Lot 874

Flask and Cup. Antique gadget “tipple” sticks are fairly common. However this one is rather different. At the press of a button the top flips up ( the spring is still strong) and the cup appears. Twist the top and the cup can be removed exposing the flask complete with cork.. The flask, which is 20”/510mm long, can be removed. The cup and cap are heavily embossed with an attractive Arabic? design. The collar directly below the “cup” is marked “Patent. Made in Germany” Shaft is sturdy bamboo with mottled pattern. Ferrule is brass with steel tip. The cane is 34.5”/760mm long and 1”/25.4mm diameter at the handle. Circa 1890/1900.

Lot 875

An antique cane for the cigarette smoking traveller, Set into the beaded decoration round the brass handle of this cane is a small button. Click this and the top of the handle opens to reveal an ashtray. This is complete with a cigarette rest. This rest can then be swivelled round to allow placement of a cigarette. The brass collar just below the handle carries a floral decoration and a cartouche marked “H.H. 106 Chester Rd”.The shank of the cane is partridge wood and has the original brass ferrule with a steel tip. Overall length 32 ½”/825mm. Length and light design indicates a ladies cane. From around 1900-1910.

Lot 873

The leather covered spherical handle, in the form of a cricket ball, has a button which when depressed opens to reveal a decorated brass dome cover. Operate the small adjacent lever and this top springs open to reveal a glass inkwell. The interior of this brass cover has a spring loaded pad. When closed this pad acts as a seal as it is forced against the bottle top. This domed cap is held down and further tightened by re-adjusting the lever. This ensures the inkwell is sealed to prevent spillage. Mounted on a hardwood shaft with a brass ferrule. Some minor wear to the leather covering and ferrule Length 31.5 inches / 80cmCirca 1880. Similar example cane be seen in “Cane Curiosa” page 157, items 14/3 and 14/4

Lot 888

The handle of this stick has a small button on the side which, when pressed, clicks open to reveal two spring loaded coin holders. One holder is 22mm diameter and the other just over 19” diameter .These are an ideal size to carry a gold sovereign (22mm diameter) and a half sovereign (19.5mm diameter.) The sovereign was first introduced 1489 but it was not until 1817 that the coin was redesigned as the “Sole Standard Measure of Value”. These coin holders would also hold a 20 franc gold coin known, colloquially, as “The Napoleon”. First issued in 1803, 21 mm in diameter and the 10 franc gold coin first issued in 1855 19mm diameter. These coins continued in use through the 19th century. The metal ferrule is original and just over 1½”/ 40mm long. Overall length of the cane is 36 ½”/920mmThe condition of the handle is good. The button catch works well. The shaft is a hard wood and shows some signs of wear.

Lot 823

Cane With Brass Magnifying Glass. This is a very interesting and useful gadget cane. The top consisting of a small magnifying glass that can be used when attached to the cane or can be removed and used in isolation. The top is in the form of (or actually is) a naval button dating from the time when a king was monarch. (See opposite page.) Early 20th century. The cane is a lovely example of magnifying cane free from breaks or cracks but evidently well used. A few dents on the base ferrule but still solid and firmly in place. The cane shaft has been cleaned and restored back to original condition. Measurements: Top Shaft Diameter: 1.75cm Base Shaft Diameter: 1.25cm Cane Length: 94cmNaval Officers ButtonsSince 1880 naval officers, warrant officers and chief petty officers have been wearing a uniform which required buttons to fasten (rather than for decorative purpose). The foul anchor device itself was first recorded in use in the seal of the Lord High Admiral of Scotland in 1402. It was subsequently adopted in the Admiralty seal and by a large number of navies throughout the world. The rope 'fouling' has no specific twist and may be deemed to be correct however it fits around the anchor [see Kings crown button below]. Whatever variation we see today is likely to have at least one manifestation in the past 400 years. The buttons on the left is very different from that one the right. Yet they are both Royal Naval buttons. The first one [left] has a QUEENS CROWN (St Edward’s) and the second [right] a KINGS CROWN (Tudor). Design dependant on reigning monarch.

