A rare pair of German soldiers summer light weight white breeches. As Issued to Luftschiffer other ranks/troopers as part of their fatigue uniform. These white breeches are marked ‘Luftschiff BTN 4 1912’ and are made of good quality silk cotton in the style of riding breeches which are fitted with quilted padding to the inner legs to avoid rubbing when being used for riding. Fitted with a 5 button fly, all buttons present and correct. A rare piece of clothing. VGC for age showing only minor wear. See Plate 2

A German officer’s dress sword c 1890, straight fullered blade 28”, finely etched with crowned “L”, state shield and trophies within elaborate scrolled foliate panels, gilt for 2” at forte, brass hilt with turn down shell guard bearing WM German eagle, knucklebow with quillon and pronounced curl into pineapple pommel with button finial, simulated silver wirebound grip. A US officer’s dress sword, flattened oval section blade 30½”, etched with eagle and trophies within scrolled panels, ornamental embossed copper hilt, the outer shell guard embossed with eagle and flags, the inner turn down shell plain (slightly bent), knucklebow and crossguard with button finial, urn shaped pommel with eagle on one side, wirebound swollen fishskin grip, in its brass mounted blued steel scabbard with 2 rings. GC, the blade retaining much original finish, traces of gilt to hilt. Plate 11
A good Belgian 6 shot 11mm PF open frame DA revolver, 10½” overall, round barrel 6¼” stamped at the breech “E Lefaucheux Invr Brevete”, the frame numbered 6154 and 188152; Liege proved; gilt overall and chiselled with panels of vines and flowers, and engraved near the muzzle “Schmacht a Colmax” (?) in gothic script; the bag shaped butt with ivory grips, and lanyard ring. GWO & C (some wear to gilt and light pitting to butt strap); subsequently adapted to take a large Bowie type bayonet, with broad 8” blade, crosspiece chiselled and gilt en suite with the revolver, and with plain ivory grips with release button, in its GS mounted leather covered sheath. A mid 17th century English rapier, the hollow ground wedge section blade 37½”, the hilt with shallow dish guard, pas d’ane rings with out turned ends and flattened button finials, 2 large ring guards, knucklebow with curled side loops, and spherical pommel; the wooden grip lacking its binding but retaining Turks heads. A SILVER FILIGREE CASKET, PROBABLY INDO-PORTUGUESE, GOA, 17TH/18TH CENTURY rectangular, entirely composed of panels and borders of fine scroll filigree, the lid with rotating button clasp and twin hinges with openwork scroll leaves, interior with simple dividing bar, feet and handle to lid lacking 15.5cm wide, 745gr (24oz) There is a similar but larger casket in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art, Inv. No.283 (illustrated in J.M. Rogers, The Arts of Islam, Treasures from the Nasser D. Khalili Collection, Sydney, 2007, p.242) and another comparable casket in the Museo Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon (Inv. No.67, Gift of J. Kugel, 1953). Also see Sotheby`s, London, 24 April 2013, lot 221 and Mallam`s, Oxford, 9 November 2011, lot 255 for further similar caskets. Given the strong trade links of Europe`s East India companies between Canton, Macau, Batavia and Goa, there is some uncertainty about the centre of manufacture of these caskets, but such fine filigree is generally attributed to Gujarati craftsmen in Goa, who had a long-standing tradition in such work. Some of these caskets still retain rectangular containers, perhaps for tea.
