Cosmetically very good for its age and use, with much of the blackened brass finish remaining. Intact glass, and a good quality intact mother of pearl dial. Some very minor paint loss to the black painted central part of the dial. Very good colour and patina to the leather from use and handling. Working retention strap and buckle.

Accompanying the tunic is a black beaver skin bi-corn hat, with black velvet and silver cord detail, a silvered King’s crown button, and a detachable white and red feather plume. Also included are Col Tod’s High Sheriff’s beaver skin hat (dating from c.1939) with cut steel button and chain detail, plus, dark blue crushed velvet pantaloons with cut steel buttons, lace cravats, lace cuffs, 2 pairs of white leather gloves, cut steel High Sheriff’s shoe buckles, spurs, collar stiffeners, black fabric sword belt for a court sword, black stocks, and a painted storage trunk and painted hat tin. Notes: Captain Alan Cecil Tod served as part of the 4th West Lancashire Brigade, with his rank being noted as Captain Adjutant, and later Major. His medal entitlement was the 1915 Star, British War Medal, the Victory Medal with oak leaf, and the O.B.E which was issued in 1919. Major Tod later became a Colonel, and an entry appears in the London Gazette on January 30th 1939 stating that he was to become Deputy Lord Lieutenant. A further entry in the London Gazette from March 1939 states that he was to become Sheriff for the County Palatine of Lancaster. Colonel Tod also served in the Home Guard during WW2, and for his service he was granted the C.B.E in 1943. Condition: generally very good. The Deputy Lord Lieutenant’s tunic is in good order and appears to have had little use (the silvered buttons were still wrapped in tissue when we received the item). The buttons and silvered lace detail to the cuffs and skirt have tarnished with age, but are nevertheless intact. There is a very small area near the right epaulette where there is wear to the nap of the cloth (possible old moth tracking to the surface), but this is not a hole. Both beaver skin hats are in good condition, with both showing little use. The pantaloons and trousers also remain in very good clean condition. The lace accoutrements, buckles, spurs and other items show a little age from storage, but for the most part are in good condition. The storage trunk and hat tin show some corrosion to the lid, and the hat tin is dented to one side. Please note that not all items within the lot are shown in the images.
A WW2 era German Kriegsmarine officer’s dress dagger, complete with knot and hanging straps, and it’s blue webbing under belt.A fine example of its type, but seemingly a non maker marked piece.Of standard design, with a creamy white celluloid grip with twisted wire binding, eagle and swastika pommel, and the usual cross guard with push button release catch.Steel double edged blade, with narrow double fuller to both sides. The gilt brass scabbard has two suspension rings, both attached to oak leaf mounts, and the usual lighting bolt motifs towards the chape area. The hanging straps are of black velvet, with gilt aluminium lions head fittings. All of the lobster style clips are present, but the small addition chain that would be attached to one of the clips is absent.Provenance: acquired by Lieutenant, later Captain D.B.Lynes of the 2nd S.A.S. Lt Lynes was believed to have collected the piece at the conclusion of WW2 from a German U-Boat ‘Sub Pen’ base in Bergen, along with several other Kriegsmarine related pieces (offered as separate lots in the sale).Approximately 41.8cm total length, blade length 25.2cm.Condition: generally very good. The celluloid handle is intact and without cracking, just a tiny surface scuff to one side. Some age related dulling and wear to the gilt finish on the pommel and cross guard. The blade is clean, with just some minor mottling to the tip area. The scabbard has its bright gilt finish, and there are some minor depressions to the metal (often seen on this type of dagger). The gilt fittings to the straps have worn in places, revealing the silvery coloured aluminium beneath, but are nevertheless intact. The knot attached at the handle shows some minor wear from service.
