Collection of Great War Diaries, Medals etc to Ernest Lambert Royal Field Artillery. Ernest joined up in September 1914 and went over to France in July 1915. He had the dangerous task of Line Layer and Signaller with 93 Brigade. His diaries are for 1916, 1917, 1918 & 1919. Entries provide an interesting record of life for a humble private and as his job was to keep signal wires functioning he provides a typical entry on March 6th "The huns broke every wire and still shelling like fury" Later in April he records "Anniversary of crucifixtion of Canadian soldier Ypres 1915" Clearly what turned out to something of a myth is regarded as fact by Ernest and no doubt affected the treatment of German prisoners! He also notes "bad start under arrest by RSM for not getting up" In September "Guilimont ..in an awful place German dead all over" and later "Rise at 4.00am and get stuck in..we lay about 5 miles of armoured cable thats going some, nothing to eat from 4.00 till 7am" July 1917 " During the last weeks or so the bombardment steadily increses and we get a hell of a lot of work bringing wire up we are more like pack animals than men" At Third Ypres he records "many casualties" and goes forward on Pilkem Ridge. "Fritz planes bombing dropped one in our lines killed 4 horses wounded 3" "We go to Gouvrier Farm? for rations what a hot spot took us four hours to get back through barrage.. The Steinbeck is the worst shelled area I have been on including Vimy" etc. etc., His 1918 contains some interesting detail on his experiences during the German 1918 Spring Offensive and the entry on November 11, when the fighting stopped is very matter of fact. Includes named medals, Victory, 14/15 Star and some nice cloth badges. Overall a very detailed and comprehensive collection, worthy of more research.
