A 19TH CENTURY GILT BRASS FRENCH REPEATER CARRIAGE CLOCK with overhead swing carrying handle, bevelled glass, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals and back plate inscribed `Promoli and Hausbourg, Paris` push button repeat mechanism striking on a bell, 6 1/2" high, in original green Morocco leather carrying case (see illustration). Provenance according to a card sold with the lot; `the clock originally belonged to Lord Ashton who had a special fixture made in his carriage for travelling purposes`. It has then descended through his family including Miss Margaret Ashton who became the first lady councillor in Manchester.

A scarce German 1921 pattern Naval officer`s dirk, converted to Third Reich Water Protection dagger by the addition of the Police emblem to the grip, plain plated blade 9¾", the brass hilt with flat locking spring having no release button, solid black plastic grip with superimposed Police eagle badge, in its brass sheath with knotted rope ring mounts, together with gold bullion portepee. A fencing foil, rigid 29" blade of square section with brass button and stamped "Solingen", the steel hilt with figure of eight guard, urn shaped pommel, and wire bound hexagonal grip in the manner of the 18th Century; and 2 other duelling epees, with triangular section blades and steel cup hilts. A French fencing foil, slender 35" blade of triangular section by Rieul (?), Paris, with large aluminium cup guard; another fencing foil, with slender square section blade and large button, shallow dish guard with crosspiece and finger rings; a theatrical smallsword in the style of the early 18th century; and a padded leather fencing mask, stamped "B.H.& G, 37L". A mid 18th century Scottish Basket Hilted Military Broadsword the basket composed of panels and round section bars, the side and knuckle plates are pierced with hearts and holes and are multi grooved, the outer shield is framed by two parallel lines of grooving and has a series of holes within this frame, otherwise it is pierced with hearts and central hole with the inner shield being replaced by a ring. The forward guards are fairly deep and the small pommel is decorated with four semi circular grooves, there is a small tang button. The arms of the hilt sit in an equatorial groove in the pommel. The spirally grooved wooden grip has an iron ferrule at the base of the base of the basket. The earlier massive German blade is 1 1/2" wide at the ricasso and is parallel sided to within a few inches of the point, it has two short fullers flanking the ricasso between which is an unidentified sword smith`s mark on both sides, there are three long fullers from the ricasso to within 7" of the point, the central fuller bearing the mark `Andria Ferara` Overall length 42 1/2" Blade 36 3/4"
An early 18th century Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword the basket formed of panels and square section bars, the plates are pierced with arrow heads and holes, the side and knuckle plates being multi grooved, a single groove frames each shield, the edges of all plates are decorated with deeply cut merlons. The domed pommel has an equatorial groove into which the arms of the hilt fit and a shallow tang button, with German double edged blade has two fullers of nearly full length and patination Overall length 37 3/4" Blade 32 3/4" Notes: The blade is of a type commonly marked `Solingen me fecit` and/or `Andrea Ferrara`. The patination to the blade has however covered any traces that may be left This sword bears a relationship to lots 534 and 535
A Scottish mid 18th century Military Basket Hilted Backsword the basket of large proportions, it is formed of bars of rounded section and panels, the multi grooved knuckle plate and side plates are pierced with hearts and holes, the edges being decorated with shallow indentations. The outer shield is also pierced with hearts and holes, framed with a triple grooved border and decorated, top and bottom with `fish tails` and shallow filing. The inner shield is replaced with a ring, the fore guards are of modest depth and the arms of the hilt join in a ring under the bun shaped pommel, surmounted by a large integral tang button. The fish skin covered grip has a twist of brass wire in the groove and iron ferrules top and bottom. The unmarked English blade has a wide full length fuller and a narrow fuller for about half it`s length, the remainder of the blade is double edged Overall length 45" Blade 39" Notes: The blade is of the type frequently marked `Samuel Harvey`.
A mid 18th century Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword the basket composed of panels and round section bars, the knuckle plate, side plates and shields are all pierced with hearts and holes, those on the shields framed by a double groove, the other plates having vertical grooving. The large bi-conical pommel has a small capstan shaped tang button, the wooden grip is probably a replacement. The earlier German blade has a fuller extending to around half of the blade length, bearing in one side the running wolf of Solingen/Passau partially inlaid in copper, the scabbard is of plain leather with a brass mouthpiece and chape Overall length 38 1/4" Blade 33" Notes: Overall the basket looks somewhat like those produced by the Allan family of Stirling, when a standard basket was requested. An early 19th century Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword the basket formed of plates and round section bars, the side plates and knuckle plate are pierced with holes and the shields are pierced with hearts and holes. The pommel is discoid with `pie crust` decoration and it sits in a rig riveted to the arms of the hilt. It has a spherical tang button (the pommel and ring possibly replaced). The grip is black shagreen with a double twist of silver wire in the groove, it has steel ferrules top and bottom, the basket has a full leather liner faced with red fabric and edged with blue silk. The unmarked blade is in a good state of polish and has double fullers to within a few inches of the point. The black leather scabbard has three mounts all heavily embossed with thistles, which test as silver. Overall length 39 1/4" Blade 33 1/2" Notes: The overall appearance of the sword is similar to known examples marked `McLeod, College Street, Edinburgh`, who worked between 1813 and 1837. [`Scottish Arms Makers` by Charles E. Whitelaw P.112]. It is interesting to note that the plates display very fine engraving comparable to that found on Scottish pistols of the 18th century.
