(26cm.) high (fading and some wear) - Christie’s South Kensington, lot 573 16th February 1995 - Steevan’s toys are very rare to find with a label to positively identify them, this bear belonged to William Pery Goodbody (1905-1932), so was purchased in adulthood as a mascot, being educated at Shrewsbury and Cambridge, where he was keen rower, hence all the badges - see Some of our Favourite Bears by Ian Pout, page 29

A 1930s Merrythought Teddy Bear, with golden mohair, orange and black glass eyes, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed limbs with brown felt pads, inoperative squeaker, woven label on foot and celluloid covered button in ear —16 ½in. (42cm.) high (thinning and wear to back, some general wear) - Designed by Florence Atwood in 1930, this is an example of one of their first bears, which made its debut in their 1931 catalogue. Merrythought used this actual bear as a prototype for an edition of The Merrythought Bear, made for TBW in 2022.

(33cm.) height including ears (general wear and thinning); with five original photographs of Anne Darlington playing with Christopher Robin comprising Christopher Robin dressed as Sir Brian Botany in armour and Anne riding a donkey, CR and Anne sat on a motorcycle, CR, Anne and another friend in the sea, probably Seaford, CR and Anne playing with a Steiff Pantom monkey and CR and Anne playing with a pedal car - purchased from Christie’s South Kensington, 11th December 1995, lot 17 - Kanga and Roo were the childhood toy and companion of Anne Darlington. Anne Darlington (1919 - 1958), daughter of W.A. Darlington once drama critic for The Daily Telegraph and author of 'Alf's Button’; was a great friend and inseparable companion to Christopher Robin Milne. The photographs sold with Kanga and Roo detail their friendship. A.A. Milne, who always wanted a daughter, came to love Anne as his own. He described some of Anne's adventures with Christopher in 'Now We Are Six' and dedicated the book of poems to her with the inscription '...because she is so speshal....When Anne and I go out a walk, We hold each other's hand and talk, Of all the things we mean to doWhen Anne and I are forty-two - see Some of our Favourite Bears by Ian Pout, page 22

Bristol’, a German Teddy Bear, circa 1910, lost at Bristol Airpot in 2012, with blonde mohair, black boot button eye, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose and claws, swivel head, jointed limbs, slight hump and inoperative growler —20in. (50.5cm.) high; an original photograph of this bear with the original owner and his sister; a Bristol Airport bag; a Lost Property tag and a newspaper featuring the bear — this much-loved circa 1910 German bear, which was inadvertently left behind at Bristol Airport in 2012 before being reunited with his owner more than a year later. He was bought by Ian from SAS in 2015 - originally he was called Edward Bear was given to Kenneth George Baker by his uncle soon after he was born in 1910. Kenneth was never strong and died at home shortly before his third birthday. He left behind a sister Dora (sitting in the photograph) and younger brother Glyn. Dora became the bear’s new guardian. Dora died childless, aged 80, her bear passed onto her nephew Bob (Glyn’s son). In 2012 Bob moved from South Wales to Cyprus. He flew from Bristol Airport, but when his flight was called, he inadvertently left his family bear in the departure lounge. Bob was already on the plane when he realised and having heard several Tannoy messaged about left luggage being destroyed, he presumed the worse and the bear was lost forever. After a media campaign ‘Bristol’ and Bob were reunited fourteen months later, sadly due to ill health Bob decided he should sell Bristol and find a new home for him.

A rare German Billy Possum opossum, 1909 with black tipped blonde mohair, replace brown boot button eyes, pronounced muzzle, pink stitched nose and mouth, light brown felt ears, swivel head, jointed limbs with pointed heel and felt pads, tail and inoperative squeaker —13in. (33cm.) high (bald to face and back, hole to chest, two pads recovered and one with holes) - the Teddy Bear was the mascot of President Roosevelt. The new President William Taft adopted this character as his mascot.

Theodora’, a Steiff miniature Teddy Bear, 1910-20, with golden mohair, black bead eyes, remains of black stitched nose and mouth, swivel head, jointed limbs with large feet, FF underscored button in ear and knitted outfit —3 ½in. (9cm.) high (wear and balding, right ear loose at bottom) - owned by a Mrs Gillett, an occasional visitor to Witney, she loved bears and used to search her handbag to look for and then show us her own, of which she was very proud. After her death, her trustees offered this little bear to Witney to find a good home. Janice, Ian’s colleague suggested she would make a good companion for Theodore, she was named Theodora and they have remained together since 2000.

‘Bo’ - Paul Volpp’s favourite bear, a cinnamon centre-seam Steiff Teddy Bear, circa 1905, with black boot button eyes, pronounced clipped muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, central seam down the front of face, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, hump and inoperative squeaker —24in. (61cm.) high (thinning to backs of legs, gone into three tiny holes, slight general wear and thinning, small stain to one hand pad and small holes to tips of feet pads); and cotton collar - this bear was Paul Volpp's first-ever vintage bear and the start of his collection. Very much his pride and joy.

Didcock, a 1930s Alpha Farnell Teddy Bear, with golden mohair, replaced button eyes, pronounced muzzle, black stitched nose, mouth and claws coming slightly onto pads, swivel head, jointed limbs with felt pads and blue and white woven label on foot —15in. (38cm.) high (slight wear and fading) - Didcock was sold to Witney by a Mr Didcock, a chimney sweep from nearby Enstone. He was given the bear as a child in 1938 - this bear features on page 64 of The Ultimate Teddy Bear Book and Some of our Favourite Bears by Ian Pout, page 31

Very Unusual WW2 Possible Airborne Related British Maternity Style Tunic Produced for Extreme Cold Weather, produced in a fine khaki cloth with a large collar having press down snaps. The front with a half zip and button fastener. Two large hip pockets and two breast zip slash pockets. Fixed waistbelt. Interior with a very heavy padded lining. Collar with Gieves label with inked name, but this is not clear. Sadly the tunic has some heavy moth damage. Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Arthur Montague "Boy" Browning, GCVO, KBE, CB, DSO designed a special pattern of Maternity tunic to wear, which is housed in the Airborne Air Assault Museum, it is possible that this tunic was designed to be worn by the Airborne forces or Glider troops in Norway.
