A rare late 18th century English carved and painted wooden British soldier doll, with inset dark glass eyes with white glass corners, gesso covered face painted with solid arched brows, rosy cheeks, rosebud lips, the turned torso with flat back, red kid arms and white painted straight legs only jointed at the hip, original red velvet tail coat, white linen trousers and white shoulder and waist belt, brass buttons and black velvet hat originally nailed to the head -15in. (38cm.) high (a crack around the perimeter of the face, significant gesso loss up the right side, leg loose and missing two button)
A rare British set of velvet animal skittles 1910-1920s, possibly Chad Valley, comprising three seated velvet tabby cats with curly tails, one orange, one blue and one yellow, green and black glass eyes, black painted stripes and red stitched nose and mouth -7in. (18cm.) high, two yellow and green velvet owls with black painted feathers, a head and shoulders of a cream velvet dog with brown patches, black boot button eyes, black stitched nose and mouth, black oil-cloth collar and red felt conical hat, another cream velvet begging dog with brown velvet ears, black pin-head eyes and leather muzzle, an orange velvet squirrel with black glass eyes, black stitched nose and mouth and brown mohair tail and a brown felt monkey Kingpin with pink felt face, glass eyes and red felt Fez and collar, all on turned wooden bases and a pink and yellow velvet ball (begging dog with holes in from leg, some slight wear and fading, split to seam of ball and back of monkey patched) - the monkey does not seem to be the same quality of the other animal, but toy production of this type in England was not a precise process and they probably just used toys available to make up the set
An unmarked bisque headed character doll possibly DeFuisseaux, with blue painted eyes, black top eyeliner, closed rosebud mouth, button nose, single stroke light brown eyebrows, brown mohair wig, jointed composition body and a homemade asymmetrical dress made from a piece of hand painted flower silks -16in. (40cm.) high (hairline crack down back of head)
A very rare Steiff rod jointed Monkey 35PPB with elephant button, with brown mohair, black boot button eyes, inset velvet face, ear, hands and feet, black cross stitched nostrils, slightly raised nose, a red painted seam for mouth, central seam from face down back of head, rod jointed mechanism comprising two short rods from limb to limb, wires down the limbs to the hands and feet and a rod looped around the arm joint going into the head, velvet hands with stitched fingers and separate thumbs and a very rare elephant button in the left ear with S shaped trunk -14in. (36cm.) height seated, 24in. (61cm.) overall length (missing right ear, right arm cleanly broken through at elbow and patched, holes and protruding wire through hands and feet, some balding areas, general wear and fading) Notes - his head mechanism is intriguing as the head goes significantly backwards and forwards in a valley, his arm joint is much high than on the Rod Bears, so the loop of the neck joint is much higher. It would appear that has been made so the head rocks backwards and forwards, but it is possible that this valley and movements has caused over time. Provenance - Monkey belonged to the vendor’s Grandfather James Kay Harrison who was a born and bred Lancastrian, growing up near lake Windermere. James was born in 1901 and was an only child so it is assumed Monkey was a present from his parents. He founded Abinger Preparatory School in Abinger Hammer in Surrey which he took to Canada during the 2nd World War, returning later to Cumbria. Monkey has always just been called Monkey, not very imaginative but it suits him. Monkey always sat in the vendor’s Grandfather's study and the various children were allowed to play with him now and then when staying with them. James Harrison had two children, six grandchildren, and monkey has been involved with over a hundred years of play. He is sold with two JPEG images, one of James as a young boy wearing a dress and the other of his grandchildren in the 1960s with Monkey in a cart
