Crooke, 1638, engraved portrait frontispiece (not called for), trimmed to image and window-mounted, occasional minor damp-staining to lower margins, two leaves with small loss to lower blank outer corner (one repaired), early 19th century diced calf, joints cracked, some wear and damp-staining, small 8vo ESTC S113550. Originally published in 1614 as 'A wife now a widowe'. All editions of this book are now scarce despite it being a popular book, reprinted and enlarged several times during the seventeenth century. Several characters are described, including: 'An Innes of Court man'; 'A Puny-Clarke'; 'A meere Pettyfogger'; and 'A Button-maker of Amsterdam'. In addition the book contains various poems, 'Newes From any whence', paradoxes, receipts and songs. John Webster and John Donne are amongst the various authors who also contributed to this edition.
