The rare Military General Service Medal awarded to Sergeant J. Button, 9th Regiment of Foot, who twice volunteered for the ‘Forlorn Hope’, firstly at Badajos, for which services he was promoted Sergeant, and at St. Sebastian, where he lost his left leg Military General Service 1793-1814, 8 clasps, Roleia, Vimiera, Corunna, Busaco, Fuentes D’Onor, Salamanca, Vittoria, St. Sebastian (J. Button, Serjeant, 9th Foot.) two edge bruises and some light marks, otherwise very fine and a rare ‘forlorn hope’ man £3,000-£4,000 --- Only two medals issued with this combination of clasps, both to the 9th Foot. Joseph Button was born at Blandford, Dorset, in about 1789. He enlisted into the 9th Foot on 16 December 1804, and was discharged on the Isle of Wight on 26 July 1814, in consequence of ‘amputated left thigh from wound at St Sebastian’. He served as a private for 6 years 5 days, as corporal 243 days, and as a sergeant for 3 years 184 days. His commanding officer noted ‘Sergeant Joseph Button is a most excellent non-commissioned officer, a very gallant soldier, and deserving of the highest rate Pension’. That he twice volunteered for the ‘forlorn hope’ is confirmed by the following extract from Letters of Private Wheeler 1809-1828, edited by B. H. Liddell Hart (published 1951): ‘Mr. Gratten has written so much more about Ensign Dyas 51st and Lieut. Mackie 38th being passed over without promotion. What is to be thought of the following statement of Sergeant Button 9th Foot. He is one of the remnant of the old Peninsula Army and was present in the following actions, sieges, storms, besides affairs and skirmishes. Rolica 17 August 1808 - Private Vimeira 21 August 1808 - Private La Coruna 1809 - Private Busaco 27 September 1810 - Corporal Fuentes D'Onoro 15 May 1811 - Sergeant Cuidad Rodrigo January 1812 - Sergeant Badajos 17 March and 6 April 1812 Private, volunteered 'forlorn hope' and Promoted Sergeant Salamanca 22 July 1812 - Sergeant Vittoria 21 June 1813 - Sergeant San Sebastian August and September 1813 volunteered 'forlorn hope' lost left leg and wounded right leg by grape He was 10 years 8/12 in the 9th. Foot. His brilliant service was rewarded by a pension of what? 3/6 per day – no, only 1/3 per day. This fine old veteran is now employed as a Toll collector in the Bath Turnpike Trust and might be seen on any day at some of the turnpike gates about Bath. (Bath 14 July 1847)’ Joseph Button, ‘late Sergeant 9th Foot Regiment’, died at Box, Wiltshire, on 17 April 1870, aged 81 years. Sold with copied research.
Quilts x5. All items from The Meador Williams Heath Quilt Collection. Quilt - Green and white 1940s diamonds. Stained and frayed. Measures approx 86 x 64 inches. PLUS Quilt - Thin quilt has little or no wadding, there are several materials underneath the top layer which is torn and worn. Measures approx 82 x 63 inches. PLUS Quilt - This is similar to a Strippy quilt and has large squares with half squares around the border. Measures approx 77 x 60 inches. Hand knotted, some repairs. PLUS Quilt - The fans were pieced by Valera Heath, Louis Gardner provided the calico, boarded wadding and backing. Synthetic / mix cotton. 1989. Measures approx 96 x 82 inches. Very good condition. PLUS Quilt - A small quilt possibly for a baby's cot, a simple square patch design with a border bound from behind, the middle of each square is tied with green yarn, The wadding is made from a jacket or coat length pieced to some other material, the seam can be felt and there is evidence of button hole stitching. Measures approx 37 x 33 inches. PLUS 3 x Vintage 'Quilted' Cushions, turn of the century. 2 x square, 1 x heart shaped. Very worn. Measures approx 11 x 11 inches. A 19TH CENTURY SWISS BRASS REPEATER CARRIAGE CLOCK. the circular enamel dial and movement signed Vacheron & Constantin, Geneve, serial no. 14055, with subsidiary alarm, the eight day twin barrel movement striking to two gongs, push repeater button, with carry case and winders, 18cm high inc. handle. *CR Runs with ease and strikes but functionality not guaranteed at time of sale, light surface wear to case, glass panels good.
UNUSUAL STEIFF PULL ALONG COW. A large early 20thc Steiff soft toy Cow, with leather horns and hoofs and mounted on a metal frame with wooden wheels, with a pull cord to make a noise and with a button to one ear. Approx 60cms long, 43.5cms high. *CR Some wear/losses to the feet in places, horns are a little discoloured and worn, a little fur loss around the pull chord, and a little fur loss in places.

A RARE 18TH CENTURY SILVER SHOT FLASK. with a shaped body, decorated with a textured plumage and a radiating flower around the steel release button for the hinged cover*, the base with a pull-off cover, unmarked; 3" (7.5cm) long; 1.2ozt *An interesting piece, the amount of shot this flask can hold likely means it was made for recreational use rather than for hunting. The hinged cover would be the measure per-shot (likely for a small gun or pistol) and is designed to be opened, measured & poured with one hand.
