An Unusual Gilt-Hilted Court SwordEarly 19th CenturyWith sharply tapering blade of hollow triangular section, the forte etched and gilt over each side with scrolling flowering foliage above a panel of elaborate scrolls, the latter centred on crowned royal arms on one side, and on the other with the name 'Banister Trulock', hilt comprising slightly dished shell-guard with upper border of chased laurel, and with engraved silver garter star, quillon-block and faceted stopper-shaped pommel decorated with laurels en suite, recurved quillons each with lion-mask terminal, small scrolled arms, knuckle-guard (some damage to gilding) with monster-head terminal, roped button, later grip bound with twisted silver wire, and much original gilding 72 cm. bladeFootnotes:The decoration on the blade may be a commemorative reference to the attempted assassination of George III at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on the evening of the 15 May 1800. Bannister Truelock was a shoemaker and religious fanatic who prophesied the second coming of Jesus Christ. In December 1800 he was admitted to Bethlem Royal Hospital for allegedly persuading James Hadfield that by shooting the king, he would bring peace to the world.
