French Violin, with two piece flamed maple back and sides, red brown varnish , fitted in padded period case marked W.E. Hill and Sons, together with three bows. Length of back of violin35.3cm Condition report: The belly has heavy scratching and wear from bridge movement and general use. There are no cracks to either plates however the joint between the two halves of the back as well as the heel and the button and the fingerboard can be felt perhaps due to slight movement. Two of the bows need a re-hair and are in poor condition. The case shows significant wear from a hard working life.

An unusual and scarce Victorian portable door lock, Edwin Cotterill's Patent Lock Sentinel, hinge bound metal plates with opposing notches to the interior edge, the other portion with a small lock, the rod itself connecting to the lock and turns when the key moves the button at right angles to the plates, the smaller lock and Royal Climax Detector key both stamped C, fitted leather case as issued, c.1850Edwin Cotterill (1815-1868), of Birmingham, was an engineering inventor and locksmith in the true Victorian spirit. This lock (Provisional Patent No. 1331, 12th May 1857) was designed and mainly used by wealthy travellers who would insert the lock in the keyholes of their hotel room doors to block unauthorised entry. Unfortunately, Cotterill did not apply for Letters Patent within the allotted time, thus no Patent was issued. Perhaps that might have been caused by his knowledge of a similar lock, called a Lock Protector being m ade by S. Mordan about 1830.

The 103rd Bombay Fusiliers (Royal Dublin Fusiliers) Mid 19th Century Print by Rudolph Ackermann. This large and detailed print depicts the Bombay Fusiliers on parade wearing coatees and shakos, being presented medals. The title being "The Presentation of The Medals and Clasps to the Bombay Fusiliers" "on the 10th Day of February 1852". The address of the publisher Rudolph Ackermann is given as 191 Regent Street. Mounted into a contemporary oak glazed frame, this intern mounted with a gilt button of the 103rd Bombay Fusiliers. Overall size 38 x 29 1/2 inches. Some foxing. By Family Repute from the Officer's Mess of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on disbandment.

Victorian 16th Queen's Lancers Other Rank's lance cap. A good Victorian example. Patent leather body, peak and crown with ornate gilt metal fleur bosses to each corner. Regimental lance plate to front with battle honours up to "Alma" Lion's head bosses support brass and leather-backed chin chain. Woollen cord boss with regimental button to centre supports a black horsehair plume mounted in gilt metal plume holder. The interior with wax cotton lining and part of the paper issue label. GC.

Lot 575

Army Medical Staff Victorian Officer's Cocked Hat. A good and extremely rare example. Black silk bicorne, the front and fan 6 in. and 7 in. high respectively. Black silk rosette under a bright gilt metal scale loop fastened with a gilt Medical Staff button. A gold bullion tassel with worked head at each end. A band of black oakleaf lace between the loop and the tassels. Fine glazed leather headband and pleated crimson silk lining. At the centre of the top, a square plume-socket with spring-clip. The very distinctive metal scaled loop is prescribed for Medical Staff in the 1864 issue of Dress Regulations. The dimensions of the cocked hat given in 1864 were larger than this. In the next edition (10 years later), the dimensions of the hat were like this example but meanwhile the unusual metal loop had been discontinued

Bullion dulled with one moth hole to the crown.

Victorian Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander's cased cocked hat & epaulettes. A fine black beaver skin example, to the left side a black silk rosette with a single twist loop mounted with a gilt Victorian button to the centre. The cocked hat is edged with one inch black lace; at each end, bullion tassels with blue lines. The interior is with leather sweatband and silk pleated lining. Tailor's label for J. Gieve & Sons ... Accompanied by full dress bullion epaulettes with silver bullion fouled anchor and Compass Rose indicating the rank of Lieutenant Commander ... Also a full dress leather sword belt with gilt clasp and two lines of bullion. The clasp with a post 1901 device. Housed in the original metal and velvet lined storage tin. This with painted name of "M.J. Parkes Buchanan" Bullion remains bright GC It appears that Captain Parkes Buchanan purchased his cocked hat set second hand as he was appointed a cadet in the Royal Naval Colleges Osborne and Dartmouth (1910 - 1913) , he was appointed a midshipman in the cruiser HMS Minerva on the outbreak of Great War. During the war he saw service onboard HMS WEAR on patrol and other duties in the Gulf of Smyrna and off the Dardanelles April 1915 to January 1916 and in the battleship HMS Agamemnon and by the end of the war commanded the sloop HMS Veronica. Remaining with the peace time Navy in 1939 he was serving as Deputy Inspector of Naval Ordnance, Home Fleet. During WW2 he held various shore postings and retired in 1949. He records are held by the Imperial War Museum.

