Wallis (Barnes, 1887-1979). A silver metal button worn by Barnes Wallis as a boy at Christ’s Hospital, between 1900-1904, with paper tag and accompanying typed letter, both signed by Wallis. The letter dated 15th July 1970 reads ‘Dear Mr Harris, Further to my letter of the 13th July, I enclose herwith a button as worn by me, as a boy at Christ’s Hospital. I hope you will find this of interest, and that it will help raise funds at your auction. Yours sincerely, Barnes Wallis. Encl: Christs’ Hospital was founded in 1553 by Kind Edward VII whose effigy is stamped on the button’. (2)
* Flying Helmet. WWI period full-cover helmet, c. 1916, of soft black kid-leather with cotton cloth lining, six-piece segmented close-fitting with neck cape, and featuring overstitched reinforced padding to forehead, adjustable straps for neck fitting to sides, and with button-down ear-flaps, possibly continental origins, excellent original condition (1)
* Flying Helmet. A good pre-WWII lady-aviators’ helmet by “Kett” of London, c. 1930s, fine quality in white soft kid-leather with mohair lining and applied makers label within, button-down flexible peak and ear-flaps, with buckle chinstrap fastening, excellent little-used original condition (1)
* Royal Flying Corps - Lt H.F Moore RFC/HSC. The aviator’s RFC-issue flying helmet and goggles, c. 1917, the helmet of soft tan leather with woollen cloth lining and having button-down peak and ear-flaps, inscribed in black ink to neck “H.F. Moore”, together with similar period standard issue flying goggles with nickel-plated frames, gauze cheek-protection and adjustable elasticated strap. Lt Harold Foster Moore commissioned into the RFC in May 1915, one of the fledgling pilots of the early days of WWI, wounded in action September 1915 and invalided home. Variously struck-off pilot registration due to injuries in 1916, but re-enlisted in 1917 and promoted to squadron commander by end of hostilities in 1919. (2)
* Motorists Goggles. A cased pair of Edwardian motoring goggles by C. Briard, Douai, Belgium, c. 1908, having tinted curved glazed lenses in nickel-plated frames with chenille-lined gauze cheek protection, contained in original protective leatherette covered hard case with button-down cover (1)
* Waffen SS WWII Uniform. A rare original NCO’s service-dress uniform tunic of the Adolf Hitler Unit 1939-45, of “feld-grau” serge fabric having applied makers label inscribed Soderbergs, Uppsala, long tunic pattern with external lower outer-pockets, with medal-award ribbon through upper button-hole, and with applied regimental embroidered flashes, rank-chevron and tabs, “SS” and rank tabs to collar, nickel-plated pin-fixing badge to left-breast pocket, pierced format of bayonet-fixed rifle in oak-leaf border design, original painted metal buttons, applied embroidered identity ribbon to left sleeve inscribed “Adolf Hitler” in gothic script, shows age-wear and usage (1)
