Each garnet has a gold foil backing with an intricate 'waffle' pattern. On the reverse is a loop for attachment. Gold and garnet buttons such as this were affixed to high-status sword scabbards and similar examples were found within the Staffordshire Hoard. During the early Anglo-Saxon period, the production of such pieces was tightly controlled and the uniformity of style suggests they were the product of only a few specialist workshops.Recorded with PAS: NARC-2CE634; Treasure number: 2009T648.15mm diameter x 10mm, 2.22g.
