A BRITISH INFANTRY SHAKO 1800-1806. This example appears to conform to the pattern described in a General Order for 1800. However it is known that four Line Infantry regiments were ordered to adopt same in 1798 and the 5th/60th had worn a similar hat in 1797. This example is eight inches in height and seven inches across the crown. It is very solid in structure, the outer layer of the body being made from two panels of lacquered material; the bottom bracing band is of very stout leather, the crown with a final covering as per the body. The front peak is a replacement being bound. To the rear is a 'let-down' flexible leather peak (noted in some issues), this is sewn in between the body and the stout leather bracing band. This peak is fitted on the corners with two very small metal rings, purpose unknown. The frontal plate (officially called the 'Trophy Plate') is in thin gauge die-stamped brass and appears to be of good quality. This is topped with a circular well constructed multi-layered black fabric cockade, this with a small brass period button for the Cinque Ports Volunteers (1794-1808). Stout leather sweat band and ribbed crimson fabric lining. At some time there may have been an attached festoon or ribbon to the upper body as the remains of sewing points are evident, good condition.
FRENCH 1ST EMPIRE, 37TH REGIMENT OF LINE, AN HISTORIC SHAKO. A most rare and important original example, worn by 'M. Berthon', who, according to a period label, saw service in 'Allemagne 1809, Hollande 1810, Espagne 1811, 1812, 1813, Waterloo 1815'. Further labels show that the shako was in the Jeanne Sully Collection, Fontainebleau. It was Catalogue number 780 at a famous Exhibition held in Paris? in 1900. Further details contained in this label show that Berthon was a Conscript in the class of 1808. The shako of stiffened black felt is 7.5 inches in height, 9.25 inches across the crown, this is of leather with a slightly sunken top, a near 1 inch turn-over and a half inch bottom bracing band. The front peak in unstiffened leather is unbound and 2 inches maximum in width. The shako plate in thin gauge die-stamped brass features the imperial Eagle and pierced '37'. A tooled leather circular tri-colour above with small plain button. The graded brass chin scales of scallop format are tied up behind the cockade (fastener lacking); the side ornaments in brass are circular with a five-point central star, two supports for the cord festoons are located on the crown turn-down, and feature hooked five pointed stars. The sweat band of black cotton material, now faded and worn. The caplines/festoons with 'flounder' finials are in white plaited cord and are probably period replacements, good condition for age. The interior also is pasted with a printed label pertaining to Cotton's Waterloo Museum of Relics and their auction on Tuesday October 5th 1909.

Two colour woollen plume boss with correct 'death's head' brass button. Full length yellow cord cap and body lines. White horse hair falling plume with correct pattern brass holder. The inside of the crown with various stamps, 'WarrowD/5/1891', a very good 'untouched' period example.
12TH (PRINCE OF WALES' ROYAL) LANCERS OTHER RANKS FULL DRESS CAP 1856 PATTERN, A good quality example, the black leather body with ribbed red woollen side panels and black patent leather trencher top, yellow and blue linen waistband. The inside of the crown with official stamp, 'Property Of The Aldershot Tattoo', the body and peak with some scarring to the surface, small moth nips to the red side panels, the plume boss with stitching faults, otherwise good sound condition, worthy of restoration.
