 356C, introduced in mid-1963, differed little from the prior 356B since it continued to use the T-6 body type which had arrived in 1962. Porsche, however, brought the 356 concept to its zenith with the 356C, which was available in coupe and cabriolet form. The new 356 also benefited from the addition of Dunlop four-wheel disc brakes as standard, a higher-lift camshaft for the 1600cc engine, new flat-face hubcaps, and deeper bucket seats. These seats came courtesy of Porsche's acquisition of Reutter, which included the future Recaro subsidiary. 356 production peaked at 14,151 cars in 1964 which was the first year the new 911 model went on the market. Porsche did, however, continue to sell the 356C in North America through to the end of 1965. In 2004 the US magazine 'Sports Car International' named the 356C number ten on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s. Today the Porsche 356 is a well-regarded collector's car that has stood the test of time and worldwide, thousands of 356 owners maintain the tradition, preserving their cars and driving them regularly. This particular car, MMU 95C, is a rare example indeed being a UK-supplied, right-hand drive car manufactured on the 20th of January 1st 1965 and registered on the 1st of April 1965. It was originally finished in Bali Blue with a Black leather interior and registered to AFN Ltd. as a demonstrator, and there is a sales record from AFN confirming the details. Chassis 131867 / Engine P.813597 / Ignition/door key K302 / Gear lock Key FE63 and Glove Box Key GZ365. The AFN stock number was 4.027.135 with registration number MMU 95C. The car was optioned from new with an outside air temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, St Christopher medallion on the glove box, radio and speakers, lap seat-belts, Hella fog lights and head rests. The second owner was a Mr H J Garland who owned the car right through until his passing in 2019 and used it frequently up until 1980 when it was stored on blocks but regularly had the engine turned over. Mr Garland also decided to have the engine rebuilt at around the same time and this was sent off to Germany to be done and the car has only covered 400 odd miles since it was returned and refitted. He had the car painted Orange during his ownership and then latterly back to Ford Anchor Blue, an attractive hue which it still displays today. There are details within the file of work carried out by AFN, relating to services and some body repairs, (front near side wing ) the requirement for which is detailed in a book “From Chain Drive to Turbocharger, The AFN Story” by Dennis Jenkinson, page 176 at which point the Porsche was being driven by John Aldington of AFN when the accident occurred.Since our vendor has owned the car (2019) the 356 has been totally recommissioned to including the whole fuel system, brakes all refurbished with calipers and pads being replaced and all fluids changed . Electrically the car has been gone through making sure all items work and the ignition system has been overhauled at the same time. It's supplied with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and the original number plate will remain on the vehicle. This little Porsche has lived a life. 55 years with its second owner, a couple of colour changes and numerous adventures during the Sixties and Seventies, however, gently recommissioned and with a fresh MOT it's now ready to live some more..SpecificationMake: PORSCHEModel: 356CYear: 1965Chassis Number: 131867Registration Number: MMU 95CTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 8135971Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 50672 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black LeatherClick here for more details and images

UK-supplied and 1 of only 100 right-hand drive Turbo Cabriolets; just 46,000 miles with a comprehensive history file. The 944 Turbo Cabriolet combined the Turbo S' 250bhp engine with the strengthened cabriolet body built by ASC at WeinsbergOnly 625 were built, with just 100 examples produced in right-hand drive for the UK, Japanese, Australian and South African marketsA very original UK/C16 example, with a fully verifiable 46,000 miles, in standard specification, with a full-service history, all old MOTs, a complete book pack, two keys and virtually every invoice from newMajor service on the 20th October 2021 including belts, all fluids changed and a comprehensive inspection by a well-respected Porsche SpecialistFrom 17 years long-term ownership, a simply lovely example of one of the rarest and most sought-after Porsches from the 1990sFollowing the international success of their nimble 924, Porsche designed an all-alloy, 2.5-litre, inline-four for their new 944 which they planned to introduce in 1982. Their talented engineers were able to produce a very smooth running four-cylinder engine by utilising two counter-rotating balance shafts running at twice engine speed. These carry eccentric weights which produce inertial forces that balance out the unbalanced secondary forces, all a bit technical but the result is a large four-cylinder engine that feels as turbine-smooth as a six. Cosmetically, the 944's bodywork was revised with wider wheel arches (similar to that of the 924 Carrera GT), a fresh interior and upgrades to the brakes and suspension. With greater visual presence and the performance to match, better handling, stopping power and more creature comforts, the 944 was a natural step forward. A 'turbo' version of the 944 was always on the cards, and the forced-induction boosted the 2.5-litre engine by a healthy 60bhp, necessitating an upgraded clutch and gearbox. The chassis was further developed and thicker anti-roll bars and four-pot brake calipers were fitted to deal with the significantly increased performance. Externally, a smoother nose panel and a larger rear spoiler distinguished it from its lesser siblings. In February 1991, the final year of 944 production, Porsche released the 944 Turbo Cabriolet which combined the Turbo S' 250bhp engine with the strengthened cabriolet body built by the ASC-American Sunroof Company at Weinsberg. Compared to the Coupe, the Cabriolet's windscreen is lowered about 6cm and raked back to reduce the wind noise when the top is down. Porsche initially announced that 600 would be made, but ultimately 625 were built, with just 100 examples produced in right-hand