1913 Straker Squire 15HPReg. no. SD 1726Chassis no. 3168Engine no. 3168Straker & Squire as the company was first known, was established in Fishponds Bristol in 1906 and remained there until 1918 when they relocated to Edmonton, London changing the name to Straker-Squire Ltd. Sidney Straker however had been involved with road vehicles from 1899 when he was producing a steam wagon with Edward Bayley and then with LRL Squire and by 1906 approx. 200 Straker steam vehicles were in use. The firm entered the petrol engine market in 1906 by importing the French built Cornilleau-STE Beuve and marketed them under their own name. Plans were made for Straker to build these cars, but they changed tack and instead produced a 2020cc car designed by Roy Feddon, later Sir Roy. By the time of the 1908 Olympia Motor Show and following some improvements, the car was marketed as the 14/16hp and then for 1910, the stroke was lengthened and renamed the 15hp. For a comprehensive history of the Straker Squire Company we recommend reading an article by the renowned motoring historian, the late Mike Worthington-Williams. The article can be found in The Automobile Magazine dated May 1990 with the second part in the June 1990 issue, of which there are copies in the file. SD 1726 is on the front cover of the May issue and many accompanying photographs inside. This early Straker Squire was delivered new to the Ayrshire region in Scotland. According to research, it is likely that it carried a four-seat open body. In 1929 the car was retired and dismantled, for ease of storage, and the mechanical parts were stored in a stable. Unfortunately, the body was removed and apparently burnt. At this time, according to a continuation logbook the car was registered to a Mrs. Anne Fletcher of Hillhead, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. The chassis and majority of the original mechanical components were acquired by a Cyril Herbert of Andover, he embarked on a restoration and built a narrow 2-seater open body based on the design of an original body supplied by the firm. The car then went to Suffolk in 1985 and was used for a short while by the brother of the owner until another early car joined the stable. In the early 1990s a further comprehensive restoration was started but stalled. In 2017 the restoration gathered pace and was passed to a professional restorer who finished the work in March 2018. The body built in the 1950s appears to have been discarded when other period parts were acquired. An original ash frame of unknown make was repaired with new wood where necessary. Original metal parts used include a bonnet, boot lid and driver’s door. The coachwork was then finished in the original dark blue with the interior trimmed in black leather button-back upholstery. The hood sticks are fitted to the car, but a covering will need to be made and fitted. There is also room in the boot for a dickey seat to be fitted to provide extra seating. The car carries a full complement of CAV electric lighting with the correct control panel mounted on the dashboard, and a range of instruments including a Smiths 0-60mph speedometer. Discreetly fitted to the dashboard is a more modern key fitting to operate a starter motor, fitted for ease of starting. This has been fitted so it can be easily removed should a new owner wish to go back to handle start. There is an extensive history file with the car which includes much correspondence with other Straker Squire owners. Although SD 1726 has not been officially dated by the VCC, the car does hold an Events Passport enabling it to be used in their many events. This would have to be renewed by the new owner, but we do not foresee any problems doing this. There is also evidence in the file that the car was presented for formal dating by the VCC, but due to the ongoing restoration at the time the formalities were never completed. A letter from the Late Malcolm Jeal, then Chairman of the Dating Committee, confirms that the Club accepted a valid date of 1913. This process would need to be concluded with the VCC to obtain the Dating Certificate. There are also many copies of period photographs of both touring and racing cars, some old MOT certificates and the aforementioned continuation logbook detailing previous owners. Period literature includes a 1912 15hp sales catalogue, a 1913 catalogue of component parts, a 1910 15hp sales catalogue, a later 1922 sales catalogue, a 1913 Straker Squire lubrication booklet, a framed and glazed original shares certificate and a framed and glazed original advert for the make. Also included in the sale are many useful and unobtainable spares. These include the major part of a 15HP engine, gearbox, complete rear axle, a correct radiator, a couple of wheels as well as two doors from the original destroyed coachwork. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to acquire a quality, desirable 4-cylinder English Edwardian motor car which, as well as being useable, would be a welcome addition to VCC events.Estimate: £38,000 - 42,000To be auctioned along with a fantastic selection of other vehicles on March 5th at our Showell Farm site, SN15 2NU.
