London Gazette 1 December 1914: ‘Captain James Edward Somerville Woodman, 2nd Battalion, The Lancashire Fusiliers. Commanded three companies of his regiment in attack on Le Touquet, and afterwards commanded the section of defence which included that village.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 4 December 1914 and 17 February 1915. James Edward Somerville Woodman was born at Clifton on 26 July 1870, the son of Commander C. E. S. Woodman, R.N. From Sandhurst he was commissioned into the West India Regiment as 2nd Lieutenant on 7 January 1891, becoming Lieutenant in January 1893, and Captain in January 1898. He served with the West India Regiment in the Ashanti Expedition, 1895-96 (Star), and took part in the operations in Sierra Leone, 1898-99, with the Mendiland Expedition (Medal with clasp). In 1900 he transferred to the 4th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and served in West Africa (N. Nigeria), 1903-04, and took part in the operations in Bassa Province against the Okpotos (Medal with clasp). From July 1909 to March 1912, he held the Adjutancy of the King’s Own Malta Regiment of Militia. Woodman served in the European War with the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers from 22 August 1914, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry at Le Touquet. He was decorated by the King, 2 December 1914, on the occasion of His Majesty’s visit to the Expeditionary Force. ‘Captain Woodman went to France with the 2nd Battalion, and at the battle of Ligny, on August 26th, he at once, by his cool, imperturbable leading, proved himself a brave and capable officer. Before our artillery had come up and when the Germans were pressing he, with Captain Spooner and Lieutenant Cross, rallied a large number of men from different Companies and made a stand on the second ridge. He took part in the battles of the Aisne and the Marne, and those who served under him believe that he had a charmed life. Men fell around him, but he remained unscathed. At Le Touquet where Colonel Butler commanded a mixed force, Captain Woodman was in command of the Battalion, and led the attack on the village. For this he received the Distinguished Service Order. He was promoted Major. Major Woodman was present at all the actions up to May 2nd, 1915, when he suffered from the infamous German gas attack. In consequence of this he was sent to England, and for a short time commanded a detachment of the 3rd Battalion at Withernsea. He was subsequently appointed second in command of the 12th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, and with this Battalion he met his death in France between the 25th and 27th September, 1915. A soldier of studious habits, he found pleasure in the study of languages. He was thorough in all that he undertook. Reserved in manner, it was the reserve that comes to one who has felt the bitterness of disappointment in some of the tenderest relationships of life. With those under him he was strict and not very genial, and yet they were devoted to him, with an absolute confidence. During the winter of 1914-15 he was selected to take temporary command of the Monmouths, and in the short time he was there he impressed all ranks with his qualities as a commanding officer.’ (The Lancashire Fusiliers Annual for 1915 refers) Woodman was promoted to Major on 1 September 1915 and was killed in action in the battle of Loos on 26 September 1915. The Officer Commanding the 12th Northumberland Fusiliers wrote: ‘Major Woodman was with us through the bad time the battalion had on Saturday, 25 September, and after orders were received to take the German trenches by assault on the morning of Sunday, 26 September, he came up the hill with us and encouraged the men in the charge. The men could not run up the hill without a rest to get their breath again, and it was then that Major Woodman sat up and put up his field glasses to look at the enemy’s position. He was immediately shot through the heart, and fell over on his side. He was a brave and gallant officer, and you have the satisfaction of knowing that he died at the head of the battalion, facing the foe. We suffered very badly; only seven of our officers remained with the battalion after the charge, and of these only two were unhit. We all deplore Major Woodman’s loss, as he was a man of very wide experience, and was of the greatest help to us. One of the last things he did was to tell my servant to get back down the hill, as the boy had been wounded in the wrist, but still was going on.’ Sold with the following original documents: M.I.D. certificates dated 8 October 1914 and 14 January 1915 (F.M. Sir John French’s despatches of those dates); another related M.I.D. certificate for ‘Lieut. C. E. T. Woodman, 20th Hussars’, dated 7 November 1917 (F.M. Haig); Royal Warrant for the D.S.O., dated 28 November 1914, and signed by Kitchener, together with a copy of the Statutes and War Office enclosure letter; various registered envelopes addressed to his next of kin; and copied research.

Spanish school of the XIX century, following Andalusian models of the XVII century."Young man in the garden".Oil on antique canvas.Frame of the eighteenth century, repainted.Measurements: 83 x 109 cm; 94,5 x 120 cm (frame). The author of the present composition combines in an exceptional way the genre of the still life of flowers with the Andalusian baroque models of the end of the XVII century. A young girl looks directly at the viewer as she works as a florist, assembling a delicate bouquet of flowers in her hands. The wicker baskets, the stone planters and the majolica flowerpots complete a totally aesthetic work, a faithful reflection of the Andalusian pictorial models of the late 17th century. The work is an advance on the gallant and hedonistic, cheerful and colorful compositions that marked the course of 19th century Andalusian painting, inspired by an idealized past, often from the 17th and 18th centuries.

