A Brass Striking and Repeating Alarm Carriage Clock, signed Soldano, retailed by Reid & Sons, Newcastle On Tyne, circa 1880, carrying handle and repeat button, bevelled glasses, enamel dial with Roman numerals, alarm dial, twin barrel movement with silvered platform lever escapement, striking on a blued steel gong, backplate stamped JS Paris to the bottom left hand side for (Joseph Soldano) and numbered 4968, 18cm high over handle 10.02.15, Right hand side and front glass panels with two minor chips to the corners, glasses with some minor scratches, dial with a minor scratch above the 1 o'clock position, retailers signature and the alarm dial track are very slightly rubbed, movement in going order, repeat and strike are working.

A Dress Stud and Cufflink Set, cased, a pair of cufflinks, three buttons and two collar studs of black octagonal onyx in a white milled frame with eight-cut diamonds at the corners, in a fitted case from Boodle & Dunthorne The items are in good condition. The cufflinks are stamped 'EAP' and '18CT' and 'PLAT', and the buttons and studs also stamped '18CT' and 'PLAT' and in our opinion they would test as platinum fronted gold. The firm of Francois-Arsene Margaine are recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development as 'very famous' makers of carriage clocks working from Rue Beranger 22 and Rue Bondy 54, Paris from before 1869 until around 1914. They were awarded a Silver medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1889 and a Gold medal in 1900.

Henry Capt is recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development as a retailer of best quality French carriage clocks who had premises in both Paris (Rue d'Alger in 1850, Rue Scribe in 1870 and Rue de la Paix in 1880) and London (151 Regent Street). By 1893 the firm was in financial difficulty which lead to the Paris and Geneva operations being taken-on by Louis Gallopin et Cie and the London Premises passing to Martin & Co. The fact that the current clock is both signed for Capt and his successors suggests that it was supplied at around the time the business was being transferred to Louis Gallopin et Cie.
