A SOUTH AFRICA 1877-79 CAMPAIGN MEDAL TO 1309 PTE H. HERBERT, 2-24TH FOOT South Africa Medal, clasp 1877-8-9, correctly engraved 1309 Pte H Herbert 2-24th Foot, condition GVF+; with cap badge, button and belt buckle of the 24th Foot; sold with a Knobkerrie, which the recipient likely brought home as a souvenirHenry Herbert was born in Kingston, London, in 1838. He attested on the 11th of September 1860, aged 22, giving his occupation as Labourer. He served with the 2-24th Foot in Mauritius for five years and five months, East Indies for seven years and seven months, in Gibraltar for seven months, a period of four months at home and one year eleven months in South Africa.Discharged at Secunderabad, India, on the 24th of January 1881 after 21 years and 117 days of service. He excelled as a soldier, had never been tried by district court martial and was in possession of the LSGC medal.

GEORGIAN SILK AND SILVER BROCADED GENTLEMAN'S WAISTCOAT MID 18TH CENTURY the white silk brocaded in silver and gilt threads with an elaborate design of scrolling flowers and pomegranates, with twelve buttons and concealed button holes, the serpentine side pockets each with three decorative buttons, lined with cream linen and silkDimensions:approx. 90cm longProvenance:Provenance: By repute from the family of The Erskine's of Alva, which included James Erskine, Lord Barjarg and Alva (Scottish 1722–1796). This waistcoat was on long-term loan to The Museums of Scotland before being reclaimed by the current vendor's mother, a descendant of the Fulton and Elibank families. Lord Alva was painted by Allan Ramsay (Scottish 1713 - 1784) wearing a very similar styled waistcoat, circa 1750. The painting is now in the collection of The National Galleries of Scotland, bequeathed by the 13th Baron Elibank in 1973, Accession Number PG 2216.
A British .76 calibre composite percussion musket, barrel 39 in., percussion breech threaded on, Birmingham control marks to both parts and an older London view mark in front of the seam, lock marked 'TOWER' and with a crown (both possibly spurious), stocked to within 4 in. of the muzzle with brass furniture including two ram rod pipes, stock secured with pins, iron sling swivels, button head ram rod. The general configuration conforms to the India pattern musket - presumably a trade conversion to percussion, possibly for export.

There are light scratches throughout the work. Along the interior there is light wear and the band that would have once held the cigarettes in place is missing. The stones are in good condition with no chips or cracks.