drive for the UK, Japanese, Australian and South African markets. These are rare cars, produced for just one year, with only 32 examples believed to still reside in the UK.This particular example is a UK-supplied, matching numbers car, presented in Graphite Metallic over a perfectly contrasting Dark Blue leather interior. It has covered just 46,500 miles from new which, over its 30 years of life, means that it has averaged just over 1,500 miles per year. The car is supplied with a fully detailed service history, with its most recent service carried out by ‘Zuffenhaus Porsche’ in October 2021, less than 250 miles ago. In addition, all the original manuals are present, alongside countless invoices and previous MOTs all helping corroborate the indicated mileage and emphasising how this lovely Porsche has been cared for on a 'no expense spared' basis. On offer from a private collection, this beautiful example presents delightfully both cosmetically and mechanically. With this era of Porsche on the rise, this rare 944 Turbo S offers a phenomenal driving experience, coupled with what may well be a worthwhile investment.SpecificationMake: PORSCHEModel: 944 TURBO CABRIOLETYear: 1991Chassis Number: WP0ZZZ95ZMN130478Registration Number: J950 OPMEngine Number: 47M01186 Odometer Reading: 46000 MilesMake:Click here for more details and images

A lovely, low ownership, 1955 86" Series 1 fresh from a fastidious restoration. Superbly restored Series 1 from long-term ownershipOriginally supplied new to a farmer in Shropshire Underwent body off - nut & bolt restoration in 2018/20Our vendor believes he is the car's 4th owner and it appears to have been used lightly all its lifeThe indicated mileage when he bought it was 20,192 .(see MOT 2005/06). Current 24,572This is a really lovely Srs 1, properly recommissioned and delightfully presentedAs an engineering marvel, the Land Rover can still outstrip its modern counterparts, and the Series I rightly belongs in the Motoring Hall of Fame. Hugely successful globally, improvements were made throughout its long lifespan. In 1950, the lights were moved from a position behind the grille to protrude through the mesh and in 1952 a larger 2.0-litre petrol engine replaced the original 1.6-litre. The wheelbase was extended to 86 inches in 1955 to give the vehicle more stability and greater load capacity. The stronger, more reliable 2.0-litre petrol engine was standard until 1957.This venerable Series 1 is believed to have been originally supplied new to a farmer in Shropshire before finding a home, some years later, in Bromsgrove where it appears to have been renovated and resprayed in a green (not Bronze Green). It was then sold to a Mr Wyatt in Telford who owned the car for many years before old age meant it had to be moved on. It was purchased by its current owner, our vendor, in 2006 and he used it regularly but lightly, until the decision was made to fully restore the 'Landie' with the process starting in 2018.Our vendor has kindly provided us with a list of the work carried out (below) and invoices and full details are in the cars history file.;Underwent body off - nut & bolt restoration in 2018/20.Chassis stripped, repaired where necessary, powder coated. The indicated mileage when he bought it was 20,192 (see MOT 2005/06) and the current mileage is 24,572 meaning that only 4,380 miles have been covered in the last 15 years.Often restored and rebuilt but rarely to this standard, this lovely 86" Series 1 is now ready to be enjoyed once again, be that at a local County Show or scattering the pheasants down a country lane. Despite, or perhaps because of, being recognisably related to the very first Land Rover of 1948, the Defender retained a steadfastly loyal customer base, indeed, in the UK in 2013 it even managed to out-sell the Range Rover.Big enough for all the family plus a brace of Labradors and luggage in the back, long-wheelbase Defenders remain highly usable, long-term keepers thanks to their practicality and their personality. For decades, the long-wheelbase model has found favour with diverse buyers, from armies and police forces to country hotels and farmers. In more recent times, Defenders have transcended to a new and different level, with tuning companies adapting them into high-performance driving machines, still with all the innate character, but with some startling new additions! The Defender 110 presented here is quite exceptional. Starting life as a 2011 TDCi XS model with the four-cylinder, 2.4-litre Puma unit, this latest engine was coupled to a revised, quieter transfer case and a new six-speed manual gearbox, which allowed a longer top gear for quiet, efficient long-distance cruising.Enter 'LOF' of Leicestershire, a specialist Land Rover manufacturing business, run by a chap whose Land Rover knowledge is quite simply encyclopaedic. Renowned for their engineering prowess, they manufacture and sell superb, uprated clutches, brakes, and other components for Land Rovers. 'Attention to detail' dictate how they manufacture and this ethos we see with this vehicle project.LOF set about creating the ultimate 110, to showcase the best of their products, plus some other choice offerings, going down the route of installing, at the heart of this vehicle, an American V8 engine. Many Land Rover tuners have done this, but to no greater effect than we see here - a more adaptable, sophisticated Ford-based 5.0-litre 'Coyote' Gen 2, V8 engine was utilised. Burbling through an adjustable exhaust value system, it is as tuneful as you would want from such a special engine. Around this, the rest of the vehicle was enhanced with specialist, high-quality products to create a super-powerful, yet very driveable high-performance 4x4. Properly designed, built, tested, and even ceramic coated, this is one hell of a Land Rover. With an amazing specification sheet (full details on request), an exemplary finish and attention to detail, this 110, nicknamed 'The DefStang', offers presence and performance to rival that of the £143,370 G63 'G-Wagon' or indeed Land Rover's own £150,000 Defender Works V8 70th Edition.SpecificationMake: LAND ROVERModel: DEFENDER 110 COYOTE 5.0 V8Year: 2011Chassis Number: SALLDHMS7BA824808Registration Number: V8 VBNTransmission: Manual Engine Number: 101119033556244DTDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: Bespoke Click here for more details and images
