Lot 763

Buckskin Hunting Shirt or Frock with Quillwork, ca. 1840s-1850s Early American, frontier hunting shirt or frock of buckskin leather, embellished with polychrome, quillwork decorative motifs. Quillwork style suggests a northern Plains origin, possibly Minnesota Sioux. The cut, style and trimming of the coat would suggest that it was made in the 1840s or 1850s. Although likely native American-made, the cut would suggest a traditional white man's form of hunting frock in use during this time period. The breast is made to button closed with flat brass buttons of, each back is marked. "Coin" buttons of this sort were commonly produced both in England and later America during the period 1810-1840 and can be found on numerous archaeological sites of this period. The buttons are attached and "stayed" to the breast by running the shanks through a lace, which it whipstiched to the inside of the coat body and covered over with an innerfacing or partial lining down the breast front of a plaid, woolen material. This material was a type commonly procured by the United States Army in the 1840s and 1850s for various uses, including lining soldiers' uniform jackets (there are extant examples of uniforms produced at Schuykill Arsenal using this lining material and it is also listed in supply inventories). The Army was also responsible for overseeing the Indian Agencies during this period and this material was also procured for use at the Indian "factories" or trading posts. The hunting frock show considerable usage during the period, with wear and staining as to be expected, including fading and abrasion to the polychrome quillwork. Rare. Provenance: private Western collection until c. 1998; purchased by the city of Harrisburg, PA for a proposed Wild West Museum; deaccessioned and sold in 2013; private collection to present.

Lot 1251

The address on barrels is, "13. Bruton Street. London.". New premises were found just off New Bond Street at 13 Bruton Street. The company moved in on Monday June 10, 1960. A very similar shotgun can be found on page 318 listed as a Cased Royal Pigeon Gun #33852 with two sets of barrels tested on March 26, 1952. The information on this gun comes from the book, "Holland & Holland" by Donald Davis. This shotguns comes with an identical matched set with the only variants being the choke. They are finished in a beautiful polished royal blue, full scooped rib, single silver bead, the breech end of the rib and barrels is beautiful English scroll engraving that extends 2" from frame. The Holland & Holland along with 13. Bruton Street. London." is set in gold. The barrels are number 1 and C1, also in gold. Of course both barrels are both near mint, and have 99.99% blue showing no signs of use. The deluxe walnut checkered forend is a splinter style, finely hand checkered with an antiqued French satin nickel furniture which is finely engraved with an inset gold number 1 with a Deeley push button release with the exception of the rear section which is engraved and finished in the same blue as barrels. It is gold plated, locking mechanism is inside, excellent condition with the exception of two quarter inch storage nicks on breech left side that have been on there for awhile and could easily be repaired to not exist. The frame is a true side lock that features complete coverage, English fine scroll engraving, all of the protruding pins are finished in gold and as are the double set triggers. Front locking mechanism, the word 'safe', and the number 1 on barrel release are gold as well. The barrel release and side plate take down mechanism were finished in royal blue and are all engraved. The frame side plates show no visible screw heads. In fact, the only screws can be found at the bottom of the frame, rear bottom of trigger guard, and take down lever, all of which are royal blue and engraved as well. Serial number on lower tang is set in gold, the trigger guard is in royal blue and the frame is a French satin nickel with antique background. The face of the receiver, around firing pins shows only a ghost image indication little to no use. The deluxe grained walnut stock features extremely fine wrap around hand checkering at wrist and butt with tear drop side panels and gold owners ID plaque at base. Wood to metal fit is as to be expected, flawless, as is the oil finish and execution of checkering is beyond the talent of just about any living wood worker. This fine set comes in an original monogramed, "RJH", leather case with straps, solid brass corners, made of oak, lined in green velvet with the trade makers label in leather on inside lid. Comes with a set of Holland & Holland English black leather barrel covers, ebony cleaning rod, Holland & Holland nickel plated oil bottle, two Holland & Holland snap caps, cleaning brushes, keys and black leather pouch. The replacement cost to order this shotgun today would take several years and would be north of $75,000USD. It is obvious this a shotgun for the man who wants only the best and can afford to pay for it. It would be a prize in any gun room or in the field. Serial Number-30786; Manufacturer-Holland & Holland; Model-SxS; Barrel Length-27"; FFL Status-Curio & Relic; Gauge-12; Chamber-2-3/4"; Length of Pull-15-3/8"; Drop at Comp-1-3/8"; Drop at Heel-2-1/8"; Internal Bore Diameter-0.729; Barrel Wall Thickness-All .034";CORRECTION: This shotgun has a Deeley released, not an Anson Release.
