Major Joseph Clifford Griffiths Royal Flying Corps. Important and very comprehensive collection relating to his service in the RFC. Commissioned in December 1915, Cliff as he was known, gained his Pilots licence in 1916 having graduated with a double first from Liverpool University. He appears to have served with 23 Squadron in France and from the research he flew both combat and photographic reconnaissance missions. On the 24th September 1916 his aircraft (4857 FE2b )was damaged in the air and his observer Lieut R.S.Osmaston, killed. Later on the 4th December 1916 he was brought down near Beaumont Hamel by AA fire and landed just 200 yards behind the British front line, both he and his observer, Lt. R.Affleck, were unharmed. According to a copied newspaper report" he has been engaged in numerous air fights and succeeded in bringing down several hostile machines" Later in his career he was reprimanded for flying under bridges on the river Tyne. After the war he became Armstrong Whitworth's first Chief Flying Instructor and acted as a text pilot. In October 1923 he was test flying a Siskin when it spun into the ground and Cliff was killed, he was only 27 years old. The collection includes three (3) photograph Albums with a number of excellent photographs of wartime pilots, various aircraft, some in the air,and the inevitable crashes, together with individual photographs of Cliff , one in uniform. Also rare message streamer, weighed with lead? coloured blue, white and red, apparently used by Cliff to drop messages from his aircraft, together with large flag c.70 cms x c.45cms of 191(N) TS a WWI Home Defence unit based at Newmarket, his Victory medal and war medal, two boxed life saving medals, his RAF hat badge and RAF button,original publications Offensive versus Defence in the air (1917), Notes from the front(1914) and a rare copy of RAF Instruction Notes on the Vickers Gun, May 1918, a couple of contemporary books, Practical Flying and Work of the RAF (both somewhat distressed).