JOSÉ BLANCO CORIS (Málaga, 1862 - 1946).Untitled.Oil on canvas glued to board.Signed in the lower right corner.Measurements: 79 x 58 cm; 92 x 72 cm (frame).Painter, writer and professor at the School of Arts and Crafts of Madrid, José Blanco Coris always showed a deep interest in Japanese and East Asian art, and in fact wrote an important "Manual of Decorative Art" (Madrid, 1916-21) in which he dedicated chapters to the arts of China and Japan. Blanco Coris was trained in his native Malaga, in the School of Fine Arts of the city, where he had Bernando Ferrándiz as his main teacher. He began his career making great history paintings in the nineteenth-century style, such as the "Presentation of Cardinal Cisneros to Isabella the Catholic" of 1881. Also around this time he delved into the themes of gentle realism, reaping a special success with "Children in a Boat" (1883), which won him the gold medal at the International Exhibition in Boston. Already at the beginning of the new century, Blanco Coris will evolve towards a less sweetened costumbrismo, at the same time that he begins to cultivate the still life. In the twenties he presented works of these genres at the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts and the Salones de Otoño. Although he was permeable to the advances of impressionism, in the twentieth century he was especially critical of the avant-garde, always remaining outside them. At the same time he developed a notable teaching career, which he began after failing to obtain a post as a pensioner in Rome in 1888. He entered the School of Fine Arts in Malaga as an assistant in 1891, to later become a temporary professor (1893). He finally obtained the position of full professor at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid in 1902, developing since then his career in the Spanish capital. Today José Blanco Coris is represented in the Museum of Malaga and in various private collections.

It features a long fin adhered to the top, a pair of tinted acrylic eye lenses, and a grill located at the mouth. Faux metal nuts are dotted around the lenses, and the helmet's interior is painted black, which has chipped away in some places. There are signs of production use still present on the helmet, including scuffing to the paint finish, glue remnants on the lenses, and a screw hole on the back from when it was mounted to the dummy. The impact of the dummy hitting the bank during filming caused notable damage to the rear of the helmet, and there is a crack near the mouth's right side. 1937 Humber 12 SaloonMake: Humber Model: 12Year: 1937Mileage: 80674VIN: 1225459Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: AC0 707 Transmission: manualThe Humber 12 was the forerunner of the immediate post-war Hawk series. It catered to an upper middle class clientele by offering a touch of luxury in a four-cylinder car that was still quite reasonably priced yet stylish, with what Rootes referred to as 'controlled streamlining'. This 1669cc black example was registered in May 1937, and while details on any work done to it over the years are sparse, the history file is nevertheless quite fascinating. It includes the current V5C, a 1930s' service parts catalogue plus other technical documentation - both original and photocopied - such as a service information on the Bendix-Stromberg carburettor. There's a well-preserved period brochure as well, plus 1970s' correspondence from Chrysler (which took over Humber) and a few photos of the vehicle at various points through its life. Especially nice for all those who prize period details is the original Humber-branded envelope for the owner's manual, which also contains the original manufacturer's guarantee, a 'quick start' guide showing the dashboard layout and a May 1937 personal letter from Humber's sales manager to the new owner. There's also a photograph from the Western Morning News showing an old couple with the car - we'll hazard a guess that it's the original owners reunited with it. There's evidence that this car has had quite the TV and film career too, with a 2013 call sheet for The Imitation Game movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley, a 2014 one for Grantchester (ITV) and 2015 ones for Jekyll & Hyde (ITV) and Close to the Enemy (BBC). A Google search also reveals it's been in The Bletchley Circle, Churchill's Secret, Foyle's War and potentially the Oscar-winning The King's Speech too (albeit with a different numberplate) so whoever acquires this car can have a lot of fun spotting its on-screen appearances. Overall condition is good, although the paint is past its best in places on the body, and has cracked in some spots. The interior looks to have been retrimmed at some point, with the mid-brown leather and the wooden dashboard in very good order. The odometer records the mileage as 80,074 miles. New front tyres were fitted at 62,000 miles. The current mileage is recorded as 63,662. The history folder includes the V5C, current MoT certificate (valid until October 2022) and the original document wallet with owner's handbook, driver pack, dealer guide, assorted Renault service invoices from the car's earlier life.
