A CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY SLANT FRONT DESK, 18TH CENTURY, with a flat rectangular top above a slant front hinged door with a later brass bat wing escutcheon above a concave half shell carving, opening to a fitted interior centering an arched short drawer with shell detail and brass button pull flanked by open letter pockets with double arched valances and shaped dividers, over a larger central drawer within paired short drawers and each enclosing brass button pulls, above exterior side lopers with matching pulls and three graduated drawers mounted with identical brass escutcheons centered by brass bale handles on batwing backplates, raised on a molded plinth and shaped bracket feet. Height: 42" Width: 40" Depth: 20" Condition: Good condition for antique furniture of this age, use and materials including but not limited to normal age cracks, old repairs, restorations, expected marks, scratches, dings, chips, losses, small double ring marks on top, interior writing surface has old ink spill marks, old varnished underside, and back of case as well as interior/exterior of drawers. Brass hardware is of a later date but stylistically appropriate. Drawer runners could use some smoothing.