Queen's Own Dorset Yeomanry Officer's tunic. A scarce Hussar pattern full dress tunic of dark blue melton cloth,with scarlet facings to the collar and cuffs. To each breast six silver bullion gimp cord drop loops with gimp purl buttons, loop and olivettes also with concealed hook and eye fasting. Retaining bullion shoulder cords these with gold button "T" badges. Gimp cord is repeated to the back of the tunic. The interior with quilted silk lining with tailor's label of Sandon & Co. and faint ink name "Sir Thomas Lees". One shoulder button absent, minor moth damage to the cuff, not effecting the overall appearance, bullion bright.

1st Class Court Dress Coatee Uniform of Sir Henry Badeley KCB CBE. Comprising: Cocked Hat. A fine example of black beaver skin, with black silk rosette, mounted with three loops of gold bullion cord, mounted with a Royal Arms Button. The cap is edged with white ostrich feathers. Black cotton lining to the interior. .... A superb example, of the tailcoat, dark blue melton cloth, emblazoned with gold bullion oak leaf embroidery. To each breast seven rows of floral embroidery, the uppermost flowing around the back of the neck. This pattern of embroidery can be found to the false dark blue faced pocket flaps, and flowing around the edge of each tail. The cuffs and collar are also richly embroidered. The interior with original lining. Bullion remains bright and fresh. ... White Kerseymere Breeches, retaining gilt metal buckles. ... White Stockings. The overall condition is bullion remains bright and fresh. (4 items) Sir Henry John Fanshawe Lord Badeley KCB CBE was born in June 1874. He entered the Parliament Office in 1897 and was Principal Clerk and Taxing Officer at the Judicial Department of the House of Lords from 1919 to 1930. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1920 and became Assistant Clerk of the Parliaments in 1930. In 1934 he was promoted to Clerk of the Parliaments, an office he held until 1949. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in 1935] and elevated to the peerage as Baron Badeley, of Badley in the County of Suffolk, in 1949. After his retirement the Marquis of Salisbury said of him: "He could almost be described as the father of the house, for he had been the guide, philosopher and friend.He retired as Clerk of Parliaments in 1949 and died in 1951.

Regulation infantry pattern, but with the special regimental feature of a row of narrow black cord, attached to a purl button, at each end of the collar. Four black gimp loops each side, forming eyes and double drops. Austrian knots to sleeves, and backseam ornaments, all in black gimp. Shoulder-straps edged with braid and bearing single embroidered star. Minor moth damage, the four olivettes absent, otherwise GC.

Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry Officer's Scarlet Tunic. A good example of the 1880 pattern, scarlet melton cloth with white facings to the collar and cuffs, the collar retaining Regimental pattern button and cord collar badges. The bullion shoulder cords retaining single Bath rank Stars, but show evidence of a rank badge absent. Complete with Regimental buttons and to the interior silk lining. Minor age and service wear GC ... A label to the pocket of the tunic attributes it to Lieutenant Colonel A.E. Sanderson DSO and worn by him until his death in 1932. Lieutenant Colonel Aymor Eden Sanderson was commissioned into the OX & Bucks Light Infantry in 1905. Promoted Captain on the 25th July 1914, which this rank he landed in France during May 1915. He was awarded the DSO (LG 16/9/18) and Mentioned in Despatches on three occasions.

Pressed black fibre peak and complete with leather sweatband. Retains faint Wurzburg tailor's celluloid diamond. Minor service wear and tiny traces of moth. Superb shape. VGC ... Tunic, a fine Officer quality Oberfeldwebel's four pocket example, lower pockets slanted; turnback cuffs. Aluminium black backed litzen to collar which bears aluminium lace around the top edge, aluminium lace surrounding the black piped shoulder strap that each bear pebbled button with II, two rank stars with 3 in between. Black piped front seam, silvered BeVo eagle and swastika to breast, the other side retaining ribbons for two Armed Forces awards with gilt and silvered eagle emblem. One stitched loop AF. Above the breast eagle, sweeping from shoulder strap to font seam, an aluminium woven Marksmanship lanyard. VGC
