A WW1 era German bulkhead ships barometer, by repute taken from RMS Berengaria, formally known as SS Imperator. Brass body with hinged glass fronted lid, and central button for adjusting the needle alignment. White dial with German text, but no apparent makers mark or dates. Notes: information supplied by the vendor suggests that the item once sat on the bridge of the SS Imperator, later the RMS Berengaria. The piece was acquired by a relative of the current owner and has thus been passed down through the family. SS Imperator was a German ocean liner, first launched in 1912 as part of the Hamburg America Line. At the time of her completion in 1913, she was the worlds largest passenger liner. During WW1 she remained in port at Hamburg, and was seized in 1919 by the United States Navy. For a short time Imperator was part of the U.S. Navy, and served as a troop transport ship, transporting U.S. servicemen back to the United States from the European theatre of war. As part of War Reparations, Imperator was handed over to the British Cunard Line company, by way of some compensation for the loss of RMS Lusitania at the hands of the German Navy. She was renamed RMS Berengaria, and sailed as the flagship for Cunard from 1919-1939, and was later scrapped between 1939 and 1946. Dimensions: width 17.2cm x height 17.2cm x depth 7.8cm. Condition: some damaged to the glass front, but the brass case is in good order. There a 6 cracks to the glass, all emanating from the adjustment knob to the centre. The brass casing is free from dents or other kind of damage, plus the dial is also in good order. The wooden plaque backing is not original to the piece, having been added later by a former owner (this can be easily removed by undoing the screws).
A WW1 British officers marching compass, by Negretti & Zambra. Brass body with black painted finish, viewing window to the lid and suspension ring. Mother of pearl dial with luminescent arrow, and brass stop button to the side. Broad arrow and maker marked to the bottom. Complete with its original leather case and strap, named to ‘M Blakeway Royal Tank Corps’. Officially embossed maker mark and date of ‘T.F.&S 1916’. Notes: consigned by the original owners granddaughter. Malcolm Blakeway entered the war on August 10th 1915, and originally served as a 2nd Lt in the 1st battalion Yorks & Lancs Regiment. He later attained his Captaincy while serving in the Tank Corps. He is entitled to the 1915 star, BWM, and Victory medal. He was a native of Handsworth, Birmingham, and later of Chaddesley Kidderminster. It’s believed that he also held a commission during WW2, again as a Captain in the Royal Armoured Corps. He relinquished this commission on August 16th 1945, and was granted the honorary rank of Major. Condition: generally very good. Normal service wear to both the compass and its case. There appears to be a zig-zag pattern lightly scratched into the lid of the compass, likely from the WW1 era (perhaps a moment of boredom?). The compass appears to work as it should, with the stop button also functional. The leather case has a good colour and patina. It may have had a different original owner during WW1, as there is another name inked out on the case.
A 1914 Star trio, awarded to 3053 Trooper Joseph Brooks of the 1st Life Guards. To include: a 1914 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, a Life Guards cpa badge with slider, and a Life Guards button. Notes: Tpr Brooks disembarked for service on October 6th 1914. His records confirm the trio a his full entitlement, and there is no evidence of the award of the clasp. Some online records state his service number as being 8053, which would seem to be an error in transcription due to the nature of the original handwritten record. Condition: good. Normal service wear to all of the items, but nothing that is detrimental.
2 WW1 home front badges. To include: a 1915 ‘On War Service’ oval badge, with button hole fitting to the reverse. By D.C. Collins of Newgate Street, London. Unusually, the badge is made in white metal (possibly silver plated),as most are made in brass. Plus, a rare gilt metal and enamel 1915 War Service badge for Belsize Motors. Complete with button hole fitting to reverse (no maker mark). 2 items. Condition: Both badges are in very good condition, with only light service wear. The enamel is intact and most of the gilt finish remains.
A WW1 era, M1917 United States bayonet by Remington, 1917 dated to the ricasso, plus U.S. proof marks. Standard pattern, with wooden slab grips with the distinctive grooves cut into both sides. Morticed pommel with push button release catch, plus steel cross guard with muzzle ring. Single edged, fullered blade, with rounded spine. Complete with leather steel mounted scabbard, and a later webbing frog. Notes: likely reissued to the British Home Guard during WW2, which would have been the source of the webbing frog. Approximately 57.2cm length in the scabbard, blade length 43cm. Condition: generally good. A little pitting to the pommel area, working release catch. Clean blade, with a few nicks / indentations to the cutting edge. A little separation between the throat of the scabbard and the leather part of the scabbard, but the structure is still secure. The webbing has age related wear and soiling.
