A silver-mounted hanger, circa 1800-1810, perhaps for an American officer with earlier curved blade double-edged towards the point, retaining traces of a brief series of stamps within each of the two fullers on both sides at the forte, the edges sharpened for use, silver cross-piece cast with a central panel of diagonal flutes, a pair of short quillons with recurved scallop-shell terminals and an integral collar, the latter inscribed with the owner's name 'Edward Bullock,' grip of natural staghorn, and with a strongly formed silver 'eagle's' head pommel of crested type finely engraved with a complex feather pattern (the blade lightly patinated, the pommel slightly compressed about the tang button) 70.2cm; 27.625in blade 'Eagle's' head sword pommels were popularised in America as an obviously patriotic motif and existed in a wide variety of forms of both English and domestic origin. Such examples date from the Revolutionary period to beyond the War of 1812. The distinctive crested form of the present example together with the sophisticated quality of the engraved detail suggest an American manufactory date of about 1805. It is likely that the inscription also dates from this period. Whilst the general characteristics of this pommel suggest an American origin, the acute curvature of the beak in particular is not attributable to a known American type. The cross-piece and blade date from circa 1770 and are almost certainly English.

A comparable Medieval example is preserved in the Nasser D.Khalili collection, Acc. No. MTW 1370 (see D. Alexander, 1992, Cat. No. 23, p.64) The head also compares with that of a Saxon parade mace of carved hardstone, recorded in the inventory of the Electoral Kunstkammer in Dresden taken in 1619 (Dresden Rustkammer, Inv.
