English School, late 18th century- Portrait of a Sergeant in King George III Coldstream Regiment of the Footguards standing full-length turned to the right in a landscape, 50.8x40.5cm Note: This military figure can be narrowed down to a Sergeant in King George III`s Coldstream regiment of the footguards, most likely a Sergeant of the Battalion Company 1792. He wears a red regimental coat with dark blue facings, symbolizing the Royal regiment, it may be a full dress version with a stand up collar with blue and gold lace edge. The gilt button loops in pairs on the lapel signify he is a member of the Coldstream and the gilt epaulettes are a sign that he is in a Battalion Company. Under the coat a black stock and white frill shows. A sword belt hangs on the left with an oval belt plate and there is a crimson sash round his waist with fringing on the left side. His hat is plain black with stiffeners in the front and back, the Infantry regiments still had white lacing around the edge of their hats but from 1790 the guards had black silk edging, as evident in the painting. They had a white plumb with black tip and black silk cockade at base. His hair is powdered, which was practise up until 1795, and tied in a black silk ribbon. (VW)