Lot 871

Victorian antique walking stick/cane with a steel measuring tape set in the handle brass top. These were used in Victorian Lawn Bowls Game. Original brass ferrule. Marked on the top “The Taylor Rolph Co Ltd. Mortlake, London”. Also on the side “John Raborn and Sons, Birmingham, England”. The cane has the original ferrule and measures 35”/890mm. Automatic retraction by pushing the side button. Unfortunately this is no longer functioning. Tape can be used but needs to be fed back manually. It will pull out to approx 2 feet. Tapes used in bowls are unmarked as they were, and still are, just used to compare distance between two balls so no increments are necessary. Steel bowling tapes have given way to present day string tapes. Taylor Rolph first started making wooden bowls around 1820 and went on to produce a wide range of accessories for the game of Bowls.John Rabone was a very famous maker of measuring instruments. According to Grace’s Guide was founded in 1784 and still in business in Birmingham] However could not find a present record of this company in an internet search—probably taken over .

Lot 824

Measuring Tape Cane. This interesting systems cane holds a steel measuring tape. Possibly a gadget cane designed for a joiner or carpenter. The tape easily pulls out of the silver metal cap and automatically retracts back into the cassette when released. (Max length 80”) To maintain the tape at a specific length merely slide the small button located on the top of the cassette into the hold position. The return spring works well. Made by CHESTERMAN a Sheffield based measure manufacturer. The measuring tape cassette holds the wording CHESTERMAN SHEFFIELD ENGLAND together with JC within the traditional Bow trademark (see below)The measuring gadget is mounted on a Malacca cane and finished with an Edwardian style base ferrule.(Possible replacement). Note of interest—James Chesterman (1792-1867) James Chesterman moved to Sheffield from London in 1820. He set up business with Mr Housfield in 1821 with a factory in Nursery Street. Known as James Chesterman and Co Ltd. From c1832 the business specialised in making measuring tapes and instruments. In 1837 James Chesterman was listed as patentee of the spring tape measure and self rolling window blind. He also produced the first long steel measuring tape and the first woven metallic tape. His business adopted the bow as its trademark and he named his factory The Bow Works which moved to new premises in. 1864.William Chesterman was elected Master Cutler in 1880. In 1963 amalgamation with John Rabone & Sons created Rabone Chesterman, who were subsequently bought by Stanley Tools in 1990 and transferred to Stanley's Woodside Plant.

Lot 843

Spring operated antique English gadget walking stickMalacca cane with a solid silver handle, hallmarked for London 1889, maker mark is for Thomas Johnson.Press the button mounted just below the handle and a little silver removable tube springs out of the top. The tube contains a small propelling pencil. This is 2”/50mm long, 0.16” /4mm diameter, marked “sterling” and is fully functional.. The stick mechanism works very well. Upon pressing the release button a hand should be ready to receive the tube otherwise it will shoot several feet into the air (Good strong spring) Once it pops out and then returned to the handle, it sometimes takes a few goes to get it to re-engage the mechanism. There is some slight dents to the silver handle and the brass ferrule is probably a replacement.

Lot 887

This night gown’s inner layer is made of organza, its stitched together with an outer lace layer. The gown has button fastenings.Fabric composition: lace, cotton, organzaLength : 168 cmWaist : 81 cmCondition: Some imperfections such as discoloration and stains on the back of the garmentProvenance: Mavrocordato familyOriginating from the esteemed Mavrocordato family, historical rulers (ospodar) in regions forming modern-day Romania, this collection of 15 vintage garments intricately weaves together aristocratic elegance and cultural evolution. Among these treasures are select pieces by the influential British couturier John Redfern, who left an indelible mark on women's wardrobe development. Notably, Redfern adorned crowned heads, with admirers including British Queens Victoria and Alexandra, and Russian empresses Maria Feodorovna and Alexandra Feodorovna. At the close of the nineteenth century, Redfern's groundbreaking Taylor suit marked a pivotal shift in women's fashion, characterized by a jacket-like top, matching skirt, blouse with a high-standing collar, and a woman's tie. This ensemble, worn by the future Queen Alexandra during her travels to Europe with the Prince of Wales, encapsulates the intersection of fashion and royalty. The craftsmanship and overall fabric quality of these garments are not only striking but also contribute to their high historical and collectible importance, making this antique clothing selection truly exceptional.
